In England everyone has been pretty preoccupied with Brett Lee, obviously due to his extreme pace & the fact that he has had such a rip roaring start to his Test career but I've always thought that if Gillespie can put his injuries behind him (a big if) then he has it in him to be an awesome bowler. His bowling last night against England was pretty special, he is very similar to McGrath physically & can obviously do the same sort of things ie bowling just short of a length & giving the batsman nothing to hit but he can also crank up the pace a bit & swings it as well-I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the top wicket taker this series (unless he gets injured).

Who will open the bowling in the Tests? Will it be McGrath & Lee with Gillespie coming on first change or will it depend on who's bowling the best at the time?

I've long said that Gillespie is the best of the Aussie fast bowlers. much to the amusement of most. He and McGrath should open the bowling in the tests - Gillespie has on several occasions torn the guts out of a batting side with quick early wickets. Leave Brett Lee to bowl first change, and bring Lee on again at the end to blast out the tail.

I don't know if there is a statistic available somewhere, but at a guess I would say that Gillespie has the highest percentage of high order wickets, while Warne often flatters himself by getting carted then cleaning up the tail.

I think the only time the 3 all played together was in Perth v WI last summer. McGrath & Lee opened in both innings, but maybe thats cos it was in Perth.

Anyay Dip, way its looking at the moment, all 5 games will be washed out!

Hey LD what you doing on here? It's taken you long enough huh?Good to have you aboard though mate.

That Gillespie performance, even though I was in Oz at the time, I remember as being an awesome display of fast bowling & partly what I've based my views on.

RE the weather-it might be our best hope mate!

Regardless of who is first change,, imagine the delight in the Poms opening/top order batters that have a huge sigh of relief after seeing off the opening bowlers only to be confronted by Gillespie/Lee and then Warne...........utter despair I would think.

Against England I think Warne has an edge over the English but against the rest of the world I think it is quickly diminishing.
Personally I am disgusted that Macgill didnt get picked as he is at the moment the best spinner oz has.
Miller gets picked cause he bowls the other way to warne but I think thats a load of ****e excuse,,, they are worried about his onfield demeanour I think more than anything.
Miller,, test player of the year,,,, another load of crap.........
MacGill has obviously upset someone, cause he would do very well in England but for some reason he doesn't get picked.
Anyhow,, thats how I see it

I'm not sure what Gillespies figures ended up being last night vs. Pakistan (had to go to bed). But his first spell was one of the unluckiest I can remember since Danny Morrison last came out here with the Kiwis.

He repeatedly went past the outside edge and every nick went to third man for four - I think he was 0-50 off about 8 overs. Horrible figures, but he actually bowled really really well. Looked like getting a wicket every ball. The battle between him and Anwar was sensational as well.

I think Gillespie will have a great ashes tour and could possibly be top wicket taker. Warney - hope he goes well, but I think it might be time for him to stand down let Magilla into the team as he is easily the best spinner in the country. How he didn't get picked for India I'll never know.....

Ahem... TOLD YA'S SO!!! :D

Yeh mate you're right to an extent BUT it was Warnie who came on & broke the Atherton/Butcher partnership in the 1st innings when they were looking very settled & after McGrath & Lee had bowled pretty averagely.
Let's face it Warne bowled well, he was getting a lot of turn & I reckon he could have run through the England top order if he'd been given the chance.(mind you I reckon I'd have a chance of knocking those dummies over either in my guise as a non-spinning off spinner or my other style which is medium paced fast bowling);)

Trescothick aside, you've got 10 tailenders! :p

Its long been a belief with England in Oz that its 3 out all out.
Pretty much proved the theory last test i think.
If you look back to the last series in England, Mcgrath and Gillespie got hammered in the 1st test cause they where getting used to conditions.
The same could be held with Brett Lee I suppose.
Maybe he can make his mark in the 2nd test if there is anything left when he gets a turn.

Well I don't know if 3 out all out is totally fair-I mean Atherton,Trescothick,Stewart all made 50's in the 1st test & Thorpe & Hussain have proved that they can make runs the rest are pretty useless.....except of course for Andy Cad**** the new Ian Botham.......oh no I forgot he bowled like a ****.

Dipper, whats the reaction in England regarding Atherton being appointed stand-in captain for the next test match over Trescothick? I was hoping Gough would of been given the nod, at least he's got the most fire in his belly and can really get your side pumping

Yeah well Gough said he wanted a go but everyone just laughed & treated it like a joke which is maybe a bit unfair on him but personally I think he would have been pretty poor-he's not the sharpest knife in the draw.
The trouble with bringing back Atherton is that he had bad body language & didn't look like the sort of guy that could fire up his team which is where Hussain is much better than him as a captain.
A few of the commentators like Botham who always want to blood young players were saying give it to Tescothick but the guys only played a year of Test cricket, he's not captain of his county & he's our best bet to make runs-so we don't want the added pressure of captaincy to screw his batting.

Personally I reckon we could have got William Shatner in as captain & it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference, until the batsmen learn how to build a big innings then we're DOOMED.

If William Shatner was gonna be the Captain Dipper, would Andy Cadd ick do his best to be Mr Spock?
