December flyer

Stephen Gilham. "(He) is having a very solid pre-season after injury interruptions last year and it has been great to see the development of players in their second pre-season such as Ryan Schoenmakers, Carl Peterson, Shane Savage and Liam Shiels." - general manager of football operations Mark Evans.

Good news.

Very good news. People do forget Gilham may aswell have missed 2009 with the injuries he suffered. It wasn't just Croad out, we usually had 4-5 defenders missing at one time out of 7-8 that play the roles in matches from our best 22.

Ladson/Croad/Gilham/Ellis/Dew all missed a chunk.

Noted that Dew and likely Croad won't be back, however at least now we have a pre-season to build defensove cohesion with the new 8-10 players we choose to use in our defence throughout the year.

Birchall and Guerra missed a few aswell.

Hodge and Brown played other roles further up ground and when playing, they played injured alot to.

Our defence will surprise people if it stays healthy. It is a very underated back 6, and like most teams, we don't have much depth in this area. The greatest asset to a team is stability, and this holds true even more so to your back 6.

Stay Fit Hawkers.

Gilham has to be one of the most, if not THE most, underrated player on our list. He is an extremely solid defender (and Im referring to both performance and physical strength). He has bulked up considerably ever since he arrived to our club, and his skills are incredible for such a tall player.

He will remain and continue to overperform as our full-back for the next 5 years, injury permitting.

The next Matthew Scarlett? I think yes.

Don't think Gilham will be the next Matthew Scarlet, but if he is half as good then i will take that!

Hopefully Gilham stays injury free during the year and he has a solid year with Gibson, Brown and Hodge down back.

SG is just about the most important player on our list.
Not as good as Croad '1 on 1' but a better link man.

This needs to be our backline every week
Guerra Gilham Gibson/Murphy
Birchall Shoe Ladson/Whitecross
Ellis/Hodge play as defensive mid.
Brown to play back as required.
Our fwd line & midfield is v good. If we can get the backline together we can challenge for the flag.
Our rucks are stuffed but we just have to work around that until big Max comes good.

Gilham is often the 'go to man' out of defence because he is such an accuate kick. I think his kicking efficiency is one of the highest in the AFL.

i hate the herald sun, even since that stupid fork in the croad article, i think they are full of it.

december flyer: gilham.....well he is injured and has been training in the rehab group....so i am sure they misquoted here!!! but yes, gilham will have a great year

Gilham played in the match practice on 23rd Dec and looked fit.

Gilham has a role to play and does it well - that of a third tall that rebounds well, but he is not a top quality fullback, let alone Scarlett's bootlace.

Glad he is "flying", but sorry folks, even the coaches never give him the tough jobs down back.

What?

You mean Gilham is the next arrogant, overrated tosser who panics every time he plays on Buddy Franklin?

.

Pretty much share that view. Gilly is a good size now IF IF IF he can take a lock down defensive role on decent opponents we are in great shape.

Last year his knees looked shot. Prior to that he seems to have improved every year he has been with us.

Is an arrogant pig who does panic on buddy, plays for the free kick too much. Just watch 08gf. He handed dew the last of his 3qtr goals by throwing himself on the ground in a 1on1 contest. but as much as it hurts me 2 say it, he aint overrated.
