today the commentators where saying how they would like to see gilchrist bat at 6, now i can only see this as a possiblity if an allrounder was able to hold down the number 7 spot. Now our allrounders at the moment at prominence in first class cricket are S.LEE scores runs but bowling does not penetrate, I .Harvey takes wicket but batting is no where consistent enough and bowling may not be penetrable. So my suggestion is we have to look to the future, their are 4 allrounders of note coming through the ranks. M.Miller good swing bowler, bats well, shows alot of potential about 22yrs old.
B.Oliver:swing bowler may lack penetration skillful batsmen
S.Watson: Bowls with good pace and bats very well,
S.Kremeskothen:Bowls cutter, may not be penetrating enough, solid batsmen

At the moment watson seems like the player most likely to be able to hold a spot in his state team on his bowling and batting ability, though all these young players careers are very new.
what do u guys think

The way the tail has batted during the series - Brett Lee could almost go to 7 to free up another bowling option. He has been on fire.

Based on results over the last couple of years, I think the dual role played by Gilchrist should be capitalised on by playing 6 batsmen plus Gilly as is currently being done, rather than a fifth bowler. Obviously an all-rounder is preferred for one of those batting spots, however Gilchrist is as much an all-rounder as any other player in world cricket, just not a bat&bowl all-rounder.

Other bands play, Manowar KILL !!!!!!!!!

The balance of the side is fine as it is. Why not take advantage of Gilly's batting and play him at seven. It allows us to have the best four bowlers available and seven top line batsmen.

We went through all this back in the 80's when we were trying to play three or four all rounders, few of whom would have made the side as specialists. Harvey for example would not make the side as a specialist batmen or bowler. I would have liked to see Blewett in the Adelaide test as a third seamer but he could also make the side just a specialist batsman so you wouldn't have been losing much by replacing Martyn.

Personally I'd go with:

Slats
Gilchrist
Langer
Ponting
Mark Waugh
Steve Waugh
Martyn
Brett Lee
Funky Miller
Warnie
Oh Ah GM

12th man: Dizzy (if its turning)

Who is Hayden sleeping with to keep his place? Classic flat track bully...

Bit tough on Gilly to stand behind the stumps for a day or so, in the play all of the time and then have to go out and bat after a ten minute break.

What chance Punter or Langer opening and Martyn at seven?

Test Side

1. Slater
2. Elliot (Better than Hayden)
3. Ponting (Great talent wasted at 6)
4. M.Waugh
5. S.Waugh
6. Katich (Great talent and Martyn and Langer 4 years older)
Gilchrist
Lee
Warne
Gillespie
McGrath
12th Miller (Depending on condition of pitch)

No McGill = Hes shithouse.....gets cheap wickets....

My 12 for India.

Slater
Hayden (had a consistent series)
Langer
M.Waugh
S.Waugh
Ponting (fine where he is, particulary if we have a top order collapse)
Gilchrist (ditto)
B.Lee
Miller
Gillespie
G.McGrtah

12th Man: S.Mcgill (him in the 11 for Gillespie if the wicket is turning)

------------------
"Collingwood forever"

McGill is pretty capable but does seem to get a lot of wickets with crap balls (ie: long hops and full tosses caught) - Elliott WAS a better player than Blewett, Hayden and Martyn but not up on his latest form. While I think Hayden is a flat track bully he has been very unlucky with run outs this series so can't realistically be dropped on current form.

Frankly, a trip to India will probably see him dropped - it better because he will struggle with lateral movement on seaming English pitches - like Gilly did in the early part of the 99 World cup til he got used to it.

Ponting at 6 v 3 is the same debate as S.Waugh at 6,5 or 3 - what is the answer? Mark Waugh averages 8 or 9 less than SW, but has superior grace and timing and, if he's coming in earlier would logically be the better player - and yet the stats say the opposite.

Cricket is a funny game.

I say continue with Langer in India - he'll come good. Katich, Martyn & Elliott will all get their chance when the Waugh's retire.

Gilchrist is an allrounder - why change the team to include Warne's lost brothers Shane Lee and Ian Harvey who are all ROUND talents? It's not a handicap race.
