True of all recruiting decisions - "Goddard's only worth it if he plays well".But only if the pick is used wisely
Best to say pick 12/13 is a very good opportunity, for them.

It's money we are forced to spend. There's no holding onto it for next year, or using it on extra recruiters - have to spend between 95% & 100% of the salary cap (which is going up a few percent every year)Its all still money your club has in its pockets thats now gone, so if it couldnt have been used on coaching then it should have been used on better players. You now have a player to sit loose on the HBF, of which you already had players in that position. Would love to hear his reasoning for the move, has to be for money rather than success.
Worth a crack in a successful culture IMO.
Win Win Situation For St Kilda, And For Bombers,
Clubs like St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne are really going to struggle in free agency.....
the afl dose not want these sides winning grand finals,
thet want the carltons west coasts collingwood and hawthorn all the big pulling clubs to be up the top

Saints have played in two (three) GF's and a tonne of finals recently, Essendon has two EF embarrassments.
Maybe if he was going to Sydney, or Geelong, or Hawthorn etc.
I'm not sure what Kosi's contracts have been in the past but I doubt he would be on much now and wouldn't have stopped us from keeping Goddard if we wanted to match your offer. Ball left for more opportunities at Collingwood rather than more money.
.

I don't think it's about what St Kilda could have paid Goddard, more about what St Kilda thought was a fair deal, considering other players on the list and the projected worth of younger players on the list that are expected to improve, and by their own rights, earn more in seasons to come.A serious question (and apologies if it's been addressed and I missed it?) - what were kozi's recent and previous contracts worth in terms of approx money and years?? Had you farked off that C grader (trying to be kind) spud, could the saints have made better offers and kept ball and BJ instead of kozi???
If so, no one to blame but yourselves.
Ps. Re the cap, take out (and of course I'm speculating on these figures) monfries(400), Prismal (330), mcveigh (340), Dyson (260ish?), slattery(240), and poss lonergan (260??) and keep in mind essendon were already further below the cap than stkilda, seems like a risk worth taking to me. (non of those 6 are guaranteed best 22 by any stretch - most/poss all are not in our best side)
Time will tell of course, but BJ having an apparently disinterested year in 2012 = 24.4 disposals from a smart and penetrating user of the footy, and finishing 4th in their b&f....
Worth a crack in a successful culture IMO.

What does that say about your list then if he's fourth in your B&F?
By the way, when was the last time Essendon actually went out and 'got' a big name player still in his prime?
I am not against Essendon recruiting Goddard but the two scenarios are quite different. Collingwood were preliminary finalists with a glaring need for a ruckman before recruiting Jolly and even then they also got Luke Ball to fill another need. Essendon didn't make the finals last year. They aren't Goddard from a flag. From playing in September maybe but that is a hellof a long way from a premiership.yeah Essendon should have focused on recruiting a young player. I mean, look how recruiting Darren Jolly worked out for Collingwood.

Is anyone saying we are a Goddard from a flag?I am not against Essendon recruiting Goddard but the two scenarios are quite different. The Weapon will make sure that he won't be able to train. He'll have plenty of time to do his new job.How is Goddard going to fit training in now that he has a new job at Toll? Will he work Hird hours or normal people hours?

Does Goddard's last two years warrant so much excitement? Maybe a change of scenery will reinvigorate him. But the guy is 28 and I'd argue his best days behind him. Essendon don't look likely to challenge for a flag for a couple of years. Overall, I don't think Saints should be too upset over it
