Another good innings in the shortest form of the game, think that by the end of the summer that this young man on the rise will certainly be making waves into the national T20 side very shortly.

Can hit a long ball, can bowl some handy offies, and is a very good fielder, excellen actually.

Hopefully his Big Bash can take off and he can get a gig in the National side later on in the season.

One to watch

Been a real surprise packet. If his bowling can improve a touch more he'll get places I would think.

'Good' innings?

I caught most of it at the pub and it was atrocious...swing and a miss most balls, throwing his head back, lucky top edges and mishits not going to fielders...

Thought the same of him when he made runs against us in the Sheffield Shield...made 70% of his runs through the slips I reckon.

Not convinced at all by what I've seen.

Pretty harsh. He is a very clean hitter of the ball (one of the best in domestic cricket IMO) when he does cream one.

All in all a pretty exciting prospect if his spin bowling continues to improve, he consistently makes runs (which he has been doing lately) and the Victorian coaching staff continue to give him opportunities (ie. move up the batting order in one and four dayers).

Fair enough, I'm just judging him by what I've seen. The innings he and Buchanan played last night made me cry a little into my beer, tossing the head back and playing mindlessly at each ball. Shocking to watch...hopefully I can catch him in good nick soon.

Actually like his bowling, so he seems to have lots going for him in the talent stakes. :thumbsu:

I also have very high hopes for him and expect he'll be playing for Australia sooner rather than later, if he continues to improve, but I agree that he'd want to improve a lot on what he showed last night (batting wise. His bowling and fielding were fine to excellent).
A lot of that batting was just pure slogging and he could easily have gone out much earlier. Having said that, when he does get on to it, the crack off the bat sounds incredible and the ball just goes and he has made a lot of scores in all forms lately. I'm hoping that last night he was just a bit obsessed with the short boundaries, square of the wicket and that he has more shots than the slog to "cow corner" he played so often in that innings. That magnificent drive straight down the ground shows that he does at least have one other area, but hopefully he has a few more, as there isn't a great future in swiping across the line of the ball all innings. (Esp he wants to play test cricket).
If he finds/has other areas to hit it to and realises that he doesn't have to swing for the fences, in order to to carry the fence, he will become a real "weapon".
If I was selecting the Aussie team I'd have a real eye on him to fill the spot Dussey does in the T20 team, when he's finished there, as Maxwell looks to be at least as good with the ball and in the field and hits a big ball like Hussey. Maxwell could be the ideal one to replace him. (If they both have good Big Bash's, though, they could both be in there by the end of the summer, as those who bat bowl and field well are obviously very valuable.) :thumbsu:

I don't see him anywhere near the test team unless he pulls his finger out. Thought he was pretty average on Sunday, even though he hit the 40, he didn't strike it clean often. Plus he seems to get starts, like Watson and never go on.

Lol he never goes on with his starts.. Batting at 6 or 8 as opposed to opening like Watson. You pretty much proved to me you have no idea. Congrats
15 innings, 1 not out, 1 century, 6 50's. That is not going on with starts. It wasn't like the Tail got out on him, he got out on the tail.

Just looking at his scores over 50 this season:

92 vs NSW, was last out, had a partnership of 47 with Herrick for the last wicket.

61 and 72 vs WA, was the ninth wicket in the second innings, going for quick runs to set a target for WA. First innings he was eighth out.

67 against Queensland, was going the tonk for a declaration.

So, the argument that he doesn't go on with it isn't quite accurate, as he generally hasn't had the time when he's set to build a big score. However, this season at least he's scored all his runs at no 7 and below - he's generally struggled when promoted up the order. Also, all these scores have come on fairly flat tracks against average bowling attacks, he hasn't done too much on livelier tracks like Bellreive and the Gabba.

He's definitely a prospect for the future and could fit quite comfortably at number 6 in a test side in the future. However, if you were to bring him in now, the only way you could probably do it was if you had a keeper capable of batting at 6 (Prior style) who's dependable with the bat so Maxwell could bat at 7. It's not an easy thing to do, evenfor the best (there was always the talk of batting Gilchrist at 6 for extended periods of time so you could play 3 fast bowlers and 2 spinners, but it never eventuated).

I think he's worth looknig at for the short format of the game but if were looknig at a test batsman we want to see the runs coming in the top 6.

He's been good in FC this year but has rarely been the batsman that hurt the opposition, we would like to see him do that before making the jump.

Ideally he'd be a test number 7. But that is very much only if a Wade or a Paine can justify batting in the top 6. They'd both need to improve their batting for that to happen.

But I can't see that happening soon.

International T20 is definitely on the horizon though. Perhaps ODI's too if the short stuff goes well.

I never mentioned him as a test player but simply as a T20 player/ODI player..

Could he be competing with Steve Smith as that 'finisher/spinning option'?
