Goddard

Its all still money your club has in its pockets thats now gone, so if it couldnt have been used on coaching then it should have been used on better players. You now have a player to sit loose on the HBF, of which you already had players in that position. Would love to hear his reasoning for the move, has to be for money rather than success.
It's money we are forced to spend. There's no holding onto it for next year, or using it on extra recruiters - have to spend between 95% & 100% of the salary cap (which is going up a few percent every year)

We can choose to spend it on Dyson & Prismall types, give some kids (who we're no danger of losing) far far far more money than they're worth, or spend it on a proven gun in Goddard.

Really is a no-brainer.

It's a different equation for clubs who have that core of 12-15 proven, good players. Majority of our good players are kids.

Win Win Situation For St Kilda, And For Bombers,

Clubs like St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne are really going to struggle in free agency.....
the afl dose not want these sides winning grand finals,

thet want the carltons west coasts collingwood and hawthorn all the big pulling clubs to be up the top

Teams that will struggle in free agency: Teams who are close to their salary cap.
Teams that will benefit from free agency: Teams who have a lot of spare cash.

You know which teams generally make up the first group? Top teams. You know who makes up the second group? Bottom teams.

There will obviously be some players who leave poorly performing teams but in most cases free agency is just another mechanism to create equality.

Saints have played in two (three) GF's and a tonne of finals recently, Essendon has two EF embarrassments.

Maybe if he was going to Sydney, or Geelong, or Hawthorn etc.

StKilda have been a better side in recent years, but no more or less successful than Essendon....as in neither side has had what Essendon consider "success", i.e. premierships.

I'm not sure what Kosi's contracts have been in the past but I doubt he would be on much now and wouldn't have stopped us from keeping Goddard if we wanted to match your offer. Ball left for more opportunities at Collingwood rather than more money.
.

Ball left for more opportunities when StKilda decided his days of playing decent footy where behind him and offered him less years and less money than his market value - obviously I'll be crossing my fingers and hoping that StKilda are making a similar misjudgement this time....i'm happy enough to roll the dice and see for ourselves :)

A serious question (and apologies if it's been addressed and I missed it?) - what were kozi's recent and previous contracts worth in terms of approx money and years?? Had you farked off that C grader (trying to be kind) spud, could the saints have made better offers and kept ball and BJ instead of kozi???

If so, no one to blame but yourselves.

Ps. Re the cap, take out (and of course I'm speculating on these figures) monfries(400), Prismal (330), mcveigh (340), Dyson (260ish?), slattery(240), and poss lonergan (260??) and keep in mind essendon were already further below the cap than stkilda, seems like a risk worth taking to me. (non of those 6 are guaranteed best 22 by any stretch - most/poss all are not in our best side)

Time will tell of course, but BJ having an apparently disinterested year in 2012 = 24.4 disposals from a smart and penetrating user of the footy, and finishing 4th in their b&f....

Worth a crack in a successful culture IMO.
I don't think it's about what St Kilda could have paid Goddard, more about what St Kilda thought was a fair deal, considering other players on the list and the projected worth of younger players on the list that are expected to improve, and by their own rights, earn more in seasons to come.

The figures coming out of the club are that he was offered upwards of $600k per year, so not exactly a long way away from what he is reportedly contracted for at Essendon.

At any rate, Kosi is on the veterans list and doubtful he would be on a very big contract, though obviously bigger than Blake as we delisted Blake last season (who was on the veterans list) to make room for Kosi. I believe Kosi already had a contract extending into 2013 so delisting him wouldn't free up any room in the cap, and it's highly doubtful he could have been traded (or if he was traded, we'd likely still pay a large chunk of his wage anyway).

I think Goddard simply wanted to leave St Kilda, for reasons best known to himself. Maybe he sees Essendon as a team more likely to challenge for the ultimate success in the next few years, and it wasn't as much about the dollars as the fans would somehow like to think it is.

The insecurity and jealousy in this thread is ****ing gold. :D

There's a lot of Mitch Clark 2011 about this deal...

People saying Essendon (Melbourne) overpaid for a player who does not have the quality (anymore?) to justify the price

yeah Essendon should have focused on recruiting a young player. I mean, look how recruiting Darren Jolly worked out for Collingwood.
I am not against Essendon recruiting Goddard but the two scenarios are quite different. Collingwood were preliminary finalists with a glaring need for a ruckman before recruiting Jolly and even then they also got Luke Ball to fill another need. Essendon didn't make the finals last year. They aren't Goddard from a flag. From playing in September maybe but that is a hellof a long way from a premiership.

I am shattered. Before I read this thread I was over the moon about Goddard. Reading opposition supporters thoughts on him I have come to the conclusion that he is a massive dud that is over the hill and will never amount to anything. :(

Is anyone saying we are a Goddard from a flag?

If he plays as well for us as Jolly has for you (or as Salmon was for Hawks etc etc) then he's a good pick-up, and has helped us improve.

Does Goddard's last two years warrant so much excitement? Maybe a change of scenery will reinvigorate him. But the guy is 28 and I'd argue his best days behind him. Essendon don't look likely to challenge for a flag for a couple of years. Overall, I don't think Saints should be too upset over it

How is Goddard going to fit training in now that he has a new job at Toll? Will he work Hird hours or normal people hours?
The Weapon will make sure that he won't be able to train. He'll have plenty of time to do his new job. ;):P

I'm not. But (most) Essendon supporters seem to be choosing to interpret that as crazy jealousy...

I'd prefer the pick at this stage. And if we can turn that compensation pick into a Caddy, then in three years time we might be looking back at this as a fantastic offseason for us.

Goddard is a hack, who still finished top 4 in the Saints B&F, was still offered a contract to make him one of the highest players at their club (just no 4th year), still led the club for most kicks per game in 2012, and was second for disposals per game. He was one of the best players in the competition for two years while his side was challenging for the premiership, and he is 27 years old and in his physical prime.

And Essendon didn't have to give up anything for him.

Yet he's not worth about the same as Mitch Clark...
