I have some news about the trade. I have to admit that whilst it is from a good source the info is now third or fourth hand but the deal is the Carlton trade Adelaide Gibbs and Adelaide gives back our first this year and purple monkey dishwaher.

So the trade looks like this

Carlton Pick 13, Purple Monkey Dishwasher

Adelaide Gibbs

I hate this trading future draft picks bullshit - typical AFL has taken a system that was simple and effective, and made it a mess.
I quite like it. Most deals would never ever get done otherwise. In the NFL I think you can trade 3 or 4 years worth of future picks. In an era where players are higher paid then ever before I think it was the natural move to satisfy clubs.

I am inclined to be 50/50 with this. I agree to a point that he won't be the difference between a premiership or not. (franklin hasn't even got Sydney a premiership) so anyone suggesting this is being a bit unfair on Gibbs. What I do think will happen with Gibbs is he will play better in our side due to the better players around him taking pressure away from him. He isn't a star midfield general in the mould of what some people wanted but what he is is the much sought after 'icing on the cake' player. He will just add an element of class and composure to our midfield. I wouldn't write off this trade until we see what happens next year.
As has been pointed out to me... Gibbs played a large part of his career with Judd along side him, he still never really looked at being elite.

Certainly not here. We are almost the opposite. Not much trust at all.
I'm 100 percent sure I could spend a couple of days and get you 1000s of quotes over time using 'in fages we trust' 'in Roo we trust' 'in rendell we trust'

There's a lot of scepticism (and rightly so) but there are always a bunch who will follow blindly.

We used to trust Trigg. For the first few years he was quite popular. Didn't sweat the little things, we were rarely in the news for the wrong reasons, we were quite successful on field and it looked like success was coming etc.

Then...

13 and a 2017 2nd round pick should be the right money
Obviously future pick placements are unknown but as a guide, going into trade period next year would you rather
- 22, 31, 59...
- 13, 59....

If next year is a strong draft for depth then 22 and 31 over just 13 could be better. Also the alternative gives us no chips for trade week without missing out on draft talent which we won't want to do so adds some flexibility

There is every chance they want our 2nd this year and we are pushing for the downgrade instead. We could win negotiations but fans think we lost!

It really depends on draft strategy and obviously eventual placings

But that's actually paying more than the 1st round pick downgrade. With the downgrade we're still selecting a player at the draft but it's just a bit further back. The stand alone 2nd round pick means we don't get any selection.

Would love it if we had a deal with Bris where we know they will accept an early 2nd for Rocky and know this in these Carlton dealings

13 and future 1st for Gibbs and future 2nd.

Then that future 2nd for Rockliff.

Bang, we turn 2 late 1st rounders into straight swaps for Gibbs and Rockliff.

I think I'd rather we held onto the first rounder in case young Edwards turns out to be good enough to attract top 10 bids, and then if he doesn't, we can downtrade it more effectively during the 2017 trade period. Doing a downgrade now unnecessarily ties our hands in a way that may come back to haunt us.

I'm hoping it's 19, 36, 64 in that scenario haha.

What if it's a downgrade from 15 to, say, 21?

It actually makes trade week more simple and less messy, as clubs now have more currency to trade with. The problem with the system now is that loyalty is out the door and contracted players are naming their destination of choice.

What we do know is we are committed to Gibbs and they are committed to using 13. The trade will happen, I suspect both sides will be a bit unhappy.

When the news finally hits, always remember, quality remains long after price is forgotten.
I'd bet that there were a lot of Bulldogs fans who were pissed about paying T.Boyd $1 Million a year.....

Until the GF......You're spot on

I'm halfway there with you but **** me, "going all in" on Gibbs doesn't have the same ring to it as getting someone like a Parker (as we dreamed to pull off) or Treloar (as Collingwood did pull off).

won't be enough to win a flag on its own, not by a long way.
When I say all in I don't mean to stop at Gibbs. The reality is no single player is likely to be the difference. Only hope is to grab a couple via trade and free agency and hope there is enough upside with the rest of the squad.
