yeah but id rather tulla than seaford,

st kilda western bulldogs are really going to struggle to hang on to gun players / and really struggle to attract quality free agents

We've still got a number of gun players, some of which we have just re-signed.

The main reason Goddard left was for more money despite all the other reasons him and his manager might have given, no player ever admits they just left for more money though. That's the only reason players go to the Gold Coast too, if Ablett wasn't earning millions there he would be out of there in a flash.

What was the actual injury that he had with his hip ?

He carried a hip cartilage tear all of 2011, not sure how extensive the surgery was, but was on crutches for about 8 weeks from memory.

Someone better than me can answer how long it actually takes to feel good again.

He needed a full hip replacement, he now has the body of a 90 year old which is why we were happy to let him go.

A bit surprised the lack of press this has got. Its a massive get for the Dons and a sign they are getting serious. Like a cpl of other clubs they've been precious with trading and difficult to deal with...with a misplaced arrogance that guys should want to go to them instead of aggressively chasing.
Those days are long gone for every club.
In the past the only time you can hope to pry these types loose is after a down season/period such as he's had OR they must actively and specifically want to go to your club.
Can speculate tiill blue in the face WHY he's going to the Dons but he must have his reasons...afterall even his captain has taken a massive pay cut for his club and openly offered up Goddard to the players as captain if the players choose. Also nothing wrong with moving for $ or the chance at a flag...maybe he's just taking a punt after seeing Dons list and playing them.

He's perfect for them too...above everything specific they have needed CLASS players with excellent decision making. The guy will win matches for them and prove to be a great trade...not a single club that wouldnt chase if they had the $ space after this down period he's had. Can fill any list gap and even end up a FF.
Class utility...big big $ you can never get by holding out a bag of peanuts.
Interesting to see what Saints get...its a brave new world.
Cant imagine a single reason a Dons fan shouldnt be stoked about this...a new big name signing can lift an entire list.

its happened far too close to grand final day to get the press it deserves.. there should be a week off before free agency starts

You guys are forgetting the power and alure and lifestyle of the big clubs

what afl superstar would want to train all the way out in seaford
when you have power house clubs like Richmond,Collingwood,Carlton in the City....

St kildas biggest mistake is that seaford training base

St Kildas biggest mistake was not playing Ball more in the 2009 GF.

Training base distance from Melbourne hasnt affected the GFC.

O'rly ? Chaplin is the only Port player we actually have commited to and he fills a need and structre requirment that any neutral would understand. Also thiers a huge diffrence in price we are paying for his services lol. Also before you mention Knights, again, he address a need and has a clear role. He is of a age we need ( just turned 26). He is a HFF who can rotate in the middile ( the only other we have that can sorta do that is Nahas with limited success).

Thats completley diffrent then the tigers commiting 700+ for a sweeper for 4 years. Now I understand ( typical BF) that you recon im having a go so you will go on the attack BUT seriously, If essendon had offered say 500 for 2 with an option for a 3rd I would say well done but you guys havent. Thats the reason for my question. Again in 4 years time it will come across as a good decsion or not.
Yes, because Goddard is a) fit and b) very, very, very good.

Enjoy Knights - he was a good player 4 years ago.

I guess if you spend as much as you will on Goddard and thereby don't spend it elsewhere and don't get far on field it will have been a failure but that is not what I've been talking about if you look at the posts. It was a pretty simple point in response to an irelevent analogy about Jolly and Collingwood. I actually said I wasn't againt the Goddard recruitment. It is just not justifiable with reference to Collingwood at all beauce the clubs were/are in different positions and in any case it wasn't just Jolly but also Ball that made the difference between PF losers and GF winners.
I fully understand what you're saying; I just think it's so simplistic it's all-but worthless.

He's one bloke on a list of 40-odd.
Sure, as one of the highest paid guys, he does take on more responsibility than most, but I think it's a bit stupid to judge his worth to Essendon solely on the club's success. If we don't win a flag then he's as much of a failed recruit as Watson, as Hird, or Hurley or Michael Ross.

Otherwise you'd also have to be calling guys like Buckley 'failed' recruits.

Yeah, "success" will be a whole range of outcomes and you probably won't know it for a few years. I remember the Aaron Hamill situation. Was great at the time but that 5 year contract killed us in the end. It strangled our ability to compete for players and Hamill's last 2 years on the field were mediocre and intermitent.

If Goddard helps Bombers into top 4 and they are able to maintain their list whilst paying him then most would see it as successful.

You signed him at rock bottom, and by the end of his 5 years you were in 2nd or 3rd week of finals, pretty sure you improved year on year on year.
Again, not really sure why his contract was more of an issue than Gehrig's, Harvey's, or whoever else's you were paying.

He was a crock in his 5th year, I'll give you that - that's the risk we're running with Goddard, pretty hard to predict but 31 is asking a bit of him.

If Goddard helps Bombers into top 4 and they are able to maintain their list whilst paying him then most would see it as successful.
Again, that's a bit arbitrary.

We know.

We just wanted to give Fletch some company.

We originally signed Hamill in 2000 and in 2003 we signed him up on a further 5 years. Signing Hamill was a great thing for the Saints. Giving him a 5 year contract was not a great thing as we carried his cost over virtually 2 and a half years when he hardly played.

Neither Gehrig nor Lawrence were given anything more than 3 year contracts as best I know.

Wondering if Goddard's temperament will change/level out after leaving St Kilda? He was a very angry man this year, didn't seem to be enjoying his football at all. I know he's always had a bit of the mongrel in him, but maybe that was exacerbated by the way St Kilda were playing, or the way Watters wanted him to play?

If he can return to his form of a couple of years ago he will be a huge pick up for the Bombers. If he continues on like he did this year, mmmmm...

Can't see why it wouldn't improve, he wants to be with us, and should see an increased role as well as a lot of love from our fans, I'd say he'd be determined to prove himself but hopefully a little less angry

Wondering if Goddard's temperament will change/level out after leaving St Kilda? ...

I don't think his temperament will ever change. He has been the same since he started, an extremely competitive person. He gets filthy when the side is losing and he his very driven by winning. I think if he ever loses that then he has lost his passion for the game.

I think his last two years have more to do with what he put himself through in 09 and 10 and the toll it had on his body than his temperament.

I had a dream a couple of days ago and in it, it was BJ and Jobe holding the Premiership trophy together...:)

Great post mate, although Reiwoldt hasn't taken a pay cut but was on a front loaded contract.

Hirdy stated at his press conference that he loves Goddard's temperament and said it shows that he plays to win.

All this makes sense. Goddard was my favourite Saints player for a long time, but this year I got sick of watching him sook and grump his way around the field. TBH (and this won't come as a surprise to Saints fans I'm sure) he really looked like a guy who'd had enough of playing for their club. Like Hall for us in his last year.

I hope Goddard recaptures his form.

Perhaps thinking about a move, mind not entirely on the job? Can be hard to concentrate.
He came good late in the season, when the first Godd-to-Ess rumours surfaced - perhaps that's when he made his decision?
