Good to see them claiming back their land imo - I'm sure the states that are predominantly mexican won't break off from the states, but only for economic factors.

ITN - what do you think of the fact that the Mexican people are claiming back land that rightly belonged to it, yet simultaneously using your country for economic reasons? I think it's super dooper and funny.

Bit like Quebec

I agree with your final comment and would also say that if these people are Spanish, then didn't they take land from the previous owners anyway.

Well technically the "mexica" (orginal inhabitants of mexico) don't really exist that much any more due to teh Spainish basically killing them all and raping their women.

Most of south America suffered the same fate.

But when you consider the SPaniards don't do ******** to help them thesedays I think they're entitled to their countries previous history even if genetically tehy have more in common with the people that conquered it (much like people who have only a small amount of aboriginal in them,)

So basically the Mexicans aren't taking back land that originally belonged to them, they are taking back land they originally stole.

No, because they are mexicans, not spaniards.

Would you feel better if I had said "their ancestors originally stole"?

Nah, cause originally the Native Americans and mexica had it, they got butchered by the english and the spainish, the spainish tehn decided to rape and destroy almost all of south america and the english did likewise to north america.

so if anyone deserves to own it, considering the state of the native american people, it's the mexicans.

but it's all good, they won't breakl off from America, it isn't financially viable :)

I don't know much about the US way of doing things, but could the rest of the country kick them out and let them figure out things on their own

But the Mexicans are the ones who r*ped and pillaged the land in the first place, no matter what they call themselves they are still descendant from the Spanish invaders.

Do you know how hard it would be to kick out nearly half a state worth of people?

That's what this is abuot, they're becoming the majority in a lot of US states, and it's hilarious.

they're decendant from a lot of things, white/spanish/aztec/mexica but in teh end they're modern day mexicans.

And no they werent' the rapists, they were the rapees.

I think he meant kick the states out of the union.

Sorry I misunderstood before (cheers monkster) - I highly doubt it, the rest of the country wouldn't allow it.

aztec/mexica

Aztec and Mexica are one in the same. The Mexica were called Aztecs after the nation appropriated their name.

Also, rJ as right as you are about the Spaniard's treatment of the native Mexican population, you forget the greatest killer - disease introduced with Cortés's invasion.

True, but notwithstanding the fact disease, smallpox mainly I think, played a big part - the Spainish completely conquered and looted the entire civilization in the name of catholicism.

Regardless of numbers lost their entire civilization was destroyed.

And gold. Don't forget the gold. There is a chance that Cortés would not have gone on to Tenochtitlan had the Mexica not tried to buy favour with gifts, which included gold.

No, the Spanish did that. Modern Mexicans are 'mestizos', mixed blood of Spanish and Mexicas, so therefore their ancestry still does give them that link to the land.

Great country. :thumbsu:

Isn't it? I really had no interest in it until I started seeing my girlfriend, who was born in Mexico City.

Yeh, I met a Mexican and Europe and stayed with her family in Mexico, ended up dating her sister for a while. They're firecrackers. Unfortunately, that also meant it didn't end well. :(

But loved the country. Mexico City cops so much crap, but I loved it. Lived there for a while.

I've never been, south america scares me a bit (my mate got arrested in mexico and had to bribe the cops to get out - and that was in cancun!) but I find hte history of it all really interesting, the mayans, aztecs and incas were amazing cultures (some still claim the mayan civilization lives and many of thier practices have been incorporated into catholicism).

But yeah, even though they were interbred with the spainish the army Cortez used to conquer the Aztec capital was only 1,100 men so I think they still share a lot in common with the mexica.

One account has Montezuma pleading with a wise shaman to tell him how to avoid the coming catastrophe (this was before they knew the spainish were going to invade, they just knew that there was impending doom) and the shaman told him to eat the food of the poor and drink only boiled water - and montezuma and the aztec were unable to do this (this sort of agrees with Meaner's account that greed/wealth was the downfall of the Aztec by trying to bribe the spainish they showed their civlization was rich in gold). . .

Sorry to hear that. I'm hoping it goes a little better for me. I'm moving in with my GF on the weekend.

She lives here now? That would be easier...

Part of the problem was the closeness of the family and the strict religious attitude of the parents (who never knew I was dating her in the 3 months we were together), which made things difficult and stressful and in the end the fact that I would have to leave eventually placed too much pressure.

Meh, it's pretty easy to stay out of trouble. Cancun is just America in Mexico.

She's an Aussie citizen. Came her when she was four. Also, her parents are not all that religious. Her Grandmother apparently is though. Luckily, her Grandmother is still in Mexico. If I go over there I will probably have to pretend that we are married.

On the safety thing, my GF was supposed to go to Mexico this December to see her family (that was before we decided to move in together). She has cancelled that trip due (partly) to one of her relatives recently getting held up and detained by a gang armed with sub-machine guns
