I don't get down to Geelong all that much these days but do we have a Vibrant cultural and arts precinct now?

Kinda yeah - Little Malop Street (not the mall section, but the next strip which is blocked to cars) is a thriving area with a variety of restaurants and eateries, a great little cake shop that you need to make a reservation for especially if you are wanting to show up at 10pm, plus at least one wine bar, a cocktail bar etc

It's gone from being an area you would avoid (especially after dark) to a place that is lively & great to walk through (at least until the venues close).

I've heard the mall has been turned into a wildlife hunting preserve.

Kardinia Park and Geelong Performing Arts Centre in line for dual project funding worth $230m

THE Andrews Government has revealed it will complete two major infrastructure projects in Geelong, if it is re-elected in November.

Labor has committed to the $102 million fifth and final stage of the Kardinia Park Stadium redevelopment, which will increase the venue’s capacity to 40,000.

In a double-pronged election pledge, Labor has also revealed it would spend $128 million on the third and final stage of the modernisation of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

Both initiatives are contingent on Labor being returned for a second term at the November 24 State Election.

Premier Daniel Andrews said his party would deliver the finishing touches to the city’s vibrant arts and cultural precinct and its premier sporting venue.

“We’ll finish the job we’ve started — transforming GPAC and Kardinia Park into the best regional facilities in Australia, delivering jobs, tourism and top-level sports and events to Geelong.”

The election promises come on the back of the Government’s allocation of $153.2 million towards Geelong’s City Deal in its 2018-19 Budget.

Labor has stated that work on the northern stand end of Kardinia Park would start after the venue hosts World T20 cricket matches in late 2020.

Construction would not finish on the substantial build until 2022.

The project would create:

A NEW 14,000 capacity two-tier northern stand to replace the ageing Ford Stand and Ablett Terrace;

NEW Geelong Cricket Club social rooms and cricket facilities;

NEW unisex change rooms and facilities to allow more professional women’s sport; and,

NEW media and loading facilities, providing better access for drop-in pitches and major concerts.

The final stage of GPAC’s transformation would also start in 2020.

It would provide a 500-seat drama theatre, a new 250-seat courtyard theatre, a new black box theatre, an outdoor atrium, more dining options and an upgraded box office.

The $128 million project would cover around two-thirds of the site, with most of the work focusing on the Little Malop St side of the building.

Construction would stretch into 2023. Labor said it would support about 600 construction jobs and more than 300 ongoing local jobs in the tourism and service industries.

The commitment comes as work continues on the stage two Ryrie St redevelopment.

The $38.5 million project is creating a new Ryrie St entrance, universal access to The Playhouse, new rehearsal and dance studios, a new foyer and bar areas.

That work is expected to be completed in mid-2019.

Gees the ford stand and ablett terrace aint even that old. What a waste of money to tear it down and start again.

Hopefully this post works.

Rumours that Club is strongly pushing for a GMHBA home final if we play an interstate side. Seems fair to me, but if we play Sydney it should be at the MCG (will be a 60k crowd, plus they play the ground well).

I would rather play those teams at the mcg for finals if we could play victorian teams at geelong.

IF this goes thru... wow...

The AFL wont like it. Makes it even harder to keep big drawning teams and games out of KP. Capacity of 40k.... would make shit very real at AFL house.

Good for the club, good for the region and the multi purpose use of the venue for both sexes and types of sports to be played at the precinct.

And most importantly to the GFC, it appears as thought with the 105 million to get it done pledged but the Government, GFC does not have to make up the shirt fall to build it which should help our bottom line massively.

Now... about getting back into the top 4....

Oh fairy nuts, do you mean the bit where the Eureka is? (Is that still going?) Or the old courthouse?
I remember Johnson Park was a dead set no go zone at night, all I remember of GPAC was in primary school where they used to make us go watch lame plays. Was gay as.

Definately some rats there that need shooting.

How good would it be if the hawks have to play games down here. The sooking would be off the charts.

The Eureka building is still there but Darryn Lyons closed it as a venue a few months ago - main reason for closing was the size of the venue was ultimately too big for what is actually working around that area now days. If someone wanted to take over that building & divide it into small ventures it will probably work. Within that block where the Eureka is located is what's gone boom over recent years - I think they are trying to get street artists in & decorate some of the small alley ways as some have been decorated in Melbourne.

Theres one group of 3 shops - Geelong Cellar Door, MAD Kitchen (asian fusion) and Pistol Petes (Southern American, Louisiana and Blues music) that each have their own shop fronts but share a back area; the tables out the back are shared across the 3 places but the alcohol licence is restricted to the Cellar Door (so they could have maybe said screw you to the other 2, but instead work together in unity and it's a crazy, packed area)

Theres a piano bar, friend chicken shop, another bbq restaurant (which does trivia nights & stuff), also along that stretch has opened a fancy looking Italian restaurant, an authentic Greek restaurant, theres different asian inspired restaurant and Armageddon Cakes which is ridiculously busy any time it's open.

The Old Court house is still there, and that is now a cafe and youth arts centre - often have different exhibitions there. The library has been rebuilt & looks amazing. Johnson Park underwent major redevelopment to stop it flooding, and for the past 6 or so years there has been a night market there during summer which was being run by the Vic Market but I think they pulled out & someone else stepped it to see it continue.

As you said, growing up in Geelong that is the area you avoided once the sun set - or even earlier. Johnson Park was where you went in Primary School for Poppykettle "celebration" and would roll down the grass hills annoying the teachers & then parents for being covered in grass stains.

But now that's the place to go - during the day it's a bit quieter & you can relax, or after work for drinks & dinner, and you can so easily just "restaurant hop", enjoy a drink at one place, first course at another and then try out a third place etc.

Wow, that sounds awesome now. Especially that cellar door thing.
Hahaha, Poppykettle, faark that takes me back, I forgot all about that.
The paper mache masks and running down Johnson park haha

The Geelong Performing Arts Center is in the process of being refurbished.
And Costa Hall is part of the old Geelong Wool stores that is now Deakin University on the beachfront.

Got pretty excited when I read the announcement but was a bit disappointed to see it only increases capacity by 4k, I feel we need 45k plus to begin drawing more Victorian teams and home finals. I remember they promised 44k if Australia won the world cup bid but that obviously never come to be. Probably a waste of tax payer dollars I've got to say but as Geelong fan how can I not be on board.

Depends what 40 means. Currently the capacity is 2k less than stated if the dining rooms AND seats aren't filled simultaneously. So could be +4k, could be +6k.

Biggest increase will come from a new Reg Hickey stand over moorabool st.

40,000 seat stadium = 11 home games in my book.
2018 was the last year that Melbourne played 2 home games in the NT. We played 2 games at the G this year. Logic says we swap out in 2019 (2 NT games become two more KP games), but I suspect somehow we will still end up with two games in Melbourne, probably Etihad.

We've actually gotta ask for 11 KP games fitst.
Everyone seems to ignore this point for some reason.

Im sure i heard Cook already say we will ask for 11. Losing money at the tuggers game when not many people showed up showed that playing home games at the g is not the gold mine it used to be, and we are better off having home games at our true home ground.

You don't think that Cook has October 1st in his calendar each year to ring head office and ask for 11 home games?
Lets see. If we ask for them let's see how we go.
If not can we stop this lame bitching about a home final? It's so embarrassing .

Reading in the paper that The 18th Amendment, the cocktail bar in Little Malop St which is apparently done in the style of 1920s - 1930s Chicago speakeasy prohibition style, this week won awards for best regional bar in Australia.

Definitely a step up from what that area was like 20 years ago
