Goddard

The cap has to be paid so its either pay Goddard or pay another player. I don't think people quite understand this.

It will only become an issue for Essendon if a quality player leaves because he feels he is getting underpaid.

Would be ironic if the compensation St. Kilda get, lands Caddy. Demographic and role played, Caddy would be a bitter fit at Essendon than Goddard.

The changes in the TPP are as follows:
2011 - $8.21 million per club (final year of current agreement)
2012 - $8.787 million per club (7 percent increase)
2013 - $9.139 million per club (5 percent increase)
2014 - $9.632 million per club (5.4 percent increase)
2015 - $9.92 million per club (3 percent increase)
2016 - $10.2 million per club (3 percent increase)

It doesn't matter who is coming or going.

$8,870,000 x 4 = $35,120,000

$35,120,000/$2,900,000 = 12.11

I don't think we will have any problems retaining the players on our list but what will be annoying is if a free agent becomes available next year who would fit perfectly at the club and we can't table an adequate offer because of the Goddard contract.

demographic, LOL. I think a player at his peak who fits into the demographic hole we have is just fine, thanks all the same

I think it's a good pick up for Essendon. Probably one year too many but that is how you get players to leave you either pay them way more than their current club or offer premiership chance in the next year or two.

It is interesting that the compensation draft picks are handed out at the end of the trade period. It means you can't use the pick as part of any trade negotiations on other players because who is going to trade for a question mark. And trading for other players effects what the compo pick will be.

This is the first move in the great free agency experiment. From here the dominoes will fall.

I won't say good luck to Goddard because that might mean Essendon winning, but well done on getting paid more we'll see how it goes.

Goddard was at his peak 2 years ago. With his body having OP, a recent shoulder operation and turning 28, he is past his peak years. He'll be collecting his super payout by the time Essendon are contending for a Top 4 position, at that time, Caddy will be approaching his peak years as a midfielder.

I expect the salary cap won't maintain it's current level, but I still make the point that it's a fair chunk of the cash.

I think you are going to be maxed out as far as bringing another top liner to the club is concerned.

Does anyone find it strange that the reported offer from St Kilda was ~$500k x 3 years and the deal Essendon have offered is ~$800k x 4 years?

Did they really need to offer an extra $1.7m to get the deal done?

You are being reasonable this isn't the place for that non-sense.

Seems like Goddard was at his peak in 2010? Certainly not saying he won't get there again...but you can hardly claim that he is currently at his 'peak' unless it be some weak speculation that he will get there purely because he's 28.

Too much money for a player that will be 28 in May

Is making over 1 million dollars a year to much for someone who will be 29 in May (Gary Ablett)? I'm not comparing the two based on skill, but being talented doesn't mean your body will hold up longer.

I agree but sitting on your hands waiting for something better to come along can sometimes be worse than doing something.

It's 7% of the cap. Probably less when you factor in third-party deals.

However will we manage.

Thanks.:thumbsu:

7.46% of the salary cap or 1 in 13.4

It's still a decent chunk.

Many players take less than market odds to stay with their club. Certain Collingwood and Geelong players over last few years come to mind.

Interesting.

To be fair, Geelong and Collingwood have been able to dangle the very realistic carrot of a premiership/s in front of those players when asking them to take far less than their market rate. And there’s still exceptions (Mumford, Ablett, Davis)

Not sure St Kilda right now is in the same boat.

Even with these new FA rules, I still reckon success will be the no.1 lure for most players, not money. I think Goddard sees Essendon as at least having as much chance as St Kilda re success over the new years – his manager has said as much.

In a few years when Geelong and Collingwood are down the ladder, not sure they’ll find it as easy to retain players if they’re being offered far more money by other clubs.
