Am I right in saying we still don't have a goalkicking coach?

Assuming this is right, how on earth can this be the case? It's 2018 and we're supposedly a professional football club.

Daniher is obviously the chief culprit, but there's others. It's cost us games before and will do so again - hopefully not big ones.

Why on earth do we want to be ruing this once it's too late? It's a basic fundamental which will make a real difference to us winning and losing games.

Watching Daniher take multiple set shots from the same spot and use a different approach every time is painful. Jonathon Brown pointed out last night how at sea he is... and of course he is, because he doesn't have a routine. He's all over the place every time he gets a set shot.

What the * gives??

Jonathon Brown doesn't have a clue about Daniher. Daniher has different routines depending on where he takes the mark, which includes running around and snapping for goal. Daniher was using the exact same method last year, including during the period after the Melbourne game where he went something like 21-1 over a period of many weeks.

Daniher is getting potted because of 2 incidents - 1 the handball he never should have made and 2 a bad miss from the round the body shot (which actually he has a good record of kicking throughout 2017). The bigger problem for Daniher is his workrate is not at his 2017 levels so he's not getting as many shots on goals.

I do agree a goal kicking coach should be employed in general though.

More than once I've seen Daniher take a snap from a set shot, and later in the game take a drop punt from almost exactly the same spot

It's clear as day he doesn't have a routine, Brown is right about that.

It only needs to be a part time role but we should have someone there for a few hours a week, every week, focusing on goal kicking. Surely we've got a bit left over in the footy department cap for something like this.

My understanding of the role that other clubs have (and we've had in the past) is it's 1-2 sessions a week with the forwards for about 30-45 mins.

I don't see why on earth we're not doing it.

This is plainly incorrect. He has a very set routine when going back for a set shot. He takes his time, he waits until about 8 seconds are left, he wipes his hands on his bum, he picks up the ball, he spins it backwards several times and then takes a massive breath in to settle himself before walking in. It's a very set routine...

Yes, when he decides to take a regulation set shot it's fine.

That he sometimes goes the 'around the body' approach from straight in front and at other times goes the regulation approach is odd though, and that was Bunk's original point.

His around the body shots are a conscious decision though. My point is, when he takes a normal set shot at goal, he has a very regulated set shot routine.

Yes but why two different approaches for the exact same position? It doesn’t make much sense.

Did you ever see Lloyd elect to snap a set shot from somewhere you’d generally drop punt from? Nope.

Well no, but no one ever did really before Stevie J...

Isnt it all about percentage chance anyway? The snap has a pretty low probability to miss as mechanically the ball follows the same arc every time and its less influenced by issues you may have such as ball drop, or fatigue.

The drop punt has so many cues like angle of your shoulders, ball drop, lean back, lean forward, arc of your leg, balance and is influenced heavily by fatigue.

No one should have a problem with Joe kicking round the corner if he is kicking them and tbh i cant recall him missing any apart from the one on the weekend. He makes himself a target for media criticism i believe because he does things alternatively and looks so care free on the field. People question his work rate.

The issue is why he chooses to do it. Obviously he feels comfortable doing it, which means he isnt comfortable with just a normal drop punt.
That could be explained by the very limited goal kicking (when compared to your Loyds and Dubstalls who took 1000s of shots) he has had in the last two seasons due to knee issues.

Not sure why he has to kick a drop punt though? Is there some rule he has to kick a drop punt?

A Port fan no less behind me on Sunday said after Joe kicked that beautiful drop punt for a goal, why on earth does a player who can kick like that ever do anything else?

We know these problems are all in his head, it should have been addressed by now.

Foorball department cap and spending would come into it aswell.
There is also no guarantee it has any effect. Look at saints who took up Dickson's services and many of the saints fans in our office say its gone backwards.

He needs an effective routine. He can kick them however he likes, as long as he works out the best way to do it, and sticks with it.

He'l kick a snap and then half an hour later go with a drop punt from exactly the same spot.

I can't believe we don't have a coach for this. How did we need Lloyd to do this, and then after he left, we don't need one now?

Jonathon Brown’s commentary is consistently out of date. It’s like he hasn’t watched Joe play a game since about Anzac Day 2017.

And he does the same with other players... he sees one thing in front of him, generalises as if they always do that and have made the same mistake consistently for the last month, and then gives an opinion based on that. He’s nearly always wrong as far as Essendon players are concerned though. I don’t care enough about other clubs to notice if he’s as consistently wrong about them, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Lazy commentary at its finest.

Look at Carlton for the opposite. Casboult's kicking has improve 100000% since Rocca started working with him.

Lloyd made the comment after he left that Daniher can become a very good goalkicker, he just has to keep working at it over, and over and over again. That should be done with a specialist coach.

Agree in general - he nailed this though.

I may be wrong, but isnt Rocca the forward coach there? Hes not purely a specialist kicking coach?

We had Skipworth doing kicking with the forwards last year and im assuming whoever is tgere this year is doing the kicking stuff as part of their role.

The club would hire someone if they thought it was needed. There will be a reason why they havnt.

So so true. If you pay attention to his commentary you realise that he sees one thing occur and then assumes the same thing happens every week. His entire opinion on players is based on the particular match he happens to see but then he makes it sound like he has formulated it based on their history.

Then the next time he sees them play he goes back to his last opinion.

It fits in with my goldfish theory of footy observation. Most commonly found amongst vocal fans in the crowd and forum posters. Basically it states that the crap they yell out/post is accurate over the previous 5 seconds. An example from Sunday was after Hartley dropped a mark a bright spark near me grouched that he always dropped marks despite the fact he'd already taken a couple at that point. If you always to be previous 5 seconds then he wasn't wrong.

I probably need to tweak it a bit but for most part it seems to hold up.

So really Brown is just fitting in with a large chunk of the football following public. :p

Players don't practice and don't have regular routines.
And a lot don't have TRC Timing Rhythm Co-ordination
The best kick in the AFL by a mile is Tory Dickson but he's not getting a regular game - great action and same routine.
Jack Riewoldt, Josh Kennedy, Jeremy Cameron be the next best 3.
Joe, Hooker, Buddy dont drop or kick the same every time hence their unreliability.

As someone who was lifetime 74% (330.115) in the bush leagues we practised after every session.
