so back the same midfield lacking depth next year at some point you have to take a risk.
Agree

Some posters on here applaud other clubs aggressive list mgt when they make a Gibbs like play aggressive list mgt however the moment we go after a class contracted player they expect us to pay unders

Bottom line is we need another A grader to compete with the better midfields and Gibbs is our man and his true value will be measured by how close he gets us to a GF or premiership

It is perfect time to take a risk

I say let them keep him, I think we walk away now after SOS's comments. Let them keep a player against his will and see what it does to their culture.
Completely agree.

Selling the farm hurts us long term. I will be livid if we give up two first rounders for a 28 year old.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Silvagni's statement allows him to say that whatever deal he eventually accepted was the best deal on the table, and 'fair' value for a contracted player who they 'expected' to see out the contract.

It's clever PR speak that sets him up for a win at the trade regardless of the outcome
He will probably say he would have accepted a 2nd rounder but decided to negotiate harder for a better deal.

I agree

The concern for me, is where do we draw the line?

So if Carlton asked for two first rounders and our 2nd in 2017 we say yes still?

With all that said, lets first see what pans out and how the chips fall first. On the surface it doesnt feel right, but lets see what else the deal entails.

This trade week seems to have gotten away from us.
First we thought Hendo would get us a compo pick, but it didnt happen and will most likely go for nothing as a delisted FA.
Secondly we thought we could push out Lyons for a second but with one a bit days to go we havent and he could go for nothing in the PSD.
Thirdly Carlton have decided to act like pricks and make us pay way overs.
Fourth, we dont appear to have any other irons in the fire to get another mid in trade period.
Concerning.
Also scarey to see on the news that they were saying that Noble leaving has hurt our ability to trade because he was the only experienced person doing that at our club.
I think trading in Hampton with a future pick last year has hurt us. It's a good strategy at the time but it has restricted us this year.

We needed to make a hard call on a player to get back into the 2nd round or trade to GWS as part of that trade.

We definitely paid overs for Hampton given how cheaply GWS have passed out better players.

350k seems in the ballpark for Lyons i would have thought.

The great thing about Gibbs is that his deal was front loaded so he will be playing for between 400-500k pa for us. Probably half the reason Carlton are so pissed.
I think you will find that we will likely extend Gibbs' deal by a year. So essentially it will be a 4 year deal for him to come home.

The question though is that if he is that desperate to come home, why should we change contracts to make it better for him?

He is already on a good contract and wants to come back home. We also need to do whats best for the AFC.

I agree. Time to walk away before we completely sell the farm. He had a chance to come home a few years ago. We owe this kid nothing especially not a badly lop sided deal.

If we give up 2 first rounders for a 28 year old Gibbs then we are seriously %&*&%.
Another genius at work.

We could get Gibbs, Cripps and 4 future second rounders but the melters would be all wahh 2 first round picks for Gibbs!11!!

In all likelihood swapping our first for Carlton's second in 2017 is a much better result than 13 + a second rounder but carry on. Cant help stupid i guess.

Carey was a great idea poorly executed.

It really didn't seem like we did our due diligence as he wasn't fit and wasn't interested.
He smashed his knee on a stupid SANFL traditional of a square goal post. in the first year just as he was hitting form, and then in his second year driven into the ground stuffing up the knee.

I reckon you guys have to roll the dice on Gibbs or similar.

So many guns at the right age, yes 2 first rounders would hurt a bit in 5 years but you'll be better off for the next 3. Walker, Betts, Jacobs, Sloane, Jenkins etc approaching 30 why not take the punt and watch 3 years prelims(at a minimum).

Could be as little as a 1 pick downgrade
