Goddard

Goddard was pretty poor in 2011 when Ross Lyon was still there. There might have been a mental let down after losing back to back GFs which affected some of our players for a while but most of them have recovered from that whereas Goddard hasn't.
.
I suppose seeing as Scott Watters has also mentioned how poor Goddard has been in the last couple of years, then the compensation will probably only be a second round draft pick seeing as he has been ordianry for so long.

I take issue with you claiming that Goddard can't possibly assist us to a flag.
I didn't say that at all. The point was about the different positions of Collingwood at the end of 2009 to Essendon now. 2 of 3 PF and a SF performance in 4 straight finals appearances v not in the 8 and not able to win a final in years. Goddard will have to make more difference to Essendion than Jolly did to Collingwood and without Ball to assist in that task.

I was thinking about this this morning and I agree totally. Saying it is just money seems too simplistic - there has to be more to it

Knights moved for opportunity, Lynch for security in his last few years. Tippet wants to go back to Qld, Wellingham potentially back to WA. Etc.

Goddard has moved to another mid-table finishing side that plays at the same ground - for a bit more money. It's a touch curious.

Lynch jumps for another year = security;
Goddard does it = curious

Hmm.

Lynch may have found himself delisted and 31 going into 2014. Goddard is hardly in the same boat.

By the way people are carrying on, it sounds like he would certainly be in the same boat.

Win/win IMO. Saints don't have to pay overs for a disinterested player and Essendon gain a high quality player with skill and experience. Changing clubs might be good for Goddard and reinvigorate him.

Everybody was saying Ball was finished as a player at the end of his stint at St. Kilda: too slow, can't kick, etc. But this year has shown that he's possibly our most important midfielder in a group that includes the likes of Swan, Pendles, Beams and Thomas.

Plus it fills a need for them. The Bombers need silk in the midfield until Heppell grows bulk, consistency and ticker. Shutting down Stanton goes a long way to beating their midfield, having Goddard there ensures that at least one of them gets off the chain.

Now is it overs? Yeah, probably.

But the money has to go somewhere and I'm pretty sure Essendon would rather spend it on Goddard than on some of the spuds that inhabit their list.

Correct.

And I'd add the common sense logic that seems to be escaping most; that in order to pry lose a star player from the opposition, we have to pay overs. Thats the risk and burden you take.

Very happy with it myself.

How did we starve him of the opportunity of playing to the best of his ability?

Also we finished ahead of you on the ladder this year and beat you by 70 points last time so it's not like your prospects next year are any better than ours.

Mate, GWS and GC both finished below Melbourne, and they both have substantially better prospects.

The quality of our list, and our likely chances going forward are vastly superior to the Saints.

The size & length of the contract offered by essendon has the biggest influence on compensation, if 800k and four years doesnt equal first round pick then very little would.

How many people here wouldn't take up a new job in their field for more money?

Goddard is two years younger and much more sought after.

Lynch may have found himself delisted and 31 going into 2014. Goddard is hardly in the same boat.
But no guarantee that would be the case after Goddard's deal.

They both would've have contracts taking them to 30yo, and chose to go for a contract to take them to 31

I've really enjoyed reading the about face Carlton supporters have had about Goddard since Essendon nabbed him. "800k too much to pay for a soft half back" like they havn't had a thread every week for the past 2 years about how much they want to get Goddard to Carlton. Hell EVERY club would've loved to get Goddard, I would've been jumping for joy if he came to the pies, dunno why people think they can take the shine off Essendons coup by pretending he's not all that good.

Smartest man on bigfooty right here, your mum must be proud :thumbsu:

There’s nothing curious about it at all. It’s been mentioned approximately 7 million times in the media over the past week that Essendon offered him what he wanted: a 4 year deal and more money, against the Saints who absolutely refused to budge from their 3 year offer.

It’s the very definition of “security”.

Freo and GWS apparently made similar offers. He didn’t want to move interstate.

If any other Melbourne club had put a serious, competitive offer on the table, he may have ended up there. They didn’t – at least not in a timely fashion.

Well plenty of Collingwood supporters said that Cloke was poor this year too so if he left Collingwood under free agency then I'm sure you'd be happy with a second round draft pick.

There are other factors involved in determining the compensation pick but it would have to be a first round pick if other players like Scully and Phil Davis are worth a first round pick.

I don't see how it matters to other people what compensation pick we get though.

I think the difference in money between the two offers might be more than the media is reporting and Essendon also offered a 4 year contract as opposed to a 3 year contract which was probably also a deciding factor.

In your opinion, the way we finished the season compared to Essendon might suggest otherwise, Our last two wins were with mainly younger players too so our future isn't as bleak as people like to make out.

So what happens if he plays 150 for us, wins 5 B&Fs, but Watson gets hit by a bus & we still suck?

Has he then been a failure?

I just can't agree with the logic.
I guess if you spend as much as you will on Goddard and thereby don't spend it elsewhere and don't get far on field it will have been a failure but that is not what I've been talking about if you look at the posts. It was a pretty simple point in response to an irelevent analogy about Jolly and Collingwood. I actually said I wasn't againt the Goddard recruitment. It is just not justifiable with reference to Collingwood at all beauce the clubs were/are in different positions and in any case it wasn't just Jolly but also Ball that made the difference between PF losers and GF winners.

Disappointed we picked Goddard TBH. Upset, really upset. I mean why have we signed up this declining hack that will be lucky to get a game at your suburban footy team? We will be MUCH closer to a flag retaining players like Henry Slattery, Dyson, Lonergan etc. And to top it off we are letting off the future superstar who will become the best player in the AFL, Josh Caddy go to supremely talented teams like Geelong, St. Kilda or North. Essendon are screwed for the next 10 years folks, accept it
