Goddard

Cant see how having a bunch of list cloggers is a win-win. Being able to easily make cap room for Goddard by cleaning out players you were going to clean out anyway, is nothing to brag about. For the price of one Goddard you could have got two equally good players, only younger and with more upside and on shorter contracts.
You honestly believe Essendon acquiring Goddard without having to part with any picks or players is somehow a bad result for the club?

I don't think it is overs if he finds his best form. He may have been stale the last 2 years.

As mentioned, I don't expect him to play to or above the money we have paid him. That is a premium that is required to ensure Saints can't match the offer and get us a player without having to trade picks or players that we just don't have anyway.

It is the nature of free agency. If you can make the cap space and are aiming for success, it is a no-brainer.

I am agreeing with you - I think he is a great get and a win for Essendon. My opinion is you would want greater out put than the Saints recieved in 2012 for 800k. He is capable of being a top 10 player again.

700 - 487 possessions - something has happened. Has been on a down hill slide since the drawn grand final.

He was probably a top 3 player in the comp after 2010. Despite being well below that since, for what ever reasons, he has still been a good player. Players of his ability don't just lose it. Barring injury, he will be a very good player for Essendon, and more importantly fills a big need for us.

Umm... the "win", here, is getting rid of the list cloggers for someone very good.

Gold.

That pretty much shows how Mufassa's anti-Essendon agenda clouds his judgement.

LOL - clouded judgement because I laughed at an Essendon poster saying Jetta and Hooker for Goodard was a fair trade? Jetta was terrible this year and Hooker's 2nd half of the year was not much better. If you still think that was a fair trade then it is not my judgement that is clouded.

You called Monfries a list clogger yet his year was as good as Jetta's.

Yes and he also thinks we could have simply gotten two much younger and better players with more upside for the same price. Clearly doesn't understand the concept of how FA works.
Well, Collingwood apparently have close to $1M in the cap to fit Tippett in, so we'll see if they can manage it.

Ball was a different situation to Goddard, he wasn't getting enough opportunities under Lyon and wasn't guaranteed a spot in our best 22 so left for a club where he would.

Goddard was given every opportunity at St Kilda and was guaranteed a spot in our best 22 but took it for granted and coasted in the last couple of years. Maybe he was carrying injuries or just isn't up to it anymore but his attitude was terrible for a senior player. Watters was right to say that he has been mediocre the last 40 games and it's why a lot of Saints supporters aren't that unhappy to see him go.

St Kilda haven't been childish in all this, Goddard has been. He's acted like a spoilt brat since we lost back to back GFs. The rest of our players have pulled up their socks and gotten on with it, Goddard continued to sulk, do the bare minimum and then had the audacity to demand top dollar from us. St Kilda gave him a fair offer based on his recent performances but that wasn't good enough for him so he bailed and took the easy money at Essendon.

He's gone to the right place though, Essendon supporters will hail him as the messiah if he strings half a dozen lazy touches together across half back without getting his hands dirty.

Disagree.

The guy thinks of himself as a midfielder, yet had to wait until Rd 18 to get 'his turn' in there.

I think that game he had 33 disp, 9 tackles, 5 clearances, 10 contested possessions.

'Opportunity' is exactly the relevant word here, which is probably why Hird mentioned it, and his manager mentioned.

Sure the money is handy, but the Saints invited him to test the market, and when you have an opposition coach telling you 'of course you get to play in the midfield'

I can see how it all happened to be honest...

700 - 487 possessions - something has happened. Has been on a down hill slide since the drawn grand final.

He injured his hip Rd 1 v the Cats in 2011, pretty much been injured since the very game you're talking about...

Carried it for a year, got surgery which saw him on crutches for 8 weeks, and subsequently a slow start to 2012.

I'm still angry that he and Ross (?) decided the best thing was to play through it instead of getting it operated on when it first happened. Would of been back half way through 2011, in a limited capacity granted, but at least he would of had no surgery end of year.....and it would of only affected 12 months of his footy, rather than nearly 2 years.

For those comparing his stats with 2010, this year he has been subjected to playing forward, team roles, head to head roles and heavy tags as the coach 'sent him back to school' like many others who had forgotten to play accountable one on one football.

Which is OK, but it certainly impacted his stats, and probably why he came 4th in the B&F as his coach knew he was playing as directed.

So instead of having of give up Hooker, or Jetta, or any other good player we might have, we're just allowed to get Goddard for basically nothing?

This free agency thing sounds lovely.

Until clubs come knocking on guys like Stanton and Ryders FA door?

FA giveth, but it also taketh away.

Plus the fact you guys made the Grand Final in 2010, meaning you played 25 games compared to the just 20 games that Goddard was able to play this year.

Although I guess saying someone has gone from 700 disposals to 487 disposals looks a lot worse than saying someone has dropped from 28.4 disposals per game to 24.4.

^ Who would want those guys anyway? One is an inconsistent, front running hack who can't handle a tag and the other is a lazy plodder who has never lived up to his potential. I guess we can be disappointed in the fact that they won't ever go anywhere else.

You've missed my point; Before he was at Essendon he was an unatainable A grader, yet now he is here, he is an overpaid hack. That's pretty much 'the Essendon effect' on Mufassa right there.

What is wrong with you? Where have I ever called him an over paid hack? His form of 2012 does not warrent 800k - his form of 2010 does. His actions in 2013 will see if he is over paid or paid correctly.

True. The comp has changed.

At least you get some compensation. Would hurt more, if you were pushing for success in the next 2-3 years, which no offense, I don't think the Saints will be.

Can you not understand that FA means you pay a premium $$ so as not to have to give up picks or players. It is unlikely Goddar will perform to the $ we have paid, that is the compromise for giving up nothing. How can you not understand this?

No offence taken, we have to see how our youth development goes for sure.

We are in the unique position though where we have quite a bit of talent in the 20-22 age bracket that haven't played many games due to the last coaches approach, so their bodies are ready....they just need game time.

Hopefully that allows us to move back into contention a bit earlier than people anticipate, given their age compliments the likes of other mature age pickups like Saad, Milera, Dunell.

We won't be a team of babes like other clubs attempting to push back up.

As for my football knowleage and over rating North players - I picked Essendon to finish 11th in 2012 and the Roos to finish 7th. Maybe I did over rate us :D - but I do know how good your list is!

So you have the ability to predict injury?
Please, tell me more.

Which is why a lot of the sky-is-falling nonsense is just plain silly.

It will change the list management landscape dramatically, though. The mindset of "stay for success and less money" has to assert its dominance at certain clubs in order to move forward.

If as being bandied around the compensation could effectively net you Caddy, this may be in StKilda's best interests long term.
