Hey all, good luck for this weekend.

Had Glenn Manton come to my school today, had a chat about relationships and told us his life story.

He is a real good speaker, funny man.

We asked why he retired so soon.

And he said it was Becasue he Had problems with Dennis Pagan, Pagan said that he is a disgrace to his family, and from that moment he Had no respect for Pagan and thats why he retired.

I bought His Book "Dead Bolt" seems a good read, he signed it for me

A shame :-(
He was one of the few "dissenters" I really liked.
I can understand Beaumonts departure, particularly given his comments to Kanaga players re: Pagan during the almighty hiding you gave us in Rnd 22 a few years back.........
But Mants was certainly harshly treated.
He still had something to give at the time, at least for another year or so.

One of my most respected players ever to pull on a Navy Blue jumper. Was never the best player at the club, but he gave 110% every time he stepped out onto the field.

Proudly wore his number on the back of my footy jumper for a few years, and was even lucky enough to get a game worn jumper of his through the club as well.

He tried hard as a player. Shame he can't leave his bitterness behind him. Probably espouses the tenet of "moving on from career disappointments" in the gobbledygook addresses he makes that pass for inspirational speeches. His new-age approach to success was old-age 15 years ago.

Care to elaborate a little. I was really disappointed when this fella left and couldn't understand it. Can you please tell me more about his departure?

We asked why he retired so soon.
I remember when he celebrated his 150th. He said he was looking forward to his 200th. My dad and I looked at each other and said he was being optimistic. As faults go, that one's not so bad.

He was a great clubman, a worthy premiership player, still donates a ton of time and energy to charity, and is really just a great bloke, but he was gawn a year before he retired. His legs couldn't get him to contests and he'd lost confidence in his marking.

I'll always remember that speech he gave after the West Coast game during the 99 finals. It was one of the reasons we pipped Essendon the following week. He'll give anything a go, which you've got to love.

similar story of darren hulme, i spoek to his mother, as she said that denis pagan was rude towards hulme forced him to retire

Again, Pup was gone by then, but you'd hope that Pagan would be professional about these things and not just insult people 'til they go away.

What about the Beaumont comments that were made against the North. I was actually at that game and remember Boomer Harvey celebrating a goal with a slingshot action. It made me very angry. If memory serves correctly it was also the day that Angwin got reported. He was actually playing very well. What was Beaumonts comments???

he did the same at our school. he was selling this piece of garbage for $5.......he had boxes and boxes and boxes full of them :D

Always liked Mants, gave all he had for the jumper. Pity some of the hacks we have had parading aorund in our jumper over the last few years couldnt have taken a leaf. Im looking at you Houlihan.

I think SOS retirement killed Mants, When faced with the 3rd best forward week in week out Mants problems were not shown up. Once we had the exodus in the late 90's of the Dean's Sexton's and then Silvagni and McKay in the early 00's Mants was left with playing above his ability and he got shown up.

Admit "The lets stick it up those ****ing bombers" line the week before the 99 prelim is still a favourite of mine.

I don't like to get personal but you must be a very ignorant supporter.:thumbsd:

Came to my school when i was doing year 12 last year... all i remmeber was he tried to show of his guns as much as possible to the girls... pretty weak:( .

Wasn't entirely a bad guy, and i like him as a footballer. A poor mans Andrew Kellaway IMO

He said to the Kangas player's during that horrible massacre...quote....."how's did you lot ever put up with this bloke".

Manton, Beaumont and Hulme were gone. If Pagan was rude, he was rude but there were too many players at Carlton post 2001 that were hiding behind former glories. If Manton or Hulme or Beaumont had more to give why weren't they picked up by other clubs? (Beaumont did nothing at Hawthorn)

Quite true.

Football aside he has proven to be very spiteful when leaving both clubs which leads me to believe it's more a reflection on him.

Thanks for that:thumbsu:
I still liked the bloke a lot. I thought Manton had some leadership to offer a young team same with Beaumont and Hulme. I think that they could have helped a few players find their feet a little (Davies, Livingston, Sporn etc). I thought giving these guys the Raspberry and Sars and bringing players of a similar quality from different teams (Hawthorn) was a bad move that has cost Carlton a lack of leadership. So be it, that is hind sight now. There is a new team now and a new history to be created.:o

He was a decent servant for our great club.

Played out of his height division but always tried hard.

A reminder that gun talls are very, very hard to come by.

The fact was he lost them what ever way you put it. The highly uncompetitve performances of 2003 told us the players weren't interested playing for him. Even now, in his 5th year we're still running around at 2-7 after winning 7 matches combined in the previous 2 years. Think there's some messages in there.

Funny thing was I'm pretty sure He didn't retire (I might be wrong) but IIRC he was actually delisted and tried to make a comeback by nominating for the national draft? Kind of kills his credibilty really

Also when is retiring at 29 so early?
