I agree it will be so much sweeter when we finally do, especially if its against West Coast. This reminds me of Bulls being beaten in the Eastern conference finals by the Pistons year after year, then the Bulls destroyed the Pistons in the ECF and went on to win the title with ease.

Exactly how I see it, geez I remember those days and Detriot fans giving it not only to the Bulls fans but in particular Michael Jordan.

In the words of the great Jordan 'It was a hurdle we kept getting upto but couldnt get over'

Maybe the AFC needs to 'learn how to fly':thumbsu:

But we could also be like Patrick Ewing and the New York Knick when MJ and Pip used to knock them out year after year until the team got to old to be competitive.

Or we could be like Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets where we need Chris Judd to prematurely retire for a few years to give us that window

It seems that perspective is something that a lot of people are lacking.
I for one don't think that we have failed or 'choked' in the last two years. The reality is that we have probably overachieved. I know a lot of people don't think that is possible, but consider this:
West Coast, St. Kilda, Sydney, Melbourne & Fremantle have better lists IMHO. How then have we made it into the final 4 two years in a row?
We should be thrilled with our efforts not worried. I actually think we are going through our rebuilding phase now! Craigy has already stated that we (meaning AYERS!) were neglectful in the development of our list for several years and that he is now trying to change that. This development is being fast tracked so that there is no drop off when the Macca's, Roo's etc.. retire. I expect these guys to play at least another year or two at which stage VB, Douglas, Knights, Porp, Vince, Johncock, Thompson (I hope!) etc.. will be ready to take that step into the midfield leaders.
Keep the faith people!

With respect, I think this mentality only makes failure acceptable - now and in the future.

In 2005/06:

  • We won a Minor Premiership at Subiaco.
  • Had a highly impressive 33-11 Minor Round win/loss record in this period.
  • In 2005 had the lowest 'Against' total since St Kilda in 56 B.C.
  • In 2006 had a mammoth percentage given our overall dominance and competitiveness for much of the minor round.
  • Have made our #1 bogey team, Collingwood, our bitches (4-0 including 2 wins in Melbourne and a 110-point thrashing).
  • Have obliterated another one of our bogeyteams, Essendon, by 88 and 138 points.
  • Have gone a long way towards making the Showdown ledger look respectable, with 4 wins in 5 - including that Semi Final demolition.
  • Have maintained our ownership of Sydney, who look like going back to back in this time period (3-0 including 2 wins in Sydney).
  • Have beaten Freo 3 times out of 4, including once at Subiaco and in the Qualifying Final when they were raging favourites.
  • With the obvious exception of the ill-fated 2005 Qualifying Final, we have enjoyed an impressive record against the so-called 'Best List in the Comp' - smashing them in consecutive years at the Telstra Dome.
  • We've won in every state we've played in during the past two seasons.
  • Won six All-Australian selections - three in each year.

If that's 'overachieving' then we must be the biggest donks in the history of football.

As I've said, if you factor in 2002 and 2003 as well, to not make at least one Grand Final in the past five years is bitterly disappointing, and it should be unacceptable to everyone involved with the club.

The boys would be really hurting and this, in my opinion means that they will want revenge.

I expect them to work harder next yr and, if they get the same oppurtunity they wont let it slip again!

Good post, DT, some impressive stats there that make the loss even harder to take.

The problem is that in both years we have shown we have Sydney's measure (two away wins at SCG) yet because of our inability to beat West Coast, when it counts, we will probably see the cup in Sydney yet again (similar to 1973 VFL series - in that year, Richmond had North Melbourne's measure, North Melbourne had Hawthorns and Hawthorn had Richmonds but Hawks didn't get a chance to play Richmond in the finals because of their inability to beat North Melbourne). When was the last time a back to back premier didn't beat every side in the comp over that two year period!

Bring on 2007.
