What about Pick 9 and Graham to GWS for Pick 13 and Giles?

Giants improve what is expected to be their last live pick and gain a mature ruckman to support Grundy, Phillips and Downie. Sure Graham's no star, but he would certainly be a better option than a retired Mark Blake.
If he's to be traded, I'd say a Giles + #13 combo would be floated.

I'm not sure if #9 gets us to where we want to be though (Plowman maybe?) Would Richmond pay and play him as a first ruck (obviously not played ahead of Maric, but first 22?)

I think they would use a setup of Riewoldt and Vickery as key forwards and Giles as third tall forward/second ruck. Then if Maric went down, Giles would move into first ruck. Have heard that it is us, Adelaide and Collingwood interested.

I think the only obstacle in your way regarding Plowman@9 would be the Doggies. I do think pick 6 is a bit of a reach for him though, so I like your chances.

Obviously SOS has a value on him as he has for each and every player on their list and believes he shouldn't be paid overs which could lead to interfering with contracts of the younger brigade.

Hope the Tiges don't go after him as a team with Giles, Maric, Vickery & Riewoldt would be a bit on the slower side.

doesnt want to pay overs? hahaha, didnt seem to bother him with regards to $cully

$cully was GWS' attempt of getting a big scalp equivalent to GC's Gary Ablett without the establishment of being an elite footballer. Now the rest of the list has to take a little pay cut for Scully's deal. Personally i would cough the extra coin for Giles as he will be a solid contributor and can match it with the rest of the man mountains.

Giles wants to come home to SA, but if the Crows dont come up with the goods he will go where his best opportunites are.
And now the crows have moved on Tippett and Knights they have over 1 million bucks to splash around. Money isnt an issue for the crows.

Isn't Graham out of contract? So GWS could sign him straight up as an uncontracted player? No need for a trade.

I don't really get the theory behind the Giles negotiations either, but my suspicion was that GWS didn't budget for Giles to have the year that he had. They would've had their plans laid out, and assumed that Giles would have an adequate year and be willing to sign on for another couple of years on the cheap, so less than what they're now offering him. "Unfortunately" Giles lit it up, so is looking for more cash and a longer contract which threw out the calculations. Blake probably comes into the picture because he'll presumably be willing to sign on for less than what Giles was being offered.

Spot on, dlanod. Could not have put it better myself.

Like the Suns, the Giants would have had a fairly long term plan with who gets paid what (roughly) at what periods of time so they can best manage their salary cap. Especially with their huge stockpile of first rounders, it's a very delicate situation to try and keep all the talent. And while it does leave room for flexibility, I don't think many would have expected Giles to have the impact he did at AFL level, after showing what he did at NEAFL level anyway. Especially after they just finished re-signing a heap of players for X amount, it's quite possible that they just cannot offer Giles that amount, or they risk losing out on someone else.

GC had a similar issue with Dixon this year. Had a decent-ish first year in 2011, was offered a 12 month extension at the beginning of 2012. He rejected it and then proceeded to smash it for us. Completely unexpected, and likely threw a wrench into some of the plans. Fortunately we managed to secure him for a 3 year contract on what he's now worth. Fingers crossed GWS can do the same.

Getting off-topic, but with Dixon it wouldn't surprise me if they'd budgeted that kind of money for him in the first place. GC has had pretty high hopes for him all along, but tried to sign him up on the cheap after his form slump (totally reasonable intent).

I think if GWS had any idea Giles would pull out the year he had, they would've signed him up for a two or three year contract from day 1, not a one year contract to start with.

Biggest dilemma for the Crows re: Giles is how much is a backup ruckman worth paying for. $200,000 tops, I would have thought.

Surely port would be interested. They dont have a decent ruck and he would be good for 4+ years.

They probably have a decent chance to get him as a unrestricted free agent if he doesn't sign another contract :)

I think Giles should look at going back to Port no doubt he would be there leading ruck perfect fit for mine.

Giles was in Adelaide last week.
So if Giles doesnt want to stay at GWS does he have to be traded for or can he just go to his club of choice as been an uncontracted GWS player?

Being from Adelaide he could just be there for the off-season break, a lot of the players are currently back home.

He'd have to be traded (or PSD, highly unlikely that GWS would allow it to get to that stage)

Just sign him up Giants i say. You can have all the good young midfielders in the land but they need a decent ruckman to palm them the ball. NOT Mark Blake

What other currently listed rucks would they be looking at now that Minson's now re-signed with the Dogs. McIntosh and Graham would be near the top of the list. What about Billy Long... oh wait he went to Brisbane

Brodie Grundy is incoming as a top 3 pick.

What's needed is someone who can hold down the fort for 2-3 years; ideally Giles will be re-signed as the incumbent. If not, there's still uncontracted signings available this year. Not sure who's on the market though, it seems a bit scarce.

Would happly see him back at Port.
But cant see us wanting to have so many Ruckman (all be it developing and avg at the moment) on the list
Renouf
Lobbe
Reden
Curnow
Webb

Can delist Webb but would 4 be to many in a team that only went into a game with 2 ruckman a couple times?

Do GWS only have 200k left in the cap? If they have room and still refuse to pay up who else do they need to sign up? Maybe they're still looking at poaching a player from another club.

Renouf and Webb are no good get rid of them Giles had a fantastic year and is streets ahead of your ruckman at this stage. Think Lobbe and Redden will be ok in a few years.
