Why don’t Australians care that we are basically giving away our natural resources?
I would have thought this would be a bigger issue.

I think people do care, but the miners do an ad blitz whenever their profits off of our resources are brought up.

I would have thought this would be a bigger issue.

Both major parties at state and federal level rely too much on donors and the easy fix. Greens do care but unfortunately don't get listened to much in this space.

We need to ban foreign ownership of our mining sector and have proper taxes. The claim they will just go elsewhere for minerals is crap as we have quality, location and certainty of supply unlike other more dangerous and less developed areas.

Because Australians are relatively unsophisticated when it comes down to it, if it's not front and centre in the tabloids that pass for news sources it will be off their radar. And those news sources have a vested interest in working people up about dangerous brown people or men playing women's sport, anything to keep them distracted of the fact they are being robbed blind.

Basically, middle class Australians have had it very good for a very long time. As long as they have jobs, they can afford petrol and their property portfolios keep rising in value, they're fat and happy and don't want to rock the boat. They don't realise how much better society could be if we had more money to support social services and look after the poor.

Their children, on the other hand, are a lot more cynical, knowing they're inheriting a society with massive inequality of asset ownership and the impending cataclysm of climate change. And perhaps it'll take another generation before there will be enough of a public groundswell to take on vested interests like the resources industry, robbing us all to enrich a select few.
