We need to judge what we pay vs what we get in similar trades.
When we pay more for Gibbs than we got for Danger then we need to get tougher at the trade table.
I agree, we bent over with Danger. We used the reasoning that we came out ahead of the alternative of FA rather than basing what we got on his worth which was wrong.

But thats not the point that I'm calling out.

Danger uncontracted. Gibbs contracted. That's what brings their valuations closer than they should be. If Gibbs was uncontracted we'd be getting him for peanuts.

For Danger and Kerridge we essentially got Milera, Menzel and Gore.
Gibbs looks like costing us Pick 13, and a 4-8 pick downgrade next year.

Reckon its time to walk on this one. Not worth it. He alone wont be the difference between 6th. and a flag.

Reckon we'd be better of getting Rockliff cheaper and taking 13 to the draft.
Yea imagine adding Rockliff and another first rounder to our list. Improves our list more than the other scenario

It's not a 4-8 ******* pick downgrade

It's just as likely to be 12-15 and those picks first / second round pick downgrades not 3rd/4th

Yeah lets ship Dear off ......KPF's are just so easy to find ......aggressive, mobile, ruck capabilities ......yeah, pretty much pick them up anytime

Do you guys actually think b4 you post ? ........or is it whoever is not top of mind, or just who's currently not in best 26?

I am sorry I wasnt aware that i said lets trade Dear in this post. I thought that i was just providing some background on why Dear slipped into a later round for us to select.

My mistake

You could never be blamed for it being a bad deal unless your 5 best players did ACLs and you missed the 8.

Freo, Essendon and GC will likely leap frog us next year (especially if we lose Gibbs) our 2017 second would still nab you pick 19-23
Are you trying to convince us, or are you genuinely believing it? I'm starting to become ok with it. A ten pick slide, even early in the draft, could hopefully turn out to be negligible.

Yep that looks ok, risky that we will finish high and Carlton finish low.

Lets say its 13 and 15 (top four finish) next year for Gibbs and say 23 (Carlton bottom 5) next year you would probably take it.

I'm sick of hearing 'We got less for Danger blah blah blah'. Yep we did get stiffed a bit in the deal but to get a guy with a 3yr contract still in play and with possibly 3/4 good years left, you gotta pay up.
You don't gotta pay 2 firsts for a guy with only 3/4 years left

For that price you target someone younger

This is going to be unpopular.

People seem to still want it both ways. Go aggresively for a flag, but avoid the fall.

Yeah chase gibbs... but but what about our future.

Our time is now. Weve crafted a list to challenge now. Danger left a hole and i hate him for it.

I said last year we had to replace him NOW or wed struggle this year. Many thought we'd be fine. Ultimately we had our moments but our mids were found wanting when it mattered most.

We must improve our midfield to contend. Immediately.

If we pay overs from out future... we have a fall. We get a chance to rebuild.

Stop being the mentality many claim to despise in the club. We are the club. How we respond to this trade will have impact on future big decisions . Lets respond in a manner than encourages an appropriate level of risk taking.
Well said. Look at how the Hawks handled the players leaving ... I think our club understands the difference.

Be mature, improve your list - break some eggs, make your omelette.

It's a risky move. Ideally we finish top 4 and Carlton finish bottom 4. Which means our 14-18 pick becomes 19-23. And if the draft is as good and as deep as they say there's every chance that the 10-30 ranked players are all rated equally which helps mitigate the risk further.
