If you take into account their age, then i'm not so sure it is such a huge diffference. If Goddard was going to Hawks, Swans, Pies or WCE, I think it is a great move due to their being 100% mix for the flag. No doubt on these teams..a lot of doubt on the Bombers.

I'm not so sure the Bombers will get a flag in the next 1-2 years which means his time will be up. I know he has signed for 4 years but bloody hell....30+ (May) during the 2015 season and all he will be doing is raking in his pay check.

In terms of salary I rationalize it as mcveigh, monfries and slattery = Goddard and 2 draftees or rookie upgrades.
We may not be able to front load cos of Hurley, Ryder and Stanton's deals, but smart cap structuring should hold us in good stead

The Saints have ummed and aarghed publicly but it is all a game. They have managed him out with their low ball offers earlier this season...since then it has been a farce...they'd rather the pick.

If passion for the club was all a player needed then Henry Slattery would be on a 10 year deal. Reality is that Monfries is a fringe player at Essendon who has shown little to no improvement over the past few seasons and is a one dimensional lead up forward.

You may have an over inflated idea of his ability as he usually plays well against Carlton.

Monfries is a good player, one of my favourites. But if he wants more opportunity and port are offering him 1.6mil over 4 years then his time has come, he can go, with the blessing of most bombers on here. We have at least 4 others capable of playing the monfries role (nick obrien will make it his own next year) ideally we get some kind of compo, but thems the breaks

Are Bomber fans really saying Monfries is fringe? He has averaged 19-20 games per year for the last 4 years and has reached peak age. Monfries best year might still be ahead of him when we know Goddards very best year is mostl likely behind him.

Goddard is a great get...but losing Monfries due to Goddard lessons the the net gain affect. Plug one leak, open up another.
