Menchov with the win and most likely in Pink. Levi was 20 seconds further back

Di Luca finished 6th, 1:54 back. Leaves Deni with a 34 seconds lead in GC

I wouldn't be upset to see Menchov win the Giro. It's highly doubtful but I'll cheer him on.

disagree, Levi is not the man to come from behind, because he is a metronome.

Only guy who can beat Menchov is Diluca I believe.

edit: don't know what I was disagreeing with Trojan. Obviously incorrect reply

So what's everyone's thoughts on how the Tour de France is going to pan out this year after seeing most of the Giro?

Im thinking:
1. Contador
2. A. Schleck
3. Menchov
4. Leipheimer
5. Evans
6. Basso
7. Sastre
8. S. Sanchez
9. Kreuziger
10. Pereiro

Gesink and Kreuziger will be thereabouts, top 15 minimum.

Basso will not be riding. Nibali will around there too.

I think Leipheimer will win. I do not rate him. And ex-USPS rider I have contact with, thinks he is the biggest case of "donkey to thoroughbred" in the peloton. Frank Schleck imo would be a worthy recipient of that title tho.

Frank Schleck top 10 also.

Evans will not win, that is fo'sure!

Menchov will go too deep. Will not make the podium.

Unfortunately i agree, just has no where near enough help, Dekker may be the only person with a slight chance of helping him. Mind you he had zero help last year and did very well, Popo was dead set useless.

Stronger field this year, i think it would be an all mighty effort for Cadel to finish in the top 5.

Balls-up by CTT, imo.
They could have had two stages in a row.
Calling thier man back for Sastre was pointless anyway.

Rogers needs to move early in a stage to gain any time it seems.
Which of course is easier said than done - won't get away easy.
But he doesn't have the strength or kick to get away late so may as well try.

Very entertaining stage.

Popo basically lead all of the 237km until 2km till the finish were a fast finishing Sastre flew over the top of him. Carlos looked like he was struggling all race until the heat came on, then he exploded. Menchov looked very strong, countering everything Di Luca threw at him, finished 2nd with Di Luca 3rd.

Levi really struggled today finishing over 3 minutes behind Sastre, had absolutely no legs left in him.

I didn't think i would ever see the day that Lance Armstrong would be a domestique. To see him carry Levi over the last 10km was something to behold.

Rogers rod pretty well finishing in the top 10 i believe

What became of Popo? Well as i said, got over taken by Sastre with 2km left and he just was shaking his head, threw his hands up in disgust and basically threw in the towel. He lost 3 and a half minutes in those last 2km to finish 18th.

That was insane. Carlos is a machine. All the riders agree that that stage was even harder than 2004 TdF Plateau de Beille!

Big call.

Here are some Twitters from some people of note.

CadelOfficial "That young Pauwels is TOO good a team mate!"

CadelOfficial "Ho! This is good racing - glad I am watching it on TV! (Giro final climb)"

CadelOfficial "7h11' in the saddle for the guys at the Giro - A real GT (Grand Tour) riders day..."

lancearmstrong "Ouch, ouch, and more ouch."

lancearmstrong "Tough stage. MayB 1 of the hardest I have ever seen. Relentless climbing and oppressive heat. Levi had a day tough 1 but we tried to ..."

lancearmstrong ".... limit his losses. Hot days like this are always full of surprises. Looking fwd to the rest day then more tough days. Onward."

lancearmstrong "And a helluva ride from Popo. Out there all day. He's one of the toughest guys in the peloton, hands down."

Levi_Leipheimer "Lance and I are discussing the fact that today may have been the hardest day ever!! 2004 TdF Plateau de Beille is up there"

Levi_Leipheimer "I did my best, the others were stronger, plain & simple. Lance saved me minutes, and it was an honor!"

Levi_Leipheimer "Really wished Popo had won, he's pure class. I was disappointed to hear on the radio Sastre passed him:("

mickrogers "That was the hardest, hotest day of my life. 46 degrees (115 f) on the pavement. Got through ok. I need a shower"

mickrogers "I agree with @Levi_Leipheimer, 2004 TdF Plateau de Beille was tough, but today takes the gold medal."

RobbieHunter "All I can say that fish from last night is nothing compared to the way I feel now!8 hours on the bike!longest I ever done!glad its over!"

RobbieHunter "Glad to hear @levi_leipheimer & @lancearmstrong say it was a hard as well!if I had of heard different I might just have stopped racing!"

Levi_Leipheimer "@mickrogers @robbiehunter Its settled then, today is the hardest, it's unanimous"

allandavis27 "I need a cold beer!"

allandavis27 "That was bull you know what today!"

RobbieHunter "Worste part now is that we got a damb long bus transfer!220kms,only get to hotel @22:30.ok its rest tomorrow but come on this is crazy!"

RobbieHunter "O and its in our state of the art 15 year old bus with no damb aircon!! Gotta love it!"

ChristianVDV "OK, some days I am happy to miss the Giro."

Johanbruyneel "Left the hotel this morning at 8am...Just arrived at the next hotel at 10pm. Loooong day at the office. Ready for a day of rest tomorrow."

johanbruyneel "That required some crazy driving today... Will check on the damage tomorrow morning... And curious if I got fined too..."

mickrogers "Just getting to the hotel now. 10.10pm. What an epic day"

lancearmstrong "Long drive to the hotel. Just made it here - long ass day. Laying on my bed. Jeff Buckley on the ipod."

RobbieHunter "@lancearmstrong lucky bastard! We still got an hour to go in our crappy bus!"

They are all in Chronological order. I hope Allan Davis got his beer!! hehe

Menchov answered ever call Di Luca made. Danielo could only get a few seconds at the end. It is down to those two now, the others are too far behind to throw up a challenge.

Armstrong tried something early on in the club, tried to go with Pellazotti the eventual winner but didn't have the legs. Ended up get passed by Menchov, Di Luca, Basso and Gartzelli, came in with the Sastre/Levi group almost 2 minutes behind the winner.

It was beautiful.

Top effort by Di Luca, he was a bit rough that nobody could help him. Basso had the curly Pellizotti up the road, and Garzelli seemed unable or unwillingly to help him. Probably unable as he fell behind for a while before coming back. Levi has gone to rabble after the TT, did he use all his tickets there? Rogers was solid as ever, but he seems like another Australian rider who can't produce the burst to try and take a race on.

He has totally lost the plot
