This is his second year as a specialist goal kicking coach and i think we are going backwards at a rate of notts if that's even possible compared to last year. I don't have any stats besides that we have kicked more points than goals yet again this year. I remember reading an article at the start of the year that he was quoted on that he had to dismantle our poor techniques and build if you like a better one with the players. His excuse last year was that he needed to break then in order to make them.

This year we have played 6 games and that's a decent sample size to use. Now i believe that our set shot accuracy has gone backwards even more judging by the naked eye than last year. You can convincingly say that we lost a fair few games last year due to bad goal kicking and i'm fairly confident that if we kicked better against the crows we would have put the game to bed by quarter time and also that Freo game as well. Now i would love if someone can provide me with set shot accuracy from 2017/16 then when Dixon was appointment in 2018 and now in 2019 that would be great.

In saying that, i do believe our around the ground skill level has improved a bit (not a lot) compared to last year.

When is he going to get some criticism because right now we have lost 2 games due to poor conversion rates in front of goal which he is in charge of.

I think the money would be better spent on a psych.

Our goal kicking accuracy has been poor the last few years actually.

Take the first seven weeks of each season from 2017 to this year:

2017
r1 - 13.12 - lost to Melbourne 18.12
r2 - 13.19.97 lost to west coast 18.8.116 (free kicks were also 23-8 against us but more importantly we were up 6.7 to 4.0 so similar story to Adelaide game - change that to say 10.3 to 1.3 and it's a whole different ball game.
r3 - 14.23.107 defeated brisbane 11.10.76 - interesting stat - Mav Weller kicked our 23rd behind for the game - it was the most for us in a game since 1996 at that point - so up until then, I don't think we have the reputation of a poor goalkicking team.... maybe. Anyway...
r4 - 9.15.69 defeated Collingwood 7.13.55
r5 - 13.10.88 lost to geelong 19.12.126
r6 - 19.16.130 defeated Hawthorn 8.7.55 (big win down in Tassie but interesting to note that even with a massive win we still kicked poorly. Should have won this game by a hundred points, let's be real. Bruce missed from the goal square - hit the post)
r7 - 16.12.108 defeated GWS 12.13.85 - one of our rare matches of good accuracy at the start.

later in 2017 we had a three week stretch where we kicked 12.17.89 versus north, 14.19.103 versus Gold Coast and 12.17.89 versus Freo. We then followed that up with our most accurate outing of 2017 - 21.12.138 versus Richmond (at one stage 21.9)

2018
R1 - 16.11.107 versus Brisbane 12.10.82 - funny one this one - compare it to almost a year earlier and our accuracy looks to have improved - dramatically. The next seven weeks says otherwise.
R2 - 5.13.43 versus North 13.17.95 (was 2.10.22 apiece at halftime)
R3 - 7.13.55 versus Adelaide 15.14
R4 - 7.14.56 versus Geelong 15.13.103
R5 - 10.13.73 versus 9.19.73 GWS
R6 - 7.12.54 versus Hawthorn 13.11.89
r7 - 9.13.67 versus melbourne 16.10.106

For the rest of the year, accuracy didn't get much better - we had a purple patch during rounds 10 and 11 - Richmond 12.5.77 and West Coast 14.4.88 - still lost both of these games though. But apart from Melbourne at the G - 18.11.119 and the last two games - 11.10.76 and 14.10.94 (which we also lost both of them) we were more behinds than goals in almost every other match.

2019
R1 - 13.7.85 versus 13.6.84 - looked to have turned the corner. Maybe? no, false economy again...
R2 - 10.16.76 v 9.11.65 Essendon
R3 9.12.66 vs Freo 11.5.71
R4 - 10.14.74 v Hawthorn 10.9.69
R5 - 15.5.95 v Melbourne 7.13.55
r6 10.8.68 v Adelaide 15.7.97

So not as bad as last year but it's interesting to note where all these scores were:

The three ten goal efforts at Etihad this year were all under the roof whereas the 13.7 was in sunshine, the 15.5 was at the G and the 9.12 was at Optus.

All seven scores in 2018 were at Etihad except r4 which was in geelong and r6 in tassie - r1,3,5 and 7 all under the roof, r2 in sunshine.

All seven scores in 2017 were at Etihad except r2 - West Coast and r6 - tassie - r1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 all under the roof.

being under the roof or not honestly means nothing but just showing the innaccuracy has been there a while now. Can't blame Dermie or Dixon tbhh. It's a mental thing. Just focus on kicking goals instead. 3.6.24 we were at one stage on Saturday - then kicked 7.2 after that.

Chris Grant talking to Mike Sheahan in Herald Sun, May 22, 2010
Grant said “experts” often complicate things by altering a player’s grip, how high or low he holds the ball, whether the ball is in the right line vertically, and the player’s arc as he runs in. He said a player is better off using his natural technique and kicking to a target behind the goals.
...............
Enough said.

Good analysis. Would love to know just set shot accuracy, because this year it feels like we have scored more goals in the square or on the run.

Would love to see the stats for set shots, total scoring is not really an accurate measure. In regards to the weekend, had a sinking feeling when stuv mark he would missed, kind of hoped he'd play on and snap. To me its the psychological issue, due to the pressure, when players are on the run they don't have time to think generally (and when they do they generally snuff it).

Ok so i was keen to see set shots and rushed as well so i hit up the telstra thingy
Round 1: 13.7...4 of them rushed
Round 2: 10.16...2 of them rushed
Round 3: 9.12...3 of them rushed
Round 4: 10.14...3 rushed, 2 were touched
Round 5: 15.5...1 rushed, 2 were posters
Round 6: 10.8...1 rushed

Big turning point that. I was there too, Crows went and scored at the other end which hurt so much because we were well on top.

I'd like some clarity from the coaches on Dixon's role at present, his explanation of the results thus far, his short term and long term expectations, the coaching group's assessment.

Frankly, from the outside perspective it seems to have had a mostly detrimental effect. I'd be very keen to know how long they will allow this to go on before trying something else.

What the hell are they teaching them at Auskick?

*Run in a straight line and kick through the big sticks.
*For every one kick with your dominant foot, ten with your other foot.
(Might get a few more players who can kick with both feet.)

Surely it’s as easy as that?:rolleyes:

I remember how Mathew Richardson would say he practices all the time, and they always go through at training.

We really need to look at it individually and the difficulty of shots we get.. Bruce and Membrey are actually good shots for goal, Billings and Lonie not so much.. All 4 can do better if we get more set shots near the corridor, e.g. lead and mark in less than 30 degrees angle and less than 40 metres out. If most of our shots are from the boundary line (more space), accuracy is going to be low.

Had to bump this thread back up. Over the last 5 week's, our ability to shoot ourselves in the foot has easily cost us a couple of games.

When will a journo ask the question about Dixon and what's been done about our inability to kick a simple set shot for 30 Metres out?

We are going backwards at a rate of notts and tonight on the couch we are ranked dead last in the competition from areas we should be slotting them through. Simply not good enough.

What I want to know is: On what basis did we hire Dixon? - was it just cos he was a good goalkicker himself or was he actually proven to be a good teacher of goal kicking at some earlier stage?

Edit: actually, what I really want to know is: How much longer are we going to give his methods before we write it off as a failed experiment and get someone who can actually effectively teach our boys how to kick goals?

I suppose he might be doing a good job and our players are just that useless, but I doubt it. I think it's more likely from everything that players have said in our off season that the standards at Moorabbin are pretty loose and training is too gentle.

It cannot continue like this.

We will continue to lose games if this isnt sorted out. I'd be giving Dixon until the bye to fix up and improve our accuracy and if not then give him the flick. Can't be any worse than it is.

There were 4 absolute shockers missed in China. Sinclair twice from 10 metres out, Bruce from 7-8 metres out and Phillips, set shot 25 metres straight in front. I would have kicked them all in my under 14 year. Nothing Dixon can do about these....harder to miss than to kick and the players should be hauled over the coals.

Our kicking for goal in recent years has never been great but unbelievably it seems to be getting worse, some of those misses on Sunday were unforgivable.

Just so deflating to miss easy shots at goal after doing all the hard work to create them and more often than not it leads to a goal down the other end.

You just can't expect to win many games when you butcher so many chances in front of goal and hand the momentum back to the opposition.

Surely the club must be aware of this problem and are taking steps to address it but given the lack of improvement in this area I have my doubts.
