hello everyone!

no-one is mentioning lindsay gilbee as a backline upgrade option....he is averaging 80 and has averaged nearabouts there for the past 2 seasons as well....surely he is someone that should be highly considered as an upgrade target this week??

he has bottomed out in price and is cheaper than he has been in a long time and cheaper than he probably ever will be again at $303 000

he is averaging higher than goddard and milburn, yet is a great deal cheaper....

i was gonna upgrade ellis to him....does everyone else think this is a good idea based on my thoughts just mentioned.....any ideas?

yea next week im upgrading pfeiffer and am seriously looking at gilbs absolute bargain at 300k is as good as milburn and prety close to goddard so yea i think hes a great option

i reckon the bulldogs will have a few fire against sydney....there are just way too many players for sydney to hold....gilbee, akermanis, cooney, griffin, giansiracusa, murphy etc etc.

i just dunno why gilbee isnt getting any attention he has been a great DTer and he is cheap as chips this week...ellis to him is an upgrade this week yet it is almost a straight swap

i have a backline of:

shaw
symes
birchall
gram
waters
ellis
ibbotson

proud
hartlett

ellis to gilbee this week and then when chad comes down a bit more and ibbotson increases more i will upgrade ibbo to chornes....is that ok??

thoughts greatly appreciated....?

Terribly inconsistent, although that doesn't really matter. If putting up with consistent 60s and 70s all for a 120 every two months is your thing, then he's your man.

Not sure why you'd pick him up this week. B/E of 60 something and we're playing Sydney.

You could do worse though.

EDIT: That first part really doesn't make sense.

Gilbee is not as good as you think he is, I enjoy watching him as a player, but in DT terms you'd expect him to be much better than he actually is. His best season was in 05 when he averaged 84. The last two seasons he's only managed 78.
With the backline in a shambles this year his relative value has increased, but I still don't rate him in the same league as Goddard/Milburn/Cornes/Bowden/Shaw

Too inconsistant (DT wise)
He might score 120 in a row for 2 weeks but then might score 70-60-40-50-40-50 for next few games.

2005: 84
2006: 81
2007: 79

huh? Never averaged 78(close enough though). Last year he suffered from a calf strain that put him out for a couple of games and was playing only 80% all year after missing a massive chunk of the pre-season with the same injury. He's over it now i expect him to average 80+.

Gilbee has become such a dangerous player that he actually gets tagged.

but, i like him for his yearly output. he doesn't miss too many games nowadays. averages 1 goal per game (which is ace for a halfback). :thumbsu:
doesn't take enough easy marks though.

I picked up both Gilbee and Goddard this week. Not expecting Gilbee to score well against Sydney, but I got him this week rather than taking a zero and getting him next week. He's my 6th back at the moment.

im thinking of one of these players to start for me ...
gilbee
lake
ibbotson

thoughts? not sure if ibbo will be consistent

Don't touch Lake. He's a full back that takes marks from oppositions kicks and some times get a few more cheapies when the dogs kick backwards to switch the play. But he is an honest full back and will have games were he scores less then 50.

2006 includes two finals where he scored 50 and 30-odd. Are you using FF? Numbers must be different. http://www.finalsiren.com/PlayerStats.asp?PlayerID=824

i think your post should say that he is alot better than he is given credit for....he is very consistant when u see his last 3 years has averaged 84, 81, and 79 and again this year 79.5....so he is consistant across the board

and really, in the backs where it has been so unreliable this year, isnt it a good idea to go with someone that you know will average about 80 for the rest of the year and will only cost $300 000???

am i way off or do i have valid points?? ...maybe im wrong....opinions??

As a few have said, he can pull big numbers out.

I have him in my side, as I do most years. With the backline players playing how the are, he's definitely not the worst selection.

No, your right. They're valid points in their own right. But I think you are overrating him as a DTer. He is solid without being exceptional. Similar to Milburn but averages a bit less. Not bad given the lack of good options this year though.

Agree Beau. He gets sat on regularly and Milburn is better value in a team that racks em up. Milburn will get back to his 85 average and is well priced but even better next week if you can wait.

Love this guy.
I rate him infront of Goddard but people have taking me off him. His break even is 63 so hopefully has an average fortnight to I can upgrade Mattner to him.

Next week Ellis ---> Goddard
Stevens ---> Marc Murphy

One thing to keep in mind is that Gilbee's game is very dependant on how the bulldogs are going, he'll score a ot higher if the team is winning.

This is due to a couple of reasons. If the dogs are up and the game needs to be iced, expect Gilbee to be right in the thick of the cheap marks. Also if the dogs are up by a fair margin, Gilbee will be given more of a license to roam and attack, the last quarter against the eagles is a great example of this, played tight for the first 3 quarters then did as he pleased in the last.

From the games I've watched this year I don't think he'll average 85 with the roles he's been asked to play. Has been played KP a lot more than previous years, due largely to Egan being out. The last two weeks has seen him switch on to ROK and Pav as Mackie and Taylor have not been able to handle them, if Milburn is to get back to his points scoring form then these two need to improve drastically.
