Goddard

And you assume Geelong offered him significantly less than Essendon. Waiting for proof...

Sad fact is that nobody wants to be anywhere near Geelong. Ablett, Thompson, Boak, Dangerfield. Have fun with Jared Rivers... :D

Enjoy nursing a 30+yr old Goddard through seasons at 650k-700k (suggested on here) when clearly past his best and heading towards twilight years...

Geelong is clearly concentrating on rebuilding so paying Goddard such a fee over 4 years would make absolutely no sense. With the emerging young talent down here I'm glad they didn't do it. Rivers would be a better fit for the current side (losing a key defender this year), Boak would have been nice, Caddy will be worth a try. Goddard is simply not an important player. He's a floating utility who can't take a key defensive role or play genuine mid because of the ease ANY club can tag him out of the game. Your club is foolish. First trying to pull out Geelong's footy department, now this??

Bottom line.. your list is aging and after missing finals in 2012, DESPERATE!

But hey, a club that rates itself as highly as yours, who has made 2 finals appearances in the last 6 years (both losses), it's no wonder they're clutching at straws. No hope.

If you'd told me a year ago that he would leave, i would have been devastated.
But now i'm not so fussed.
It sucks but it's part of the modern game and the Saints just happen to be losing out this time. No doubt the time will come where we snaffle a player from another club via free agency.

I will not boo him, in fact i will wish him all the best nearly every game of the season, except against us of course. Thanks for the memories BJ.

We contended this year until we fell apart.

Beating up on minnows isn't 'contending'. The only reason Essendon were 8 and 1 is you played sides such as GWS, GC, Port, WB and the Brisbane Lions.

You didn't fall apart, you were just shown up for the mediocre side you are.

And damn near beat your boys with half a side, in Adelaide. Your point?

For what it's worth, I think BJ is a great get, and he has been one of my favourite players of the past 5 years. I'm stoked we have him, we'll have to see how it plays out.

Ball was a sensationsal mid but was only quarter the player he would of been had he not had chronic groin problems which was the point where Collingwood picked him up and the fact he sat a large part of the grand final on the bench. Collingwood was prepared to give him a chance and good luck to him.

Anyway you will see quickly in crunch games why Goddard isn't all he's cracked up to be.

Like a grand final....

This sets the Saints back, 2-3 years. Bottom 4 for mine next year.

yes definetly. one half back flanker surely makes the difference.

now i see why collingwood bent over and took it from not only trav but all of his extended family, so they wouldnt bottom out next year.

fair dinkum

You do realise we have the option to match whatever Essendon is paying him but we don't want to so what does that tell you.
You stuffed up your salary cap by overpaying spuds like Kosi and literally can't match it.

That's what it comes down to. You're getting rid of Goddard to keep Kosi. You'd be a million times better off freeing up that salary cap space except that nobody in their right mind would trade for that spud.

Absolute nonsense.

I think, in all seriousness, they've realised that if we keep sitting on our hands and wait for the core of our list to hit the "right age" then the commodity of Watson will be wasted. If we can retain the core of what we think can push for a flag in the 2015 region while still having a damn good crack while Jobe's in his prime then the club will be doing its best to lift itself out of the mire.

That's if, if, if, but, er... if this works out then the motivating factor is most definitely giving Watson the support he desperately lacks.

I don't know if Goddard is a guy who can give support to Watson though???
Goddard is a great player, but he is much better on the outside, he rarely wins contested possesions or clearances and he is a liability when starting in the centre square.
To me, when you already have Stanton and Heppell, why would you get Goddard??

Essendon need genuine midfielders. Genuine ball getters and accumulators. A guy like Brad Sewell.

Why in your view is it behind him?

Because at 27 going on 28 yo I think his best football is past him. 2011/12 he was no where near what he was back on 09/10.I don't believe he has much left given he's been a warrior for the saints and his body has been put through the ringer. Maybe a year or two of reasonable footy left. Would take him in a flash at Richmond but not on the coin he's being offered by the bombers and not for 4 years. Just my opinion.

Why refer to a game from 2 years ago?? What's he done since then?? Not much, and by next year he's two and a half years older, playing in a far poorer team (Essendon) than the Saints in 2010. The variables don't look great in this equation I'm afraid.

Noone on our salary cap would be on anything large except Riewoldt. Kosi would be on next to nothing. If we were near our salary cap maximum i'd be suprised.
