Remember Mark Evans no longer works for the HFC
He actually hasn't offically started at the AFL yet and as reported on the Channel 7 news report last night, the Hawks may not let him go for another 3 weeks. Not sure why..
So we have the pleasure of his BS for potentially another 3 weeks with regards to injuries.

Yes he has made great strides over the preseason, but he needs to show top form consistently in the VFL first as he's been predominantly been a VFL reserves player so far in his career. Amos has had a good preseason, but that doesn't mean he should be rewarded with a game.

As for the special mention, that mention came after Clarko was questioned about Grimley.

Grimley's got promise, but one good practice match does not make a player of his experience worthy of AFL games.
I haven't heard the Kangaroo presser but following the Richmond game it was Clarko that brought Sam's name up. Clarkson was asked after the Richmond game about Hill ... " he's had a pretty good summer, Grimley's had a pretty good summer and Wanganeen and young Anderson " - He's been pleased with his progression and whatever thoughts we all had about Grimley 2012, Grimley 2013 is a big improver and is obviously a lot closer to AFL consideration.

I disagree that it is a prerequisite for an AFL game that you must show consistency at a lower level before promotion or you must be perceived by your peers and supporters as deserving of a spot because you have been consistent on game day at the VFL or VFL reserves level.

It's about playing your role for the team.

You could argue that from the VFL games we saw that Schneider earned his stripes -- but the club didn't have a role for him. Breust played some shocking games at VFL level just prior to being picked for the seniors as did Suckling yet they were picked because the coaching staff believed they could play their roles - and they have.

If Amos Frank and Sam Grimley have had good preseasons and we have holes in our senior playing team and the coaching staff feel that they have the attributes to make a contribution at AFL level in the role they assign to them then why shouldn't they be rewarded with a game despite little VFL experience.

And the NAB cup is about exposing the young players to a higher level and seeing how they respond. Grimley has responded well. If the coaches believe he is in better form than Bailey and can perform the role they have assigned to him better than Bailey then he should play - even against the 'terrifying Cats' - and even though Bailey has more experience.

So he didn't single out Sam then? Just lumped his media assessment with other players of the same age and experience? What did you expect him to say, "He's athletic, but doesn't have any football smarts. We're simply playing him because we're allow to play a few extra players this week."?

Every player that spent considerable time at BHH before debuting for the Hawks and now a regular showed consistent form for BHH before being given the call up. Bruest was at Hawthorn as a rookie for 2 yrs before being given opportunities midway through his 3rd year. Those first two years he wasn't consistent and thus was never in contention. He then started to show some consistency and then he was given games at Haw.

If Amos and Sam are getting games, especially early in the season, because they're needed to fill holes in the senior team, our season will be well and truely ****** at this point in time. Sam isn't even the 2nd reserve ruckman at the moment and Amos's role at this stage can be filled by others with more versatility.

Let me remind you of Majak Daw. In rd1 of the NAB Cup there was a media and North board circle jerk over him and how good his preseason was and that he's ready to tear the AFL apart because he was tall and also athletic. How's he gone since then? One good preseason game doesn't not make an AFL player.

savagelunchbox -- the key word in both my and your posts are ... If.

It is apparent that you do not rate Sam or Amos at this stage, and that's fine. I wasn't asking for an opinion on where you think Sam and Amos, or Majak Daw are in their development.

What I am saying, is that in my view, it is not a necessary prerequisite to be a consistent performer at VFL level before you can make an AFL debut. You do - again fine - agree to disagree.

There is no need on your part to generate a false quotation as to what Clarkson was thinking while praising Sam. If a players name is raised by the coach in a team sport he has been singled out for praise.

Wanganeen's pre-season suggests he is well ahead of Amos in the pecking order, with both being rookies.

I'd expect Hale, Bailey and Lowden are all still ahead of Grimley as ruck/forwards.
Hale and Bailey yes but I doubt Lowden would be picked ahead of Grimley atm.

As ruckman I'd agree but I think right now Grimely has them all covered as a forward except probably Hale. It comes down to what you wan't/expect from your second ruck. I think a Hale/Bailey combo is worse than a Hale/Grimely combo because Bailey can only rest on the bench as he is worse than useless as a forward. Can't mark and can't chase his opponent. If we go into the match with Hale, Grimely and Roughy, and Sam is getting beaten in the ruck we can always sub him off and play shorter in the backs while Roughy is in the ruck (which would only be for short bursts to relieve Hale. Our best ruck combo is Roughy/Hale and it will be interesting to see how we manage that combo throughout the season.
