It is understood Glenn Roeder has resigned as Newcastle boss after reaching the point of no return.

The 51-year-old reportedly parted company with the club on Sunday after 15 months in charge at St James' Park including his spell as caretaker.

He made his decision in the wake of Saturday's dismal 2-0 home defeat by Blackburn which ended the Magpies' faint hopes of claiming the Intertoto Cup route into Europe for the second successive season.

The club are yet to confirm Roeder's departure, although are expected to do so within hours.

Rumours that he had been summoned to an emergency board meeting had been circulating throughout the day, with some suggesting he had been sacked.

Roeder was in defiant mood after Saturday's game, which extended his side's run with a Barclays Premiership goal at St James' to five games - their worst return since 1951 - and a staggering seven hours and 51 minutes.

He said: "I am very much the same person who was here last year who had a fantastic finish to the season.

"I have not changed as a person. Of course I understand, 100% understand where the fans are coming from.

"They want a winning Newcastle team and I also want a winning Newcastle team.

"At the moment, we have not been winning and I understand their frustration.

"To win matches, you need to score goals and we have not done that for four, five, six weeks now, and that has cost us greatly.

"I do understand their feelings."

His change of heart sparks yet another search for the man to bring success back to Tyneside for the first time since they lifted the Fairs Cup in 1969, with their last domestic success coming in the FA Cup 14 years earlier.

Roeder's departure comes at the end of a week which has seen frenzied speculation about his position and the availability of Sam Allardyce.

However, chairman Freddy Shepherd had earlier insisted he had never spoken to Allardyce, who turned the job down before Graeme Souness was appointed in 2004, about the matter.

He told the Sunday Sun: "I have never spoken to Sam Allardyce. I don't know where all this is coming from."

Shepherd, who has also dismissed suggestions that former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson could be heading for Tyneside, will now start the process of looking for the sixth manager of his reign and the fifth he will have appointed.

He fought to be allowed to give Roeder the job last summer, a battle which has since resulted in a change to the Premier League's rules, despite the fact he did not have the necessary UEFA Pro Licence.

Roeder won his chance after inheriting Graeme Souness' dispirited side and dragging it into seventh place at the end of last season with a return of 10 wins and two draws in 15 league games.

Despite being linked with several bigger names - he insisted he would not consider Allardyce again after his earlier refusal - Shepherd went with the groundswell and handed the former West Ham manager, who had been working as his Academy manager, his chance.

But Roeder was hamstrung even before he began in earnest by the knee injury £17million striker Michael Owen picked up during England's World Cup finals campaign, and injury woe was to become a familiar theme at St James' as 12 bouts of major surgery robbed the manager of key players for extended periods.

In addition, a relative shortage of cash following Souness' £50million spending spree limited the club's recruitment plans both during the summer and in January with Obafemi Martins and Damien Duff accounting for the manager's entire £15million kitty as Mark Viduka and Robert Huth among others getting away.

On the pitch, performances were patchy, although results in Europe were good until the Magpies squandered a 4-2 first leg lead in Alkmaar to miss out on a place in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

By that point, they had been dumped out of the Carling Cup by eventual winners Chelsea and exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle when Coca-Cola Championship Birmingham inflicted a hugely embarrassing 5-1 third round replay defeat on them on Tyneside.

Newcastle fared reasonably well against the top four, defeating Liverpool and drawing with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal at St James'.

However, home defeats by Fulham, Bolton, Sheffield United, Manchester City and Blackburn left the fans in militant mood.

Much of their anger yesterday evening was directed at Shepherd, who earlier in the season fought off takeover proposals from the Belgravia Group and the Polygon-backed St James' Park Group.

But for the first time, they also turned on Roeder, and it is he who has now fallen on his sword.

To be honest it was always coming.

I'm a bit disappointed in the club, as I think he should have been given next season to prove himself.

Considering where we WERE when he took over, we were headed for relegation, but we won something like 11 out of our last 15 games last season when he took over.

This season, we knew it was going to be tough, especially after the injury to Owen. But then the injuries kept on coming and coming and we've really been playing all year with just one striker, with Sibierski playing up there even though he is a midfielder.

Even though we have been disappointing this year, considering all of our injuries he hasnt done BADLY he just hasnt done well. The most disappointing thing for me is our recent performances, they have been bad even when we have had minimal injuries.

Inevitable. Truly a awful coach. Should never have gotten the job in the first place.

Welcome to Newcastle Sam Allardyce. For once a good apppointment

No way is it a good appointment. In fact, I'd be pretty annoyed if we got Allardyce as boss.

No doubt he's a good manager, but he plays a very similar style to Roeder, which clearly doesnt suit Newcastle.

He's also already turned us down twice, so **** him.

He will get the players in to play his style not try to play his style with players that are defensively woeful.

Thats hardly Roeders fault though.

He had to play with the squad he was given, that squad already consisted of Bramble, Carr and Babayaro. All of which are hopeless.

The thing with good defenders, is that they are a lot harder to buy than any other position, because the managers are normally not willing to let them go.

Hiddink anyone?

Honestly, if he wants a challenge with great reward/potential then this is a fantastic oppurtunity.

firstly, already a decent compliment of world class players. squad was decimated by injuries this season but guys like Martins, Owen, Duff (imo), Parker and Given are all very good quality.

and guys like Milner, Dyer and a couple of your young defenders have also looked the goods.

then there's the money. like the chairman or not he's always prepared to give the manager money to spend. which at the very least means his heart is in the right place. or there's the takeover, which has been rumoured for a while (and would be more likely with the appointment of Hiddink, which would give Fat Freddy like Deadly Doug a nice appointment to leave with) and would allow Hiddink to build a really good squad and fast. challenging for honours within a couple of years? who knows?

then there's the size of the club/fans.

fantastic oppurtunity for whoever is appointed.

best of luck to them.

I'd love to see Hiddink but I doubt that will happen.

Too much work hence why Hiddink wouldnt go. I agree that they have a good batch of about 6-7 players but they really do have to spend big on defence this season if there to turn the form around.

I don't think you necessarily have to spend big on defence to get good defenders.

Campbell (if reports are correct) shouldn't cost too much, nor should a serviceable RB or LB.

I guess it depends how much they're willing to spend and what type of player they're looking for.

Surely theyll be signing Distin. Id partner him up with Brown. Left back id get Baines if Wigan go down and for Right back id get Luke Young.

Young - 2 mill
Distin - Free
Brown - 6 mill
Baines - 5 mill

Is that cheap enough ;)

Wanted: A player that will get injured in their first game and never play for us again.

in terms of cheap defenders that may or may not be quality, you must look at the teams going down.

(probable teams relegated)

do Watford, Charlton and Wigan have any decent defenders?

I can think of one, without thinking, that being Luke Young. (Villa's target, hands off)

2-3 mil, good RB, I think he's young. easily affordable, one area solved. + the player is proven (to an extent) in the premiership.

more luxurious players could be attained for other positions, a solid RB after having to put up with Carr for however long it's been should be the priority.

But seriously, I reckon it depends on who goes down.

From Wigan Baines would be a good buy, as would Ryan Taylor.

From Charlton Luke Young would be the only one I would be half interested in.

From Watford theres no-one.

West Ham perhaps only Lucas Neill but I dont really want him.

Another option is Curtis Davies from West Brom - if they dont come up.

They're all good players, from what I've seen and heard/read.

Baines is/was in the England squad recently was he not? not necessary a reflection of true quality but he is a good defender from what I've seen, comprising several favourable assets.

Baines and Young wouldn't be the worst buys and would at least sure up the seemingly pathetic options you currently have on both the left and right sides of defence.

Emre's pretty good as well, I forgot him before.

And one of my personal players, who I enjoy watching and subsequently like is N'Zogbia but unfortunately he always seems to be injured. fair talent though.

even with two additions, your first choice team

Owen Martins
Duff Parker Emre Milner
Baines ?? ?? Young (potential Villa target, hands off)
Given

with guys like Solano and N'Zogbia who should probably start ahead of Duff, on the bench.

not sure who your best central defenders are (Oneknobhu and Bramble I presume, although Ramage and Taylor impressive, as was that guy that Dyertribe did that avatar about, his name sounds like Edgar Davids? maybe the younger guys should be first choice.... I don't know)

either way, that side, minus the central defenders is outside the Top 4, and arguably Tottenham the best on paper. teams like Villa may get near that but it's a platform to build something potentially special on and world class managers should/probably will see that. (assuming Roeder has indeed resigned/been sacked)

Disappointed in the club for once again taking the easy option.

When you look at Roeder's tenure he did a fantastic job given the circumstances.

Inherited a wasteland from Souness and a non-existent back four, then in his first full season in charge he endures an injury run that would put an SS Division to shame.

- No Owen or Ameobi for the duration of the campaign,
- Given injured for extended periods,
- Emre, Parker, Duff, N'Zogbia and Dyer always battling soft tissue problems,
- Recurring injuries to Carr, Babayaro, Moore and Bramble - who are ordinary to awful anyway - meaning we had a different back four practically every game.

What more could anyone else do?

Rather than being bagged - as far as the old West Ham chestnut goes Pards and Curbs are doing worse than he did at the Hammers with a much much stronger squad - he should be applauded for having the balls to take such a poisoned chalice on and for doing as well as he did.

Confirmed by the club now... FFS is looking to appoint his 6th manager in the time he has been chairman.
