It's just another instance of the AFL taking a cheapo approach to trying to fix something. Pay to have two super slo mo cameras behind each goal and then two cameras at the top of a goal post pointing down. Pressure sensors in the goalposts are probably not needed but also wouldn't be that expensive in this day and age. Grainy blurred footage that 'might' show a finger being bent back as the ball is kicked or a ball touching the post - the whole thing is farcical and doesn't inspire confidence

Pretty sure in cricket that Cricket Australia pays for the run out cameras/hawkeye to be at each ground. The AFL's attempt is just so half arsed that it may as well be pointless it being there.

Am I missing something?

Probably better for it to be half arsed at all grounds than crystal clear at some and terrible at others. At least that's what I assume the afl's rationale is. And yes, they're tightarses

First things first - upgrade what appear to be gopro 4s in the goal posts to the latest model, and turn them 90 degrees. it doesn't matter if it doesn't look great for tv, it covers more of the line (vertically) which half the time is missed because of the 16:9 landscape position they're in.

And then yes, 100% stop being cheap campaigners and invest in 2 ultra highspeed 4k cameras available at every game

What’s the solution, this year the system is an absolute joke. It’s not the technology that’s the issue, it’s the umpires and their inability to make a decision.

Umpires are refusing to make a call. They are all too scared to make basic calls constantly every game.

There is non stop 4-5 unnecessary reviews every game so far this year.

If the umpires aren’t competent, get some that are. If they have been advised to review everything, the system is broken.

Goal umpires need to be better at making a decision. They may as well have blind mice on the goal line this year because they review everything anyway.

Whilst it’s annoying that the goal umpires seem scared to make a call. I can empathise to a degree. There are some legit crazies out there and gambling has taken over the game. Using tonight as an example. Total line was 173.5 and it finished on 173.
More they ever a point matters…

Cameras looking at goal lines and then having humans adjudicate on it will just keep leading to more errors, it won’t matter how many cameras and how good they are. Need to have goal line technology like they did in the FIFA World Cup. Know the exact position of the ball to the millimeter. Only then will errors diminish.
Should get to a stage where goal umpires aren’t required and they go the way of lines men/women in tennis.

It's ruining the game. Scrap it. Completely stopping the flow of the game. Fans are starting to boo them now everytime it happens. Last night's game was farcical

3 year Optus contract runs out in July

Can upgrade to the new iPhone 15 on a new 3 year deal then.

Should be ok for finals.

The AFL and all sporting bodies actually, should invest in technology, it may cost a lot but I know for a fact, just looking at broadcasting rights, that they can afford it. The only people who can initiate a review are the on-field officials and the people in the booth, that way the only times we use it, is when we know we need to use it. The problem with coach and captain challengers is teams can run out then get on the receiving end of a howler of a decision, defeating the whole purpose of the system. The off-field officials in the booth can look at a decisions even if the on-field official's don't ask for it, and if they spot an error they can step in and correct the error. Very much like VAR and that shows that there will still be mistakes, but that is down to the fact that humans are at the heart of this, so errors will always be made. The error that can be made is by the big wigs who just can't be bothered to make a change that will be better than what we currently have and that is what we should be hoping for.

Should descope the system. Set up a 15 metre semicircle around the goal line. Any touch inside that 15m can be reviewed. Now that the cameras can focus on a much smaller area instead of all over the ground. Change the criteria for a touch, so if simply touching the ball is not enough. To be 'touched' the ball has to clearly be deviated by the touch. This is pretty much what happened before we had video reviews. If the finger bends but it doesn't affect the balls trajectory it's a goal. Same applies for that goal this weekend where the player stepped on the ball and they called it a goal. It didn't deviatevso go with the umpires call. The system was bought in because in two grand finals posters were called goals. That should be the focus, not on a ball grazing someone's fingertips.
