Anyway, could be a great get by Essendon but I would've thought targeting a Caddy would've suited their needs more. Full credit to Jobe on winning the Brownlow but I think it highlighted how weak Essendon are through the midfield. Besides the first 6 weeks of the season where Stanton dominated, the dons had no one taking votes off Jobe. He was a one man band. They need quality midfielders. Goddard is not that. The only way they can justify throwing that sort of money at Goddard is him becoming a quality inside mid. We've seen O'Keefe transform himself at Sydney so it's not completely impossible but I would say quite unlikely.

We don’t have to trade anything for Goddard, it won’t have any bearing on whether we can or can’t get Caddy. The issue there is our lack of a first round pick to trade.

Its a great pick-up... he can be a genuine top 10 player in the league and has proven himself in some very big finals. A new environment may also help lift his game, and would probably be the best thing for him.

I think paying overs for him at this stage is probably ok for them also... they really haven't made that leap into having a raft of A graders who will demand massive amounts, they have players with potential but paying overs to get someone to the club now is probably the best time for this kind of trade.

I disagree. In terms of being over-rated, I think he gets the props he deserves. I dont think much people give him 'superstar' status. If he was more consistent he could be, but one thing is for sure...He can be a game changer. He took the grand final by the balls and nearly dragged the rest of the sainters over the line. Hasnt been as nearly as damaging as he was in 2010 lately, but is definitely a great pick-up for Essendon or whoever gets him.

I believe if there is anyone that reckons there weren't things going on behind the scenes that pushed him out the door at St Kilda they are kidding themselves. If all he has left for is the reported $675-$725K per year (plus an extra year), then that is not much more than the money we supposedly offered him and I have no doubt if there was such a small difference in the money on offer, he would have stayed, so something has gone on in the last week or so that has made him feel like had no genuine option but to leave, IMO, if Essendon's offer is correct. The word we are hearing is that St Kilda dramatically reduced their offer to him in the last week, presumably because we'd prefer he leave, so that we can get the draft pick and extra salary cap space to go after others.

The fact that Essendon's offer is reportedly "significantly higher", at $675-$725K, than St Kilda's final offer was, is pretty alarming, considering a couple of weeks ago it was revealed pretty emphatically that we had offered him $650K per year for 3 years (which is not significantly lower per year, especially after tax). It was also reported a couple of weeks ago that that $650K offer would make him the "highest paid player at the club", but in this latest article they said that St Kilda's final offer would only make him "one of the highest paid players at the club". Going from "the highest paid", to "one of the highest paid" is a hell of a turnaround in a week or two and would only happen if we slashed his final offer, if true.

As far as I'm concerned, if something like this has gone on, and I believe something pretty dramatic would have to have for him to have left his great mates and a club he clearly loved and wanted to stay at and possibly captain, for so little more money (unless Essendon have offered him a lot more than is being reported, or have given him a big 3rd party deal on the side), this just continues on from Luke Ball and Ross Lyon leaving in the previous three years, after clearly feeling they weren't given the respect they felt they deserved from the club. Both of course went on to do really well at their new clubs and I have little doubt Goddard will too, if he ends up at Essendon. Reports also had Robert Harvey very unhappy with the lack of respect he was showed when he applied for the coaching role at the end of 2011.

The club of course trots out the line of "well we wanted them to stay and we put a contract in front of them, blah, blah, blah", but how many times do they think we're going to swallow that and not notice that a pattern is emerging here, if every year or so someone who has meant a lot to the club and has played a big part in any relative success, takes off in acrimonious circumstances?

I'll probably be labelled a "traitor" for saying this, but I don't care, because if it's true (and we're not actually doing this with the plan that we'll match the offer and then try to trade him) then I'd rather it come out and be dealt with, rather than have it get defended and swept under the carpet and continue, and push more good people and quality talent out the door.

Swan winning the brownlow also highlighted how weak Collingwood's midfield is. Also, Bartel and Ablett winning the brownlow also highlighted how weak Geelong's midfield was in that period. Couple of Premierships was a fluke no doubt. Some people have no idea do they....

Both Watson and Goddard will be 29 in 2014, it'll be a pretty short window if thats when it opens. Goddard will be a great pickup for the Bombers, but you don't pick up a 27 year old of his caliber expecting results 2 years down the road, his impact will be expected to be immediate. I think without the injuries and consistent performance throughout the year by your key players Essendon can make top 4, the key will just be pacing the players. 2 years in a row Essendon have exploded out of the blocks only to fall away horribly at the end of the year, if Hird can get the balance right there's no reason Essendon can't play quality football all the way through the year and be there to compete at the pointy end.

Bloody oath, or else something is rotten behind the scenes in "upper management", or wherever, if we're losing all these "quality people" that we supposedly want to keep, year after year.

That doesn't happen if it's a really brilliantly run place, where everyone is treated really well and wants to stay, or if they want to leave, for better opportunities or whatever, it is done with goodwill and not acrimoniously.

It will be very interesting to hear what comes out in the next year or so from Goddard (who has been very quiet on all this). I expect he will stay quiet initially, but if he starts being branded a "traitor" or whatever, I think the actual truth will start to come out then, to set the record straight, like it eventually did from Ross Lyon and Luke Ball.

He isn't a hack, but even Essendon supporters have to admit that his last two years have been poor compared to the rest of his career. He gets tagged out of games far too easily.

Also i don't believe he will fix any of Essendon's weaknesses. He is a good pickup because you wont lose anything to get him, the salary cap space wont matter much because you don't have much in the way of promising youngsters you need to sign.

It will be interesting to see what position the Bombers play him in, as his favoured role as loose on the half back flank is already occupied by a few players at Essendon.

Part of the deal of him coming over was time in the midfield. Remember that Stanton and Watson are our key play makers- You can't tag three players at once.
