Goddard

Free agency is something fans are going to have to get used to. I don't mind free agency. It lets clubs hang on to a player for at least 8 years. And players seek success and or money at the end of their career. Some clubs will be hit hard but they will also have the opportunity to get players back. The salary cap will stop a club stockpiling stars.
In regards to Goddard the bombers will overpay but no doubt fee agency will see this happen a lot when a player moves.

You finally beat us after how many years?

Your bitterness serves as proof that Essendon have made a good signing.

Our last 10 clashes it's 5-5 but oh yes the Essendon dominance of St Kilda is truly a thing to behold!

I'm seriously not bitter in the slightest. I WANT Essendon to take him. I hate your club and the funny thing is you are paying 600k+ for a lazy half back loose defender who will do SFA if manned up.

Thanks Essendon!

Assuming he departs - will it be viewed by Saints fans as treachery or is there now an acceptance that this is part and parcel of the modern game and Free Agency?

Perhaps i'm stuck in the past - and there's probably a lot to this from what club are offering etc but from an uninformed and outsiders perspective, it does look a tad ordinary to be leaving.

It's part and parcel of making a living to provide uoiur family and for your future. Ross Lyon left for the same reasons.

This just forces loyalty to be more of a two-way street. If each club treats their players well then they needn't worry too much about free agency.

Most AFL players don't have a tribal connection with their club like supporters, many supported other sides for their first 18 years of life. It's a job and they should have a say in who they work for.

If a club doesn't value a player as much as another, or offer them other things outside of dollars (premiership success, strong culture etc.), then that player should be able to move IMO.

Deep breaths mate. It'll be ok.

Enjoy paying 600k for Chapman to do sfa next year.

Again with the BS assumptions. Chapman has never been paid 600k, which is obvious considering all the stars who remained in the team for such a long period.

So your club copies / grabs whatever you can from the Geelong football club (incl. fitness coach who runs your piss weak players into the dirt on the Geelong program), now offer desperatly high $$ contracts to players like Goddard who are past their best.

Fail... and will continue to fail. Enjoy.

And you assume Geelong offered him significantly less than Essendon. Waiting for proof...

Sad fact is that nobody wants to be anywhere near Geelong. Ablett, Thompson, Boak, Dangerfield. Have fun with Jared Rivers... :D

You were probably spouting similar crap when Ball bailed on your club.

How will Saints fans view Goddard as compared to Ball?

Ball left the club to go to a team contending with us for the premiership and helped them win it. He will never ever be welcomed back at our club. Goddard is a bit more understandable. Were at least 5 years away from contending again, and it seems he wanted to stay with us, but on a 4 year deal. At least there is no chance he will be lining up against us in a Grand Final like Luke Ball did.

The days of a 'one club player' will slowly fade.

Absolute nonsense.

Didn't realise he's so old. 28 next year. Essendon must think they're pretty close to a flag.

I think, in all seriousness, they've realised that if we keep sitting on our hands and wait for the core of our list to hit the "right age" then the commodity of Watson will be wasted. If we can retain the core of what we think can push for a flag in the 2015 region while still having a damn good crack while Jobe's in his prime then the club will be doing its best to lift itself out of the mire.

That's if, if, if, but, er... if this works out then the motivating factor is most definitely giving Watson the support he desperately lacks.

Scott Watters said from the beginning of the year that the Saints would probably lose at least one of their highly paid high profile players at years end, it's just that no-one knew who it would be. Well now we do. It sucks that it's BJ but of our player list he is probably the most sought after by the other clubs. And no, he is not irreplaceable.

Where did he place in this years BnF? He's not the player he was 2 years ago. Clubs worked him out, put a player on him and he's rattled. 500,000 at most in my view
I'm okay with this. All that means is Jobe gets 30 damaging possessions and Stanton gets 40 possessions. Its probably less the 500k towards the last year anyway.

Brendon Goddard's hamstrings when they learnt of his move to Essendon.

(may not understand if you haven't seen the 'stahp' memes on Facebook.)

Typical preschooler response. "We didn't want him anyway. He's a big poopy head"

You were probably spouting similar crap when Ball bailed on your club.

Ball was a sensationsal mid but was only quarter the player he would of been had he not had chronic groin problems which was the point where Collingwood picked him up and the fact he sat a large part of the grand final on the bench. Collingwood was prepared to give him a chance and good luck to him.

Anyway you will see quickly in crunch games why Goddard isn't all he's cracked up to be.

If the offer reported is true, (750-800k a year for 4 years) then it is massive overs for Goddard. It's all well and good to think we'll get the 2010 model and we can just squeeze all these spuds out to pay him. But the fact remains Goddard dropped his bundle in 2011, he isn't close to the dominant force he was in 09-10. He's probably worth 500-600k (being generous) right now, and in 3-4 years he could be worth half that. Then when we have players who have hopefully kicked on wanting a deserved raise in 2015 or so, Goddard is sitting there eating up a huge chunk of cap space.

So it is massive overs IMO, however I will take into account the fact that Essendon cannot land a goldfish in a koi pond, so just getting a player of Goddard's caliber at the club could prove a great boon for a club who hasn't gotten anybody worth a pinch of salt in trade week since the 90's.

This is all conjecture though, and due to the above I won't believe Essendon have Goddard until I see him sitting next to Hird wearing an Essendon tie/polo.

St. Kilda are in need of a rebuild and Essendon are years away from contending for a top 4 position.

We contended this year until we fell apart.

I must admit, I think a 4 yr deal on the reported money is a huge risk for the Bombers. ESP considering his age. Whilst he's a good player at best right now, I do honestly believe his best is behind him. Huge overs imo. I don't think he's the player that will elevate them to the next level.
