A Caaarlton mate pointed out to me the phenomena that shall now be known as the "Gift of Calthorpe".

It appears that when David Calthorpe is on your list, magic things can happen.

Behold-
1998 - Essendon make the finals, but aren't quite up to it. They lose Calthorpe and 2 years later ---- voila! ---- instant premiership!
1999 - Brisbane are bundled out of the preliminary final and sent back up north to lick their wounds. They offload Calthorpe and 2 years later --- voila! --- instant premiership!

So we've got the 2003 flag pretty much wrapped up!

I mean first they steal Fitzroy from us and then they unload Fatty Boomba on us. Expect Merret to come out of retirement and play for us

Perhaps that's why he's still looking for a club!
