If I was them I’d just be targeting CCJ and maybe go Gibcus in the draft.
the names you would really want are just going to cost too much. I guess the dream is an Aliir type comes available and willing to go there but they are bloody hard to come by.
They should throw a huge contract offer at jordan dawson and offer up pick 19 to sydney to get it done..he would be excellent for them. If they could trade pick 5 for a late top 10 pick and another 1st they could also target CCJ and still grab a top 10 kid..maybe go for the best tall in the draft. It could really help balance their list

Jack Payne, Callum Coleman-Jones and Jack Billings would be handy to the suns. Maybe Chol as well.

I'd trade into next years draft. Maybe ask Adelaide or the Hawks or another club to give them a future first for their current first. THis way, getting a player for a pick becomes next years problem. Unless they can somehow convince Cerra to come to the Gold Coast.

GC has elite top-end talent already, what they need right now is maturity and performance to ensure their high value draft picks stay at the club.

If they can pick up 2-3 solid B/B+ players with pick 5 + extras to ensure they make the 8 next round, that's most likely the best play.

I'd aim for players like Breust, Sidebottom, Grimes that are down on value, but are likely to be quite durable even in the twilight years in their careers while offering leadership.

You’re not getting 5 for Sidebottom

Gold Coast's problem is finding players who want to go there. The calibre of the pick doesn't help secure B-graders because the players in question don't enjoy the benefit of it.

If 2-3 B-graders want in, then you pay with 2-3 B-grade picks and use 5 on another good kid or an A-grade trade if one finally wants to come.

Breust, Gunston & Greaves for 5?
Boat has sailed on that one I think and even if it didn’t they have tried getting both out before, they don’t seem at all interested.

Laird wouldn't be a bad one to look at. 27 y.o. mid who could move back to defence in a few years once the kids take over. Don't think you would give up 5 for him though.
that would be tempting

Hard to see this pick moving, particularly for a straight swap. As previously raised attracting the 'right' player is difficult, this person will need good leadership qualities, worth ethic and a positive contributor to culture and performance. They tend to stay at their own club or go home.

The earlier post about involving brisbane and richmond in a pick a player swap makes sense as an example of what could happen, however there is a good argument for CCJ to stay. Riewoldt probably has one more year before his KPF post belongs to CCJ.

I love a convoluted trade scenario, and this will surely annoy many but for conversations sake I'm proposing a mega trade situation involving 1 x 'A' grader, a bunch of pick swaps and movement of a depth player. I think GC need some tall/ruck depth and support down back. Their midfield and forwards look ok if they can retain what they have. Picks based on current ladder positions.

- Collingwood give Darcy moore (pre-agent - decent risk of leaving), max lynch, a future 1st (4-10 range). Get pick 1 and future 3rd (from north), 43 and 63 (from gold coast)

- North give pick 1, 38 and future 3rd (37-42 range), get pick 5 and 24 (from GC), and future 1st (from collingwood)

- Gold coast give 5, 19, 24, 43, 55,60, 63 and a future 1st (4-8 range) and get Moore and lynch (from collingwood), pick 8 and future 1st (from essendon)

- Essendon give 8,45,51 and future 1st (8-12 range) and get 17 (from bulldogs), 19 and future 1st (from gold coast) and future 3rd (from bulldogs)

- Dogs give up 17 and future 3rd (50-54 range) for 38 (from north), 45 and 51 (from essendon), 55 and 60 (from gold coast)

In effect Collingwood loose a gun key back but gain Horne at # 1 in the draft before they match a bid daicos and now have enough points to ensure their 2022 draft hand is not compromised. They can throw cash at a free agent next year or the year after to make up for the loss of a 1st round pick in 2022.

North slide back 4 live picks this year but add an early second rounder and probable top 10 pick next year. Not bad if you add Kelly as a FA this year.

Gold coast pick up a key back instead of a kid and some back up in the ruck. They slide back 3 positions in this years draft and 4-5 positions in next years draft. They also get rid of 2-3 picks this year they're probably not going to use.

Essendon split their 1st pick this year for 2 x picks around 20-22 range which will nicely complement the 3 x top 10 picks last year. They banks points for one of the davey twins next year and hopefully stay in the top 5-6 picks in the 2022 draft (before there is a bid on the davey's).

Dogs gain 400 points to match on a darcy bid this year and lose a 3rd rounder next year.

Who doesn't love July draftology!

Agree with a lot of the points made here. Don't think the Suns will mind paying overs with Pick 5 for the right player, but most of the players we want will be difficult to get.

Suspect it will be used on the best tall in the draft. Don't mind the idea of trading it for a low first next year though, if the deal works. There is enough talent at the club now to skip a draft or two. Really need a tall at each end who will be best 22.

Hmm, what would he cost? Definitely not #5, but would it take #19 or could they use their second rounder?

The real problem is how much overs would they have to pay Laird to make the move?

Laird just signed a 5 year deal at Adelaide. It would take big overs to prise him out (remember the words of that omnipotent all conquering list manager SOS)..you have to pay overs for a player with years left on contract. Pick 19 would not touch the sides right now

fair play. I think he wont come as expensive as he would've in previous years. Value would be at an all time low for him.
Agree, obviously not my first choice mid but if he's keen for 600-650k a year i can deal with that.

Then he stays at the Crows. No-one in their right mind is paying the Crows more than pick a late teen pick for Laird. I'd prefer Crouch and even then I don't see the appeal
