Anyone think this might be a new strategy for clubs. Wait for an aging champion to turn 28 and pass him on for a first rounder and a new ten year player. Bombers TBH have done ok here but Saints have done very well assuming their strategy is a rebuild.

Chris Pelkin is in charge of list management from Hawthorn who have been able to pay unders for their players, they won the 2008 flag at 93% of their cap. This is his stamp to say no to players asking for more than the club ranks them. It's a good strategy, you don't win flags over paying players.
Goddard leaves strictly for cash, but pretty much abandons the Saints. Riewoldt must hate the guy now, I feel for Roo here who has stuck through some s*** times, been denied the flag twice fully realising his flag dreams are gone but still fronts up to play his best and be a loyal person to the club. Hayes must hate his guts.

TBH they were trying to keep him at Moorabin. As an independent I cannot see how he had a better year than many of those listed beneath him. It's a bit like them announcing that he may get the captaincy next year. All avenues were being exhausted to retain him at St Kilda.
So they purposely rigged a BnF count all in some sort of desperate attempt to keep him? Pretty pathetic if true.

Or maybe Goddard isn't as bad as everything seems to think he is now.

Agree with all of that. And what is it with the money anyway. If you get offered an extra 100k at their salary range, you lose almost half of it anyway to tax. So big deal, you get an extra 50-60k per year but damage your overall brand and never quite belong to a club post footy. Look at Camporeale! Which club will Goddard want to belong to post footy for the next 40 years. An extra 50k for 2-4 years aint worth it when you are on big dollars anyway.

Win for the saints. Time to rebuild anyway. If the rumors are correct, 800k a season? Over the odds IMO.

Look at Diesel.

I was speaking to Saints player 2 weeks ago and asked whether Goddard would sign. He said he was unsure and rated it a real 50/50. BJ had indicated to him that the Saints had offered lowish 600s over 3 years but that he'd had 4 year offers from other clubs at around the 800 mark. If the Saints had offered a 4th year at the money that was already on the table then the deal would have been done.

Interestingly, on SEN this afternoon, Mark Robinson said that he'd heard that Goddard's management approached the Saints last week with the proposition of a 4th year based on his performance in the 3rd year of the contract. The Saints said 3 years or nothing and, even more interestingly, actually slightly reduced their final offer.

The final reduction sounds strange. If true, then I think the Saints like the look of a first round pick...

What's more, Watters was pretty adamant about 5 or 6 weeks back that the Saints are not under cap pressure. He admitted that the Saints were under significant cap pressure last year and somewhat so this year due to back ended deals but that next year is a different kettle of fish entirely. This makes sense considering Riewoldt will only be on half the money in 2013 that he was on this year. However, Watters said earlier in the year that it will be difficult to retain all players and that someone could get pushed out. These appear to be contradictory statements, however, perhaps he was just alluding to the fact that his assessment of certain players' worth was less than what they could get elsewhere?

Man, how did this shit hack player (or so Saints fans are now trying to tell us) finish 4th in the Saints B&F, above their captain?
You got a decent player at the rates based on his 2010 form.
Finishing a distant fourth in the B&F of the club that's on the slide and didn't even make the finals is nothing to write home about.

You might think 50-60k a year extra isnt much but over 4 years it equates to 200-240k which makes a significant difference to the bank balance so its definately not something you would want to give up to easily if you have an opportunity to earn that at the back end of your career.
Also do you really think players care these days about damaging their own brand or never belonging to a club after their career is over? I am tipping not many do but i think theres another reason why Goddard left other than the money and that is becasue Stkildas premiership window is now closed with the current list theyve got and Goddard would be thinking that Essendon are more closer to a flag than what Stkilda are which wouldve have swayed him in Essendons direction as well

Monfries out Goddard in is surely a win. His age is a worry but I think he will be good for at least three of the four.

No, but it certainly shows he's far from a guy who just 'dishes up tripe' as has been suggested.

I'm glad you are ! If not we may have to dip into the "FTF"

That $6,000,000 raised is quite a bit but I think we'll be holding on to all of it.

Just checked the website and I see the Flight Plan has raised $778,451 (wow). Is Goddard signing for a set amount or just what the Flight Plan raises each year?

Actually, when Pelchan was list manager at Hawthorn, they offered and had accepted a $600k per year offer to a 28yo Ryan O’Keefe. Pretty much exactly what Essendon have done with Goddard.

Had FA existed then, he would have been a Hawk. Only thing that stopped it was being unable to satisfy Sydney with a trade.

Pelchan and everybody else does what they think is right re the players that are available at any given time.

Been done plenty of times

Martin Leslie beating Nathan Buckley in 1993 because Bux wasn't staying so they didn't want him to get the BnF as he was walking out the door
Chris Judd 2008 at Carlton to convince the public his trade was worth it

Too tired to think of others, but it's a big list of "suspicious" BnF results

nice try pal but if they really were going to go to the trouble of rigging their b 'n' f they really must consider BJ to be a top notch player who they can't afford to loose-which of course he isnt
hes a d-grade half back flank whose barely worth a rookie contract

Ahh, good, another hit for the site ! We both know Evan's is seriously loaded, tin rattles just 'aint our thing. All covered, no need to sell our soul interstate :D

Remember on the footy show where he showed a letter with one dollar from a seven year old to make him stay. Why would he show that makes him look like a w****r. The saints are found the right thing team first meaning no marquee players anymore under Watters

Oops doing the right thing

I remember last time Goddard played for us against essendon and we got spanked they were all gloating that Goddard was a just a big soft outside sooky la la that couldn't handle a tag. Now he is on the essendon list and he is one of the most dominant players in the game again. Go figure.

I felt that pain also too brother.
do not care. after folling everton in the epl for the last 6 years ive realised its just a part of most sports. when mikel arteta went to arsenal i was almost in tears but now i just dont care.

no player is greater then the club

I still put him in my premier league dream team :P

But what does making Goddard finish 4th in the BnF actually achieve? If he won it, fair enough, maybe that would entice him to stay. Only thing I can think of is that it might get them a better compensation pick.

If they really wanted him to stay, all they had to do was give him a 4th year on his contract. Fair enough they didn't want to be held ransom by a player, but they can't now be disappointed about it. They had ample oppurtunity to secure him.

Potentially a better compensation pick. I don't think he could have cared any less if he'd won in terms of staying either. They wouldn't have rigged it (if at all) to make him stay, but to prove (on top of everything else) to the AFL that they deserve good compensation for him
