The AFL must be really shaking in their boots over the crowd attendances this year. Many clubs have now resided to the fact of promoting stupid gimmicks to get people to the footy. First, we had Liberty Financial buying out Colonial Stadium for the WB v Saints match. Second, we had Garry Lyon and Gerard Healy heavily promote on their evening radio program - the world's biggest pie night (Melbourne v Brisbane - which explains why 25,000 went along), kids got in for nicks, and got a pie and coke. St Kilda and Port tomorrow night, the Saints are giving away movie tickets and timezone tickets. The wood-ducks and West Coast, some lucky person is going to win a car - a Volvo. Last and not least - the Tigers apparently are looking at holding the world's largest sausage sizzle. The reason why people aren't going to the footy is Waverley, it's the obvious, it's making these gimmicks a joke. What does anyone else think??

Blood Stained Angel

If the Pies gave your club a Volvo, they would take it quick smart. They need the cash. I agree with one thing that idiot KS says, the Swans have bled the AFL dry many times over their licence fee entry. Remember the bail out in the early 90s?

So if you dont want to win a $75,000 car you must either be very well off or not very well off in the head department.

Ok Greg - I do take your point on that, I'm as aware as anyone else about the Swans getting lots of favours, lots of money and having lots of debt written off

Fine, nobody is denying we have been in an awful mess in the past.

But on the other side of the coin there is the fact that the Swans pioneered live TV coverage of the game throughout Australia and this alone has generated untold wealth for the AFL that has been re-distributed to some very grateful Melbourne-based clubs.

Make no mistake, it was the broadcasting revenue earned by televising Swans games out of Sydney that basically kept this game afloat financially in the 1980's.

I'm certainly not proud to admit that the AFL has thrown millions at the Swans and millions more at promoting the game north of the border but please don't fall for that tired old line about how the game has gained nothing in return, its just not true as the figures bear out - it has proved to be a wise investment.

As for Volvos ? - you either love 'em or hate 'em and I hate 'em.

I wouldn't be seen dead in one of those awful contraptions no matter how much the damn thing costs.
