Goddard

This sets the Saints back, 2-3 years. Bottom 4 for mine next year.

Wishful thinking.

We had some of our best wins this year when Goddard was suspended, the last couple of years he has all but been a passenger so we won't miss him as much as some people think.

I won't be happy to see him go but I don't want us to pay overs for him like Essendon are looking at doing, on recent performances he isn't worth what they are offering. The chance for us to free up some salary cap space and get some good draft picks will probably be better for us in the long term.

This is free agency. You don't get a player like Goddard for nothing, so I'm happy to overpay on the salary a little bit. If we have to give up some cap space, then so be it. I reckon this kind of deal will become more the norm. There will be people judging this contract who may find their club paying similar in the future.

We also get the best junior in the country. This could be a big offseason for the Bombers.

just part of the game now,

dont expect saints fans to be happy about it tho and rightfully so. they should boo the hell out of him
most i know, including myself, would like him to stay, but not at the price we're hearing. if he can get it, good luck to him.
if he stays, good on him. it ain't a luke ball situation, or a ross lyin situation. don't think there'll be much angst, all parties are playing it fairly.

If it's true that Saints have only offered him 475K, then he goes with my blessing.

Terrible move on our behalf, I'd be insulted by that as well.

Get the feeling we're a bit in la-la land, we don't want the FA market to dictate or inflate BJ's value, but we're deluded enough to think it won't dictate or inflate everyone elses?

I don't know if Goddard is a guy who can give support to Watson though???
Goddard is a great player, but he is much better on the outside, he rarely wins contested possesions or clearances and he is a liability when starting in the centre square.
To me, when you already have Stanton and Heppell, why would you get Goddard??

Essendon need genuine midfielders. Genuine ball getters and accumulators. A guy like Brad Sewell.

I think the idea is to give Essendon a greater spread of talent. A team tags Goddard then Stanton and Zaharakis run free and hopefully prevent the situation that happened in the second half of the season where Zaharakis got injured which allowed teams to put all their stopping efforts into Satanton and caused his output to drop dramatically.

You will be surprised by Heppell's ball winning ability imo.

BJ also has the reputation of being one of the best trainers at the Saints.

Word coming out of Dons this year was that some lacked the approach required at this level in their preparation, he'll be great for showing them what discipline is, what is required if you want to be in contention....

Will be a great leader at your footy club....

So you think this puts us behind GWS, Gold Coast, the Bulldogs and Melbourne? We took 6 wins from those teams this year with an average winning margin of 68 points. Didn't realise BJ was that good, we should have offered him 1.2 million over 5 years!

Quality post.

No club wants to feel they are being bullied into a situation.

Who knows, you may match the terms.

Sad fact is that nobody wants to be anywhere near Geelong. Ablett, Thompson, Boak, Dangerfield. Have fun with Jared Rivers... :D

Poor us. We'll have to console ourselves with our triple premiership players.

If Carlton can make a big bid for Cloke then I'm surprised they aren't making a major play for Goddard. Reeks of last year when they failed to trade and thought natural improvement would suffice.

I want to see him to go Carlton. Carlton need someone who isn't bruise free and someone who doesn't go missing extremely often.

Wash your mouth out.

No other player at St Kilda (with the exception of Hayes and Riewoldt) have busted their guts for their club as much over the past 4 years as Goddard. Those saying he is a soft half back flanker or outside player are showing either a lack of knowledge for the game or bitter Saints supporters burying their heads in the sand.

Anyone with half a brain knows Goddard was injured last year. No excuses this year except for the fact that it must be hard to get motivated when you know you have lost your chance for a flag at a club you have bled for and the rebuild has started.

If this deal goes ahead it will be a win/win for both clubs, help for Watson, Stanton and Zaharakis at Essendon and a high draft pick (possibly 13) to help the rebuild at St Kilda as a lot of stars finish up over the next 2-3 years.

Yeah, the cats are definitely on the improve...

So the weapon was your excuse this year, when you are just play shyte next year who will Hirdy blame then when you bomb out and miss finals?
And didn't you watch the VFL Grand Final? Or the 10 debutantes we played this season? Geelong have nothing to worry about.

Still shocks me how little clue people have about opposition players.

Bruise free? Only averaged one less contest possession this year than Jude Bolton, Jordan Lewis and David Mundy....even with his form a bit down while he recovered from massive hip surgery prior to this season.
