Kids are usually spoilt and have tons of toys and clothing they will probably never play with, need or grow out of.

I'm usually an outside the box kind of guy particularly when it comes to gift giving and provide a lot of thought as it genuinely brings me joy to put a smile on faces of people I care about.

My first and only niece so far is about to turn 1 in a couple of weeks and I haven't really gotten into the swing of things being an uncle as I don't have a strong woman figure in my life to guide me in times of peril. As years pass by and the increasing likelihood of having my own children diminishes on a year to year basis I figure I will feature much more prominently in her life as she grows, which is why I want to make each gift something special rather then just a token pressie from a relo.

She is the type of kid that would rather play with the packaging rather then the contents which I admire as she is given a lot of shit presents. Problem is I don't want to be another statistic. If I give clothes she will only grow out of them in 6 months.

I'm really lost with this one.

I'd love to get her something that will stand the test of time, not something that will only be thrown away. It doesn't have to be something useful for her now as she has more then enough toys and clothing, but something that can stand the test of time would be ideal.

If anyone could provide any suggestions or discuss gifts they've given in the past that would be much appreciated.

Definitely a drum kit or a banjo.

But srsly, a girl I know, her parents gave her a charm bracelet when she was younger and for every significant event in her life they get her a different charm eg. a car charm for getting her drivers licence, a plane charm for her first overseas trip, a book charm for finishing school etc etc. Probably not something that is of immediate use to a 1 year old but it was a nice idea I thought.

When I become an uncle I'm gonna buy one of those gigantic man-size teddy bears for the kid. Moreso to piss off my brother than anything:D but they'd be great to cuddle with I feel :p

Or if you want to be super uncle then get her a Carlton membership:)

Get her a box, put a photo of Nicholas Cage inside the box and then wrap the box in special Nicholas Cage wrapping paper. She'll definitely remember it.:thumbsu:

I bought all my nieces and nephew's a pillow with their name on it for their first Christmas. They can keep it forever, it is unique and it wont be simply chucked out. Depending on what you want it to look like, there are SO many options. I bought them through a local bedding shop and only set me back about $40.

Her mother would love the membership but her Dad might disown me being a mad Bomber lol

I like the idea of the bracelet, that's the sort of thinking I was hoping for when making this thread.

Get her a giant teddy bear. As big as you can find. Parents will never be able to get rid of it because it's too noticeable. :thumbsu:

Musical instruments from 2 onwards. An engraved harmonica is awesome (and also easy to play and have fun with).

My advice for future presents is to always keep an ear out and be prepared months in advance. Waiting until the last minute will only result in gift vouchers.
