Goddard

Watters changes his tune more often than an FM radio.

Couple this with the "we deserve top pick" rationale, and you'd think he doesn't even know which way is up.

Scott Gumbleton was a #2 pick, going by such analogy, does this mean we should expect a similar return for his departure?

Admit it Watters, you lost a big fish. Just be up front about it already.

I would have thought Kozi and other Saints players on good coin would be of more concern than Goddard..

Kosi isn't on good coin now, our highest paid player is Riewoldt who is only on around 500-600k with his backended contract.

"He's played wing, he's played as a defender, he's played as a high forward and he's played as an inside mid because I want to challenge him to win contested ball and balance his game out.

"I think he's played some really selfless roles this year. A lot of times his work inside of stoppages releases a lot of our other players so he's been more selfless'' Watters said.

At least Watters doesn't need Bomber Thompson to hold his hand like Hird.

What is that article supposed to mean?

It says to me that Goddard didn't like being challenged to do the hard yards as an inside mid and wants to play a soft outside midfield role so went where soft outside mids are all the rage.

No, it sounds like Watters admired Goddard's ability to set aside selfish acts and sacrifice his own game for the slowing plodders around him.

Goddard was challenged, playing his hand in all areas of the field. However, there is only so much 'challenging' you can do before a player realizes you're nuts and leaves a sinking ship while he still can.

Thank your ex-greatest ever St Kilda coach of the modern era for showing him the light one year in advance.

I'm sure Bomber...sorry I mean Hirdy will know how to use Goddard and not challenge him.

As for our sinking ship we beat you by over 70 points last time around, so if we're sinking then you must be already on the seabed.

..and Kosi is on 500k due to the optional year clause in his contract - 2nd highest paid Saint?

Where did you get that?

He might have been on that earlier in his career but he would probably be on less now, he is on the veterans list anyway so only half his salary is included in the salary cap.

You keep harping on about beating the Dons by 70pts Plugger. I was at the game - it was Lenny and your older brigade that were your best players. Where will they be in 2 years? Geez - Goddard and Ball would have been handy at the time Lenny retires..hmmm? Essendon has more upside. I also notice you carry on about your young players winning the last two games of the season...against...GWS (lol) and a Carlton team which lost interest because they couldn't make the 8...

Goddard didn't even play in that Essendon game you muppet and our younger players played a big part in that win and we would have beaten Collingwood too if the umpires weren't so biased towards you.

We have plenty of upside with our younger players, if you expect us to drop away then you will be sadly disappointed.

I didn't mention Goddard being at the Essendon game - learn to read L-E-N-N-Y...

HAHAHAHA - CLASSIC PLUGGER!!! ANOTHER CRACK AT THE UMPIRES - WHAT A MUPPET!!!

So what's Laidley doing? Holding his c-ck?

Out of all this one things clear, Goddards got a big set of balls to make such a publicly dramatic change at this stage of his career.

So it takes balls to earn a whole lot more money doing the same Job somewhere else? Balls woulda been to stay at the saints for less and back himself in to earn more money at the end of his career being a one club player.

No mate, take the emotion out it. The easy option was to earn almost as much as captain with your mates, while never leaving his comfort zone.
Gutsy move to go to a new club where he'll be on trial all over again, if it was solely for the coin he'd have taken up GWS's big offer last year.

He went to the highest Victorian bidder so it was all for coin whilst staying in his home state. And it wasn't almost as much essendon went far above any offer we put forward. The brave choice would've been to put his team first and stay on for less. Don't try and make him out to be some kind of brave hero when he's not. He's a mercenary plain and simple.

800k is the correct price for 2009 and 2010 form 300k for 2011 and 2012. He definitely went for coin as the Saints are at long odds like Essendon to win the flag. All the jumper grabbing and one club rubbish he spruiked is now embarrassing. Saints V Ess very early in 2013 will be a much hyped game.

How would he earn more being a lifetime Saints player than he will after a stint at Essendon? Where would he earn this one club money from? Grant Thomas?

This is more about your Essendon hatred than anything to do with Goddard. A bit sad how much it clouds your judgement and forms your opinions.

No 800k is worth every cent for his 2010 form. If he gets back to that then you have had a win - 800k is overs on 2012 form. Your opinion is this is incorrect?

You do understand how FA works?

You have to pay overs, but it costs you no picks or trades.

So yes he will be over paid, but we have just recruited a gun for nothing. (plus the coin will be made up from delisting cloggers like Lonergan, Monfries, Slattery), so win/win.

Cant see how having a bunch of list cloggers is a win-win. Being able to easily make cap room for Goddard by cleaning out players you were going to clean out anyway, is nothing to brag about. For the price of one Goddard you could have got two equally good players, only younger and with more upside and on shorter contracts.

I don't think it is overs if he finds his best form. He may have been stale the last 2 years.

We're not paying him for his 2012 form. We're paying him for his 2013 form. And until we see that the argument is moot.
