In the off season thread I asked Stiffy_18 if he would give his thoughts on the Sacto roster and what he would do as GM. I thought it was a pretty decent idea, and why not open it to everyone. Most of us watch a fair few of our supported teams games, and have a cursory knowledge of the salaries on board and what not.

Critique your own teams roster, who should be trade bait, who should you build around, what guys should you target trade wise. What impact do you think new coaches will have, what offensive/defensive styles will they bring, how will the current guys adapt, or should you be looking to move some on to get a better system fit. Blow it up or give it one more go? Does your star need an offsider to take the pressure off? Any older free agents you think could have an impact on your squad for a (hopefully) lengthy playoff run next season?
The whole shebang fellas

For the Bulls.

Trade Boozer to Brooklyn for Humphries and 1st rounder of this years draft
Let Nate and Marco walk.
Draft a backup SG/SF and Center. Pope and Dieng would be good.
Bring in Korver or Barnes

Rose - Hinrich - Teague
Deng - Pope
Butler - Barnes/Korver
Gibson - Humphries - Thomas
Noah - Dieng

Let Deng Expire so we can try and get Lebron or Melo or Wade. If none of them come next summer. Resign Deng.

What is your fascination with Wade? He's struggling to stay healthy now and he'll be another year older, I'd prefer to keep Deng.

Also we won't get Melo or LeBron and there's not a chance in hell we get a first round pick for Boozer.

I want Nate to return, love to see some small ball.

Nate
Rose
Butler
Deng
Noah

I've got high hopes for Mirotic as well.

I'll just chuck Stiffy's response in here

Extend Cousins and re-sign Evans. Hire a defensive minded coach. Would love JVG or McMillan but would be OK with Mike Malone who comes with great reputation and ability to to get through to players.

I would get a good solid sized combo guard to start next to Tyreke. Someone who is a good defender, can guard SGs and PGs and can play off the ball and shoot 3s at good percentage to provide spacing. Probably my main man target for this role would be Jarret Jack. I might consider drafting CJ McCollum if I can't get a good trade for pick 7.

Get myself a freaking SF that can defend and shoot the 3 to provide more spacing. Either trade or FA. Not a great deal of FAs out there but a solid stop gap solution could be Dorrell Wright if I can't get something better.

Get a shot blocker who will defend the paint, rebound strongly, can play PF and C (ie can guard both positions). If I can't get one via trade, I would strongly consider signing Dalembert for 1-2 years until I find my role player.

Trade chips
Thornton, Jimmer, Salmons (expiring deal), pick 7, Thomas, JT or Patterson depending on who my shot blocker is and everyone else not named Cousins and Evans.

I would even consider taking on Marions contract and pick 13 if that helps me fill any of my needs. The rest of the bench I am filling out with good defensive role players that provide some spacing with 3pt shooting from wing positions and some size, defence and decent offence from the big guys. I did something similar in the other thread and ended up with a decent team what would push for play offs.

I liked the Cousins-Dalembert-Thompson front court rotation during Cousins' first year and I would like to recreate that again with a shot blocker. I also liked the Evans-Udrih-Thornton trio but would have liked to get an upgrade there somehow. At SF I am ideally looking for a 3rd scoring option who is a strong defender and can get his points without needing to dominate the ball. If I can't find that Wright would do for now. It might take 2 years but it would be the team that will contend under a good coach who can establish a defensive presence and offensive hierarchy. None of this small league everyone gets a shot crap that we have been running the last 2-3 years.

From a Bulls perspective its interesting. Word is Nate will probably go, and tbh we can't really afford to keep him. Also having Kirk, Rose, Nate and Teague on the roster is just point guard overkill. I know Kirk can spell in at the 2 guard, and we could look at other small ball lineups, but Nate and Rose on court together won't work at all, both are too ball dominant.

Rip is obviously gone, so Jimmy slots into some 2 guard minutes and splits with Bellinelli off the bench for mine. I wasn't enthusiastic about his signing, but boy did he prove me wrong. Off the bench leading the second unit is probably his best role for us going forward if we can afford him.

Boozer I'm unsure on. If we can move him we have to look into it, but it leaves us light on in the frontcourt. The other point of view is that our first choice squad has not got a decent run together in 2 seasons, so who knows what could happen if you keep the core together. Amnesty isnt an option this season as it doesnt get us under the cap enough to matter anyway. Taj (if fit) can slot into a starting spot if needed, he picked up his form in the playoffs after a sub par (albeit injury affected) year. Honestly tho, we cant really afford to keep both after this season, and seeing as Taj makes ha;f the money it would appear that Carlos will be the one to go in the future.

Backup centre is a key need for us, especially with all the work Jo has had to do. We need someone to spell him for 10-15 and cut his minutes down.

Absolutely must keep Deng. Unless we get a crazy offer I keep him, if we can get him on a 4/40 type deal, but we'll have to move Carlos next season to keep him you feel/

Last I heard Mirotic was another year away.

Draft wise i'm not sure what we do. Taking a big likely won't help immediately, so its possible we look to stash our pick on a Euro or trade out of the first round. Otherwise a 2 guard or shooter are our biggest needs outside of a backup centre. If we get a slider at 20 tho... who knows.

Free agency wise, we are probably looking at vet mins again. We have the mini-MLE available, but can't sign and trade if he takes us over the apron.
We currently have cap holds totaling 73 mill or thereabouts on 9 players, which becomes 8 if we buy out Rip for 1 mill prior to July 10. So 4 roster spots to fill, with just the mini MLE and Korver exception to play with. We do hold bird rights on Nate, Marco and Nazr, so we could theoretically use that to re-sign them, altho a mini MLE combination of 3 is probably the more likely scenario.

Rose/Teague/Kirk
Jimmy/Marco
Lu/Jimmy
Booze/Taj
Noah/ backup

Jimmy cloning in full effect :D

As Dez pointed out, we can slot into various small ball lineups using Deng at the 4 in spells with Taj or Jo at the 5

Trade Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton and our 1st rounder for CP3.
Sign either Chris Kaman or Samuel Dalembert to replace Tyson.

Thats just off the top of my head for starters

I doubt the Clips do that personally. Maybe you could work him into a deal for say Bledsoe, if you took back money, but any deal would likely need to include Jordan... ugh.

Golden State, Denver or Miami could use him, but don't really have any chips you'd want that they'd be willing to part with, and Denver would want to package a McGee or something in to it.

oh i know it wont happen, just what i would try and do.
There are some decent FA's out there that fill roles. I like Tony Allen, would be good for us. Jennings a FA, maybe do a package with them and get Dalembert involved. Not sure

Nate goes, Beli stays. Can't stand Boozer but I think he has to stay unless we get another quality big from somewhere. If we can get Robinson I'd be more than happy to amnesty Boozer on the spot, then wait patiently for Mirotic.

I know pretty much nothing about this draft apart that it apparently sucks. Either grab a slider or a big who can rebound/defend.

Rose/Kirk/Teague
Butler/Beli/Kirk
Deng/Butler
Boozer/Taj
Noah/Another big

Have no interest in watching Korver or Brewer run around out there for us again. Rose needs two way players next to him.

As GM I'd beg Thibs not to run our players into the ground during the long season. We've got depth, use it.

Search the league for a developed big, look at teams willing to cut salary, trade #10 if the right deal comes up. Asik and McGee at the top of the list. If a deal can't be found, my big board on who we could realistically draft at 10 would be Shabbaz, McCollum, Zeller, Caldwell-Pope. Target a big and bench scoring in F.A. Pekovic or Splitter is the only real option for a big man. Go after guys like Copeland, Henderson, Clark or Landry to add to our bench

Even though I think Shabazz is a total tosser, he would be perfect at Portland. A scorer off the bench is exactly what you need

If I was the Spurs GM for a day?

I wouldn't touch shit. I'd only **** it up! :D

I would however re-sign Pop for the next 25 years. ;)

Ok seeming as though we don't have a vast array of supporters and Stiffy has done our Kings I'm going to attempt to be Utah's GM for a day.

So here are the salaries http://hoopshype.com/salaries/utah.htm (Looking at that who the **** is Maurice Williams.... oh.... That's Mo Williams... haha Maurice....)

Sign and Trade Big Al to Milwaukee for Jennings

Sign and Trade Millsap to PHX for M.Gortat

Re-sign Mo Williams to smaller contract and have him come off the bench as 6th Man.

Sign UFA J.J. Reddick, Leonardo Barbosa, Johan Petro

Draft Mason Plumlee

PG: Brandon Jennings, Mo Williams
SG: J.J. Reddick, Alec Burks, Leonardo Barbosa
SF: Gordon Haywood, Marvin Williams, Jeremy Evans
PF: Derrick Favors, Dejuan Blair, Mason Plumlee
C: Enes Kanter, M.Gortat, J.Petro

I'm taking a risk with signing Jennings but with this young squad I think they can go places. Karl Malone working with Kanter and Favors who now get more minutes starting will do wonders for their development. Gortat and Mo.Williams are part of a solid second group which can bring some much need scoring off the bench. This team probably wont play finals next year but with the right tutelage should be in contention the year after.

Thoughts ?

Intriguing. I like shifting Mo to the 6th man, but ultimately I think that the sign and trades are going to be dictated by who wants to go where, and I don't see BJ choosing Utah, nor do I see Millsap going to Milwaukee.

JJ is worth a look by the Jazz who are screaming out for guards, but i wonder if he is the best fit for the squad they have. Although if they choose to not re-sign Randy Foye he'd prob slot into a starting spot. I feel that JJ is probably best used as a 6th man tho, and whether he chooses to go to the Jazz or is looking for a championship contender at this stage of his career.

But damn do they have some cap space to play with  And plenty of holes to fill....

Calderon could be worth a look as a bench option if they miss out on the marquee guys. Bellinelli would probably fit the squad pretty well too.

Other options could be - Tyreke, Gary Neal and maybe (ugh) Kevin Martin (please god no)

My First Plan. Was for if the Bulls go down the 2014 free agency route. Now if they weren't doing that this would be my plan

Still Trading to Boozer off to Brooklyn for Humprhies. Good Deal for Brookyln and The Bulls. Hump is off the books at the end of next season. Right in time for Mirotic. Also think we can get Brooklyn first out of it,

Try and find a taker for Hinrich

Resign Marco and Nate
Draft Dieng or Another C and Pope

Rose - Nate - Teague
Butler - Marco
Deng - Pope
Gibson - Hump - Thomas
Noah - Dieng

A good thing with that squad is we have a great bench and can also play small ball with
Rose
Nate/Marco
Butler
Deng
Noah

Miami has major major salary cap problems after next season. It will be virtually impossible for Miami to keep LBJ, Wade and Bosh together after the 2014 season.
It's clear that the teams that have done well this year have had a strong interior presence. Indiana, SA, Memphis etc. Miami has been annihilated by Indiana in the pain this series, only the brilliance of LBJ is keeping them in it.

As Miami i'd make a move now in order to try and at least keep Wade and LBJ here. It will be hard to trade Wade given his salary and declining play. Bosh would unfortunately be the sacrificial lamb.

Cleveland prob doesn't even want to talk to Miami given LBJ's switch but i'd hope they'd let their emotions stay out of it.

Miami gives up Chris Bosh + Miami's 1st rounder

Cleveland gives up: Anderson Varejao, Tristan Thompson, CJ Miles and the #19th pick

Miami gets some luxury cap relief, they get a better inside presence.
Cleveland gets an All Star forward that can score. Their current front court is majorly lacking scoring power. It gives them a core of Irving + Bosh + #1 pick to work around. If they want to they can package the #1 pick and Dion Waiters to go and get another player (Cousins etc).

Good point... altho Lebron has an ETO after this season right?

I was kicking the idea of a Bosh-Chandler and switching parts trade in my head, there's no way in the world either team would pull the trigger tho.

They have 85 mill on the books next season, altho Mike Miller will sure be amnestyed

LBJ has an opt-out after the 2014 season, i think Wade and Bosh do too.

Bosh def suits their "small ball" system and Anderson Varejao has injury concerns but i think they do need to fix their interior problems. Kevin Love would be a great get but i dont think the new Timberwolves GM would be too keen to trade him.

Multiple sources say Cousins has committed to the Kings and doesn't want a trade (so count him out)

On the other end Cleveland is giving up too much IMO but not by much, lose Cleveland's 19th pick and that should just about do it. Let's not forget Miami's 1st rounder will probably be useless for a good 3-4 years.
