I don't think he'd make it as a long term test cricketer, but he has more than earned the right to have a bit of a sustained run at it, particularly in light of the ball tampering suspensions.
Nothing has changed over the course of the home summer.

Its really hard to see how some guys could have been given a chance in front of Maxwell.

It's even more frustrating that failures are replaced by Marshes, sort of on automatic recycle, and excuses are made for their failures amid promises of reinstatement as soon as they "find form".

Didn't want to comment on decisions taken by the previous regime? (Which is not much different to the "new" regime...)

Nah, he was just avoiding the question. I'm not sure why, there's nothing wrong with blaming a predecessor for a * up, everyone in every workplace in the world does this.

Not sure batting Maxwell at 6 or 7 in Saturday night's 1 dayer will help him if his desire is to play test cricket. Will most likely be batting late in the innings and he will most likely will have to play the big shots which some people have been critical of.

Exactly. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Sometimes doesn't even get to bat. Or bowl. Nice to have a built-in scapegoat.

Was told originally he does not make enough centuries (despite scoring more centuries per innings than Travis Head) yet he's unable to play FC cricket and bats at 6 or 7 in ODI's. Seems like an unrealistic goal.

Maxwell has been set up to fail to provide something for the regime to hang its hat on to justify the decisions they have already made. He needs to focus on looking after himself. He will be lost to FC cricket in Aus within 12 months.

Except the 'predecessors' are still there in the form of Hohns and Chappell. He can't come out and bag them, I get the feeling the coach is kept on a shorter leash than in they heyday, particularly after what happened with Lehmann. He will need time to make the team his own.

Common sense would say bat him at 4 and look at run a ball stuff, nothing silly. If still in at 45 over then look at the big shots.

Which aspect of the management of Australian cricket over the last 12 months suggests common sense lives here?

Can Justin Langer/ACB just come out and tell every one what Glenn Maxwell has to do in their opinion to make the test side and then end of story.A little unfair if his performances in the T20/1 day games effect his test selections.4 shield games to go "let him play in all of them for Victoria' and then we can perhaps pass judgement on whether he is suitable for test selection or not.

The old "you need experience" to get a job that gives you experience parody.

Yep.

I get why CA have reservations about Maxwell as a test cricketer, particularly a couple of years ago when he was "the big show" and we had more options available. Guys like Handscomb, Burns, Mitch Marsh who are the same age or younger have played a lot more FC cricket. Not all his fault given he has played 144 ODI/T20I matches which overlap with Shield and County seasons. He's very attacking (strikes at 73 in FC cricket) and his record is good without being outstanding (averages 41, 7 100s and 21 50s) and he does play some unorthodox strokes. Didn't do himself any favours when first called up to the test side either.

But in his (just his, not going to highlight that there's no queue of guys doing any better) favour:

- in his first test (2nd in series) he batted at #8
- in his second (4th in series) he batted at #7 in the first innings then opened in the 2nd
- in his third 18 months later (2nd in series) he batted at #3 (#4 with a nightwatchman in the first innings)
- in his fourth and fifth (3rd and 4th in series) he batted at #6 and made 100 and then a second innings top score 45
- in his 6th and 7th be batted at #6 then #5 and made 23, 14, 38, 25* then dropped

He's batted in 14 innings in 7 different positions in the order. And all of his tests have been in India/UAE/Bangladesh. WTF? Compare that to someone like Bancroft or Harris who started their careers with a 4/5 test series, at home, batting in the one spot. Mitch Marsh like him or lump him has batted 39 of 53 innings at #6. What really surprises me is that a hard fought 100 in India followed by a second innings top score 45 in the next test bought such little currency with the selectors. Scored more runs in two tests than Handscomb or either Marsh managed in 4 yet two tests later he's goneski and those 3 guys all played against India. And are all out for SL. And Maxwell isn't in.

"The big show" is a totally unlooked for label that has weighed him down for years, thanks to Wade.

Playing at 7 tomorrow.
Are people still saying Wade was bitter when he gave Maxy that nickname?
