Glenn Maxwell and his future

They are competing for completely different people. Big Bash is aimed at families and kids, UFC definitely not...

There would likely still be some crossover. People can and do like multiple sports. I'm sure the BBL crowd number on the day would have been affected. It's just poor event planning, is all.
That and how many would be happy the main draw doesn’t even fight?

I don't think anyone was happy with that, but given the price of tickets and how far ahead they were sold out, I doubt there were many (if any) who found out that info on the day of the event and were like "Oh well, that's it, bin the ticket, I won't go now".

Of course they’d go, it’s just more next time you’d reconsider

But if they were worried about every event in the precinct they’ll spend months trying to do the fixture, did they stop using the MCG for the duration of the Aus open?

Potential XI:

Warner
Finch
Smith
S Marsh
Maxwell
Stoinis
Carey

Cummins
Starc
Zampa
Hazlewood

Assuming Smith is fit for the WC I can't see Maxwell coming in any higher than 5th and more likely 6th or 7th. Likely that the selectors will bat Stoinis ahead of him, possibly Mitch Marsh if he plays. If Smith misses you would move Shaun Marsh up to #3 which gives more scope for Maxwell to be #4 or #5.

Our 2007 WC winning side had Clarke at 6 and Hussey at 7 so sometimes good batsmen don't get to bat high in the order.

Huss was a specialist down the order. He was put at 6/7 as he had such a good ability to accelerate but also play the measured game. Also , he was never what you'd call mecurial.

Well, CA would have to be completely ignorant and stupid to disregard any big-drawing event running at the same time in the same area as a BBL fixture.

The event this past weekend at Rod Laver Arena (which drew 15,238 fans) was completely sold out within a few hours of going on sale, and would likely have sold more tickets if they had ran a larger venue as they did last time in Melbourne.
It is small fry for Melbourne. Big Bash not going to adjust their own schedule because 5 or 6 people that may have gone to Big Bash went to UFC instead. I was interested it in myself but still it barely got a ripple of sporting space in newspaper. It is still a niche market here no matter what you think. If the event at Marvel Stadium and pricing more realistic it might change in future. For weekend though, it barely relevant to BBL fixture.

Hussey was good enough to bat anywhere in the order. Batted 27 innings at 4, 42 at 5, 63 at 6 and 21 at 7. Plus two innings opening at at #3. His ability to go big from ball one and the strength of our top order was the reason he ended up down at 6/7. 16 times he finished with a strike over 150 and in 8 of those innings he was not out. Had remarkable knack of getting the red dot while accelerating the run rate.

Maxwell is good but he is he a better opener than Finch and Warner? A better 3 or 4 than Smith and Shaun Marsh? He's competing with Stoinis/M Marsh/Head/whoever else for a middle order spot. The fact he can go big early and hit 20 off 10 makes him an attractive 6/7. He probably doesn't like it but it's a team game and CA punting Faulkner and batting Coulter-Nile when he plays at 8/9 work against him.

Not the first time he's got out this BBL with a casual hoik down the leg side.

Yup that's the frustrating thing for me....its not the first time he has been out to this flick shot off his hip...also it was a plan by the renegades and Maxwell fell for it.....stupid dumb batting

Maxwell deserves to be in our world cup squad batting at 7...it is atm where he deserves to be. Langer is justified in batting him in that position and using him as a floater... I have no confidence that Maxwell can bat in the top 5 without throwing away his wicket

Lets just hope Maxwell can learn from this ...start to score some runs.. Not outs down the order and force himself up the order because he has the talent to win games off his own bat.

Just so frustrating

His most frequent appearances in odi cricket have been at 5 (32 innings) where he averages 34, and has a strike rate of only 122....
I think he can handle it.

Maxwell’s public mention of the ‘responsibility’ for the result falling on the openers was a bit bizarre.

This doesnt excuse the inexplicable meltdown that followed, but I actually agree with the logic of his comment.

The run rate required was less than seven and a half when the openers started. It was nearly 8 when they were separated. They had long enough to at least lower it a bit. If you apply the fabled Warne logic of adding two wickets to the score with two new batsmen at the crease, at 0-90 or whatever they were, there was still a faint chance they could blow it.

As I said, the rest of the batsmen had no excuse to fail so miserably though.

It was Stoinis and Dunk's fault for only getting off to 0/93 from 13 overs.

Yep, bloody Stoinis and Dunk were bloody useless .......

Now what did Captain Maxwell contribute ?.

Glen, stop blaming everyone else, ........ you are a figjam extraordinaire.

Can't anybody acknowledge that both share the blame? After 13 overs the Stars probably should have been under a run a ball, but conversely they should have still won in that situation.

Yeah sure they are both to blame. About 5% of it should go on the openers because they could have batted with a tad more urgency and 95% on the clowns that came in afterwards.

That's basically it in a nutshell. The openers should have had it at evens by that stage (Stoinis' blocking seemed more theatrical than methodical) but after Stoinis went out one of Dunk, Handscomb, Maxwell, Maddinson, Gotch or Bravo should have got them home. As a collective they should have pissed it in. Maxy is right but the task that was left was hardly insurmountable.

Just s**t cricket all round (and good defence from the Renegades).

The previous game at Marvel showed it was easy batting against the new ball as the Renegades are very good with the older ball. But a run a ball in the powerplay is poor any time!

Besides, if the openers can bat 12 overs when batting is at his easiest and not keep up with the run rate required, why is it supposed to be so easy for incoming batsmen with less time and tougher conditions to suddenly go quicker?

They left that star studded middle order the gigantic task of scoring 53 off 42 balls, interstate bastards!

I reckon anything around 50 off the last 30 balls should be doable by any side if they have wickets in hand. Should have been a doddle even after the first 3 wickets fell.

Don't worry. They'll only have the rest of their lives to reflect on it
