Goddard

I am not particularly fussed about Goddard joining EFC.

I don't understand how this thread has got to 12 pages, when Goddard is average and EFC are below average.

Something is amiss !

Exactly. Just an average player going to a middle of the road club.

Why are people so concerned about this??

You're right! We shouldnt try and improve our list. In fact we should delist Watson and Hurley, because, what would happen if they got injured.
If you cannot see the difference......

I'll put it bluntly. IF getting Goddard squeezes out team mates who are much loved, there will be an underlying animosity there. Losing him to injury then means the loss of those mates has been for nothing.
It's very different to say a Hurley getting injured as he wouldn't have forced anyone out. And even if he did because of a substantial pay increase it still is different. Hurley has spilt blood for the club time and time again. Players look at that differently. Have you ever played in a professional team before?

You've missed the point of your own post, as 'professional teams' suck it up & move on & do the job regardless.

Think the club may be paying a tad overs if quoted figures are true, but at this point we've got to inject talent into the list & clean out the crud, so welcome Brendon, welcome.

I would have thought it was quite obvious, Saints are most likely coming up to a period where it will be hard to remain near the top. Very rarely are teams able to rebuild while staying up, and they aren't stupid. They realize Goddard will be either gone or well past it by the time they are challenging again (probably 3-4 years) so take the good pick, free up some cap space to try and attract someone more suitable to where the list currently is.

As a Saints supporter I think this is where I am at. Goddard has not been the same player since the 2010 drawn GF. I think those games knocked the stuffing out of him and he will benefit from a new club.

Saints need some quality youth. If we can get a First round compensation pick then it will be an OK result for the club and help us challenge again in 3 - 4 years.

Let's not kid ourselves fellow Bomber supporters. If Goddard was going to Carlton, Collingwood or Hawthorn we'd have our fair share of trolls telling everyone about how Goddard is past his prime etc.

Stoked to be getting him on board if announced :thumbsu:

That's the problem today. Bloody sooks.

If it happens, I'll be glad to get another experienced player on the park. If it doesn't happen I'll be disappointed; but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Why does seeking to improve our list mean that we are sad, worried and desperate?

Your club is prepared to pay top dollar for a player past his best who is neither a genuine midfielder or key position player, and never has been... in other words, he's not an impact player. Reeks of desperation.

Because your uneducated opinion says so?

Is calling me uneducated supposed to somehow increase the strength of your position here? The bottom of the barrel is getting close isn't it?

Reeks of desperation.

Well... yeah.

The current state of things at Essendon is not acceptable. We haven't really done this sort of thing anymore so we'll take a whack at it. If it doesn't work so be it, at least we won't die wondering.

Monfries looks a casualty.
Along with Prismall, Lonergan, possibly Reimers, probably Dyson and the final nail in Slattery's coffin.
And that brilliant work ethic and team spirit we've had all these years, the consistency of effort, all of that will be shaken to the core and have to be rebuilt.

And all we'll have to show for it will be introducing Goddard, and two very talented first round draft picks, and whoever else we draft/recruit into the side.

Will we ever recover?

Goddard won't be squeezing anyone out. If we get him he will well & truely be shoving out a player like Dyson or Lonergan who have had ample opportunity to cement a spot. If there is anyone on our list who is so mentally fragile that getting rid of mid aged fringe players causes them animosity then thats great because we can move them on as well. Any professional team should embrace the opportunity to strengthen that team. If you have people who are afraid of upping the competition then again these are people who will not take your team forward.

Goddard is a no brainer & only trolls could think otherwise. He's not going to single handedly fix all Essendon's problems but he will improve the list. Even if he doesn't play much mid he still fills a massive need we have for a backline clearance player. Anyone who has actually watched us with any type of football knowledge should see that outside of Fletch we have lacked a quality kicker on the backline. Hardingham, Hooker & Hibberd far too often turn the ball over & with Heppel moving into the midfield we have desperately needed another quality ball user down back.

To put it "bluntly", in the actual, real world, we're not losing anyone who's in (nor ever been in) the leadership group, nor anyone who's best 22.

Plenty of guys are "well loved" but not that good, and get chopped for better models.
Goddard is a better model. By a fair bit, too.

Fair points..
