Gil will earn more than entire Women's League

Last night was an insight into what football must have been like in the early days, long before the entertainment side when it was first invented and the competitors were raw. How many years have league footballers played the game as amateurs, while still working another job. It wasn't that long ago that the men's competition became fully professional and full time. The idea that the women's game will become fully professional in full time in the first year or so is not realistic. This is something that has to be built with dedication and hard work.

Let me tell you something, and it's going to blow your mind. There are thousands of men who have jobs but also train hard and play footy for no payment.

ITT: People who don't understand economics

If the AFLW continues in a such a strong form I'm sure these ladies will be remunerated much better in the years to come
Don't go near Facebook then. So far today I've seen three posts saying last night "proves" that women's afl is just as big as men's and that women should be asking for what they deserve, and they deserve the same pay as male players

Good idea. Let's spend $80 million on player salaries for a league with no gate takings and no tv deal currently

and there's also thousands of men who skip training, and smash out a slab after a game for no payment :p

Here is my analogy for why the women should be paid as they are or roughly as they are.

Take two painters. Painting is a subjective art form. The value is in the eye of the beholder. The two painters might work equally hard. Or one might work harder. One might be technically better. One might have studied art one might not have. At the end of the day. When the two canvases go up. It's not.. who worked hardest. Who put the most hours in. Who is more deserving.

It's who pays the most for the canvas.

And at the moment. The men sell for more.

As a non white, out of work dude, I request that everyone not give in to the socialist viewpoints.

Giving everyone an equal wage, while ignoring unequal returns (eg sponsorship/gate receipt, etc), is a recipe for stupidity and communism.
We need more people who think like yourself.

I must admit I think of public companies in Aust, at least there we have the Two strikes rule on remuneration reports, which apparently has reduced CEO salaries by 10-20% over the last 5 years.

As pointed out earlier, the AFL doesn't even need to tell us their salaries? Not a public company, but given the special tax status of footy, they should be subjected to some public checks/balances IMO.

Anyway, I've seen Gil about town, he doesn't move 200 times faster, and doesn't think 200 times faster than your average woman.

the great victory of CEOs was to normalise the idea that they are indeed 50-100 times better/harder workers than the average.

They don't need to be 50-100 times better.

If you've got an investment and having an 'average' person in change will make $100M off it, and a 'good' person will make $101M, then it's still a win if you have to pay an extra $250k to hire the 'good' person, even though they're only 1% better.

The standard is just so ordinary!

I agree, I enjoyed the event today but the game was awful. Not sure it is going to improve any time soon. The AFL won't let it fail, they would pay people to attend if they had to but I don't see how it can expand for a long time.

Yep, once the media and PC crowd stroking dies down and novelty is gone, expect to see VFL crowds at best.
6 goals and a disposal efficiency of 53% wins you a game. Great case for a payrise there.
Good to see something never change with the Dogs getting double the frees lol

In all honesty - I reckon this league will go from strength to strength in its current format. Like the big bash, a quick tournament that has a bit of novelty and entertainment. A lot of people are keen for the footy to start, and these people are watching. The quality isn't great, but it's not poor either, and it will only improve as time goes on. Once it establishes itself with its own following who care about the results, then it's time to go to a full replica of the men's league. And perhaps even their own unique clubs/franchises, because then the amount of teams in each state can be controlled easily.

Are people really arguing about this? This is why the huffington post and all othe extreme on line 'news' sites now exists. Left or right. How is it a story that a company CEO responsible for a 2 billion dollar industry earns more than every player in a semi professional comp that has been started for the betterment of the game? It's not news it's a tale designed for extreme lefts to punch the air and continue to support these online news companies and generate some serious income. The CEO of every bank earns more than the collective wage of their tellers! Really?! Of course, the ability of a CEO shapes the futures of thousands of employees and in a sporting sense where they're the arbitrators of every stakeholder they deserve every cent.

When the novelty factor and AFL seasons starts this will be a quick fall, AFL won't let it fail, clubs and fans will pay for it in the long run.

This has been shoved down our throats for 12 months did people really think crowds would be small the first couple weeks?

Gil runs a million dollar business, this shouldn't even be up for discussion.

Don't kid yourself the quality is worse than local leagues, maybe 4 players on each team can kick the ball in anything other than the general direction of forward indiscriminately ( That's if they can pick the ball up at all).

I didn't expect anything close to the level of the men's in terms of skill or fitness but this is disgraceful.

I get it's semi pro but this woman is not an athlete, she's obese in a game that requires massive amounts of fitness and athleticism.

The talent pool is clearly too small for so many teams, it should have started with 4 teams round robin home and away then a top 2 final.

I get this isn't going to go over well with some but If the Crows GWS game I watched today is anything to go by this league will quickly become a punchline rather than a serious competition. The AFL over-reached and I'm not sure how they salvage this.

The quality is irrelevant, I follow a local league ( my junior team, that I ended up coming back to) and I follow that more than the afl. It's not the level of afl but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it. Look there's nothing wrong with having no interest in the women's league, I probably watched 10-15 min of it all up but don't forget that these players are the best in this comp. Compering them to the men is irrelevant, they still have to beat their opponents to make it to the pinnacle of their sport which is bloody hard to do. Serene Williams wouldn't beat most men, do we discount her acheivments, same as swimmers, etc. no matter what you do in life, you have to strive to be th best. Don't sit on your couch and dismiss it as irrelevant beacause it's a poor standard.

That's not the point I was making Serena Williams is fast strong and an extremely skilled athlete. The people you tried to compare the W-AFL players to work extremely hard, eat right, train extensively and get into peak physical condition a lot of the time without getting much in terms of funding.

A lot of the W-AFL players are not this, If an unfit obese person is at the pinnacle of the sport that's not a good thing.

This isn't local leagues it's an attempt to create a competitive professional womans AFL, if it's going to ever be taken seriously it needs to be held to some kind of standard. I believe that entails at least a base level of physical fitness and I don't think that's to much to ask.

Yes, I am one of them. Mind remains intact. Those men do not put in the time that AFL players do, they do a lot of time at the clubs. Let me tell you something that will blow your mind, there is significantly more to elite football than training.

Im not that worried about Gil getting $1.74 million but there are 10 'excutives" see middle management (what do they actually do) that are on $650,000 = $12.000 a week and this is way too much for ex players and no doubt other football industry mates sucking the teat.
These people are worth no more than $250,000 at the most No wonder the AFL lost $17 million last year. And have just borrowed $280 million to pay for Docklands Stadium The money saved on these people could easily pay some the interest on the loan.

Its typical of bloated bureaucraies which BTW looks like the AFL is quickly becoming that the salaries are usually way over the top.
Looks like a lot of the lovely TV money is being squandered.Time for the new Chairman to sharpen the pencil is suggest.

This is the sort of problem the Eddie and the other club presidents should be asking tough questions about.
