Nothing to do with brownlow night-

let's have a third placed play off.

I know it's disappointing for players to miss out on the granny, to 'miss it by that much,' to quote the late great Maxwell Smart (who not a lot of people know was a bombers fan.)

The best thing is to get back on the horse, and play for a bronze medal. It happens in the World Cup Soccer and many other play off sports.

Grand final losers are sent a silver medal in the post, to prevent any of them throwing it in the Yarra or giving it to a kid.

Could be a Thursday night thing- free entry for the real fans.

Thoughts?

Lets see, a silver medal, sent to you in the post to remind you you lost the GF.
A bronze medal to remind you you didnt even make it to the GF.

But you got close to the Grand Final- a bronze medal or better still a signet ring bearing the AFL crest. Sure, it's not that great, but players later in life would probably still appreciate it.

Why stop at that.

Come at us Eagles. You are going down. 5th place is ours!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6th is for losers.

U obviously have never watched a 3rd place play-off in the world cup. I know I haven't. Unless there is an Olympic Medal at the end of it then it is a worthless game.

I was there when Peter Moore threw his runners-up medal into the crowd.

We're offering an AFL crested bronze signet ring...

Perhaps there could a be a pre grand final bye, to fit in these play off matches?
For retiring stars like Sam Mitchell, Petrie etc it would be preferable to a Hilux ride.
I know it seems unlikely now, but a few years after starting the tradition people, players and clubs will get used to it and plan Mad Monday around it etc

I was thinking of that- and Buckley angrily ripping off the Norm.

If the crows lost on sat i could imagine them lining up on the banks of the Yarra and heaving the 'loser medal' over in unison, arms by their side.

Another thought- all players who represent a club in a premiership year deserve a premiership medal, but I know we've been through that one

which means absolutely nothing. It just doesn't work.

A lot of athletes in athletics would jump at a chance to finish 3rd at the Olympics. Most will never get close. This prestige transcends to the whole Olympics. It is why 3rd place games in tennis, basketball etc should only happen at the Olympics. When it happens outside of that event, it turns into a glorious exhibition.

It gives the illusion of winning something to a ggroup that didn't make the final dance.

I would rather the players hurt and learn.

This type of thing doesn't feature in any annual knockout style comp that I can think of and is only reserved for things like thethe Olympics (because of medals going to bronze) and world cups because they try to squeeze every last cEnt out of it and it's only every four years.

No bloody way. I'd rather see State of Origin than this shit. Even if it was State of Origin based on the state leagues.
