I think one of the ferry terminals is planned to be around the Jupiters/Convention Centre area. You can't build a ferry system on the Gold Coast without including Broadbeach.

Hup6soG.jpg
Agreed, but I'm not familiar with the heights of the bridges around the rivers behind the convention centre.

Imagine a game at Metricon Stadium and the ability to catch a ferry from the Appel Park Wharf in Surfers through to the stadium itself. That view coming up to the game would be incredible, especially during a night game.

Get a look at the plans released today for the Gold Coast over the next 10-20 years:

Southport, Main Beach and Surfers Paradise are going to be filled with high rises with a particular focus on Southport becoming the CBD. We've seen how much of a difference a CBD stadium can make in Adelaide and for that reason I think the AFL/Suns should keep an eye on Owen Park. It is currently occupied by a local rugby league team and is located right on the south-western corner of the CBD boundaries. There is definitely enough spare land at Owen Park to build a stadium. The Southport Sharks were once based at Owen Park before they were able to secure more land on the western side of Southport. It's also 500 metres from a light rail station.

What do you think the likelihood of Gold Coast having another stadium? There's already an oval stadium and a rectangle stadium for the premier level sports, so how would another stadium be warranted? I personally love the idea, but I can't see any reason why Metricon would become redundant to the government.

What's the current deal for Metricon anyway? I'd love to see a 40k stadium in the GC CBD in a couple of decades time!

It's very much a long term proposition. It would have to get to a point where it was obvious Metricon had become redundant for the Suns' needs and no upgrade would fix that. I think Wookie said the Suns took out a 20-year lease at Carrara so that means it will expire in 2030. By that point there will be more than a million people living on the Gold Coast and the CBD should be up and running. But as I said, it would need to become obvious that Metricon was no longer good enough, which essentially means in excess of 35,000 people are regularly going to Suns games every second weekend. That may sound absurd right now but a lot can happen in 15 years and the Suns are banking on a generational change to kick in just before 2030.

Ideally, the Gold Coast would have a cricket team by then and they could occupy Metricon so that the stadium doesn't become completely redundant. It would be similar to the situation in Perth where the needs of West Coast and Fremantle far outweigh the needs of WA Cricket so the cricket continue to be based out of the smaller WACA while West Coast and Fremantle get their own bigger stadium just outside the CBD. Obiously big events will be held at the Perth Stadium which may include cricket and similarly I think you would see national teams playing out of a 40k+ stadium in the Gold Coast CBD if it eventuated. The Suns would probably continue to train out of the Carrara Sports Precinct because the facilities on offer should outweigh anything they could build in the CBD. A lot would also come down to political weight the Suns hold at the time. The Cats have taken full advantage of the political weight they hold in Geelong and the stadium/training facilities continue to get upgraded as a result. You only have political weight as a sports team if you have a strong following.

And, the most important component of all, the land at Owen Park needs to avoid the prospect of becoming a high rise. The current boundaries of the CBD should protect Owen Park from something ridiculous getting proposed on the land but all it takes is one company to see potential in the site and you can kiss goodbye any chance of a CBD stadium. That's why I think the AFL/Suns should just keep an eye on it for now. Just about every stadium in the AFL is located inside or just outside a city's CBD. Adelaide Oval, MCG, Etihad, the Gabba, SCG and the new Perth stadium. It's the natural progression for a city that takes their footy seriously.

Do you if that is a real photo? I only ask because I lived very close to the point the photo was taken but some of the buildings appear in the wrong position.. It looks doctored.

Edit.. I realise now it's taken further north from chevron island which would give it that perspective. Something still seems off in the pic, not including the giant transplanted moon.

It's been touched up no doubt but I've seen it look pretty close to that on a good night. The point is that the view on board a ferry would be pretty spectacular on the way back.

I had spectacular views and I agree, it's an awesome way to travel to and from the footy and should be promoted. It's an event/evening.

No doubt.

The anchor on the Gold Coast News tonight referred to Surfers Paradise as an "inner city suburb" which I thought was very interesting and the only time I've ever heard that. If Southport truly is the city/CBD then suddenly Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Ashmore and Labrador all become inner city suburbs.

Strange, as surfers is a dead 'city'. Full of empty shops ect. The reason a river cruise to and from Cararra would work is from travelers staying in surfers/Broady ect. Perhaps they are saying that because of the light rail?

Surfers Paradise is the epitome of a transient area. It's all about the tourist dollar and there isn't a lot of people actually living in the suburb year round. There is demand for property in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach but a lot of those people are interested in the property as an investment rather than a residence. I think as the CBD grows you'll probably see that decrease as people will want to live along the light rail line and utilise that public transport system to travel to and from work in the Southport CBD.

Right now there is demand for more high rise apartments in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach while there is demand office space in Southport. That tells you everything you need to know. They want to get to a point where 20% of the Gold Coast population works in the CBD which in current terms is 120,000 people. You can't fit 120,000 people in Southport which is why there will be demand for inner city suburbs like Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Ashmore and Labrador. That in turn will drive house/apartment prices in those suburbs and it'll be like any city in the world. They purposely built the light rail before the CBD so that it wouldn't come back to bite them later.

I think they are approaching the ferry system in the same way. There will definitely be ferry terminals in the major suburbs of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. It's also got to do with traffic management and changing transport habits. As it stands, too many people on the Gold Coast choose to drive everywhere and, if nothing is done about that, there will be gridlock every day in the near future. No one wants that. The public transport infrastructure needs to be built/upgraded and the roads need upgrades. The major road of the Gold Coast only provides two lane travel between Robina and the border. Upgrades need to happen now because it's going to become A LOT harder in the future.

Gold Coasters who shaped city to be honoured with 'avenue of icons'
SOME of the people who helped make the Gold Coast what it is today may soon stand watch over the world-famous Surfers Paradise beach.

A council committee is investigating a proposal to build an “avenue of icons” to immortalise in metal those people who helped shape the Coast’s tourism industry — the backbone of the city.

Among those whose statues may soon stand along The Esplanade are meter maids founder Bernie Elsey, Sea World developer Keith Williams and former Mayor Sir Bruce Small.

Others are the “mother of the meter maids” Eileen Peters who served as a city councillor and Surfers Paradise community leader through the 1960s and who died aged 88 in 2005, photographer Regina King, bikini queen Paula Stafford and businessman Ian Hollindale.

The proposal has the backing of Mayor Tom Tate, area councillor Lex Bell and business leaders and the committee hopes to have the concept approved by the end of the year.

It was discussed yesterday at a meeting of the council’s Heart of the City advisory committee.

Chairman Max Christmas, who initiated the project, said it was important to recognise the people who had helped make Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast the city it is today.

“It would not be something looking at everyone from the Gold Coast’s history but those people who helped promote tourism in the centre,” he said.

“Bernie Elsey definitely would be in there, along with Sir Bruce Small and probably Keith Williams, because these people were the backbone of what made this city what it is.”

“It is early days but we are now working on it.”

The Bulletin understands Surfers Paradise-based architect Barry Lee has been involved in initial planning and would assist in the design.

The proposal comes as the family of iconic former mayor and developer Sir Bruce Small lobbies to have a statue in Surfers Paradise of the late developer replaced with one showing a greater likeness.

The existing statue was designed based on how Sir Bruce appeared during the last years of his life when he was battling cancer.

If approved by the council, the new Small statue would become part of the new collection.

Area councillor Lex Bell said the project had been in the works since 2013.

“There was a suggestion to have statues of important people along the foreshore near the end of Elkhorn Ave, rather than have them scattered all over the place,” he said.

“The mayor is generally supportive of this and all it needs to get the motor moving is an official application.”

Interesting idea. Sir Bruce Small already has a statue in Surfers Paradise but it's placed away from the action on the corner of Elkhorn and Orchid Avenue. Along The Esplanade would be a much better location. I think the idea is create a sense of history on the Gold Coast. Despite what some think, the Gold Coast has lots of history predating 2000. It also opens up the door for other statues to be built. Perhaps the first Gold Coast sports team to win a national premiership? A picture of Eade and Ablett holding up the AFL Premiership cup would be pretty fitting given Eade himself played on the Gold Coast and Ablett is arguably the greatest player of all time. The idea is to recognise people who have contributed to the Gold Coast tourism industry and the city itself and there is no doubt an AFL Premiership would be huge for the tourism industry here. It was reported last year that Collingwood games on the Gold Coast inject $5 million into the local economy. That is a huge injection into the tourism industry on the Gold Coast and it wouldn't happen if the Suns didn't exist. I'm sure a home final would have a similar impact.

Experimental, you may be interested in this after the Cruise Ship Terminal plans have been officially axed. Hong Kong billionaire Tony Fung has recently purchased the Christopher Skase-built five star resort Sheraton Mirage in northern Main Beach. He wants to develop the Sheraton Mirage and Marina Mirage area into a luxurious casino resort. The deal hinges on a casino licence being approved and, according to the media, there has been ongoing closed-door negotiations taking place between Fung and the Queensland Government.

This site makes much more sense to me for lots of reasons.
  • It is already located in a high roller area with the likes of the Palazzo Versace resort being located right next to it. The Versace has recently housed big celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones. Even Jay Z and Beyonce have spent time at Marina Mirage in recent years. So it already has the reputation and shouldn't have any issues attracting big spenders.
  • The fact that the Sheraton Mirage is the only five-star beachfront resort on the Gold Coast means the site offers a more real Gold Coast experience than other options. It also happens to be located about 2kms from Sea World and we all know theme parks are very Gold Coast.
  • There are plans in place to create a ferry terminal at Marina Mirage and extend the light rail from the Main Beach station up to Sea World, which would obviously include a stop at this precinct. So it should be accessible via ferry, tram and car in the near future.
  • It happens to be located just over the Broadwater from the CBD. This means people staying in the Sheraton Mirage would have CBD views to west and Pacific Ocean views to the east. You would also have Surfers Paradise skyline views to the south and Sea World to the north. The balcony views in the future will be amazing.
  • Perhaps most importantly to the public, the site has already been developed and is privately owned which means the ecologically influenced groups such as Save Our Spit, who appeared to have a big voice when it came to the Cruise Ship Terminal, can't really get involved as it would not destroy any existing ecosystems.
This is what the area currently looks like:

In case anyone is confused, the Pacific Ocean is at the bottom of this picture and the Broadwater is at the top. We have the Sheraton Mirage closest to the Pacific Ocean. So, overall, I think this is a considerably better option than the casino plan for Wave Break Island that was being masked as a Cruise Ship Terminal. As long as there is nothing silly attached, I'd like to see this go ahead.

I love the plans! Still a bit annoyed that the Wave Break Island idea won't go ahead, though. Is there still a plan for a casino at Cararra near Metricon, or has that been scrapped?

Negative. The group that applied for that casino licence (Ridong) was up against the Wave Break Island (ASF) proposal and lost out. This article from two months ago states that it is believed the riverfront Nerang site will be transformed into a hotel, apartment and commercial precinct valued at $2 billion. Obviously plans can and often do change when it comes to these things but the Ridong Group has apparently teamed up with the Wanda Group to make the Nerang plans a reality.

Are they for real? Well, both groups are financing the $1 billion Jewel project in Surfers Paradise that is currently under construction. Next time you're on the Coast go for a little drive along Old Burleigh Rd in southern Surfers Paradise and you'll see the Jewel site that has been levelled. It is behind the Crowne Plaza on the corner of Old Burleigh & Wharf Rds.

Back to the CBD/Sheraton, although there is already a lot of Chinese investment in the Gold Coast at the moment, it was announced yesterday that the Wanda Group has struck a deal with Jetstar that will see them co-fund two weekly direct flights from Wuhan, China. They will start in September and the Wanda Group plans to offer Gold Coast holiday packages to the Chinese public. We all know how important the Chinese middle class will be in the future for the Gold Coast's/Australia's economy so this is very good news for the city.

It is often said that Japan built Surfers Paradise in the 1980s and I think we're looking at a situation in which China could build majority of the Gold Coast's CBD. Back to the casino, ASF still has preliminary approval for the next casino licence and are looking for a new site to make their plans a reality but are in a race against time. Tom Tate suggested the old hospital site in the middle of the Southport CBD would be a good site for a casino but that is state owned. I wouldn't be surprised if ASF runs out of time and the preliminary licence is essentially handed over to Fung for the Sheraton Mirage site. It should be noted that Fung was granted the preliminary casino licence for the Yorkeys Knob site up in Cairns. The plans for that development looked like this:

The top image shows the Meriton project that is almost finished. It overlooks the Broadwater. You can't miss it if you drive over the Sundale Bridge. A picture of that project from today:

Air on Broadbeach 2.0?
They do look similar. This one actually doesn't have a name as of yet. Air on Broadwater perhaps? The site is located on the corner of High St and Railway St and is currently an empty grass lot. So essentially it'll have nice Broadwater views until someone decides to build another high rise in front of it. There is also another empty grass lot right right next to it and the two properties were sold as a bundle so you would think there will be another high rise popping up soon.

Gold Coast Show may returnO to Owen Park

This would be great news, not only for the show but the potential future of the site. Owen Park is literally about 100 metres from the western boundary of the CBD. It's also about 300 metres from one of the CBD light rail stops and about 600 metres from another light rail stop west along Queen St so it's easily accessible to the public. We saw the wonders the light rail did for the GC600 last year so I think a move like this could have a similar effect on the Gold Coast Show. Anyway, moving the show there should prevent any chance of someone building a high rise on the site which is crucial for a future CBD stadium on the Gold Coast.

Owen Park has an interesting history. It originally housed the Southport Cricket Club and the racing club (greyhounds and horses) came not long after. The article above correctly points out that Owen Park is the spiritual home of the Gold Coast Show because it was held there for many years but possibly more interesting is the fact that the Southport Sharks spent decades playing out of Owen Park before they moved west to their current headquarters. In fact, in March 1982 Geelong and Footscray played a VFL exhibition match at Owen Park. The Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame also happens to be at Owen Park. It's the perfect site for a future CBD stadium.

Speaking of iconic structures, look at what Sunland just submitted to the GC council!

The beauty is breathtaking! This article released today states it will include cultural precinct with a world-class museum, galleries and outdoor sculptural gardens. There will even be an underground aquarium! Obviously the two 44 storey residential towers are included as well. It's almost like Federation Square, Melbourne Aquarium and a museum all put together! It will be built on the Mariner's Cove site just over the Broadwater from the Southport CBD. I'm sure The Spit will eventually become a part of the CBD anyway.

Experimental, the design is similar to the recent Grace on Coronation project in Brisbane. I really like this one. The only thing that can stop it from going ahead is the Save Our Spit group getting involved but I'm hoping they see how great it would be for the city. Adding to this, ASF (Cruise Ship Terminal casino licence holders) are now in talks with the State Government over acquiring land right next to Mariner's Cover. Directly over the road from Mariner's Cove also happens to be the Sheraton Mirage site that Tony Fung promised to develop into something iconic. So, as you can see, there are MASSIVE plans for this little part of The Spit and it is all within walking distance of the CBD (just under 2kms). Fortunately, there will be a ferry terminal built on both sides of the Broadwater in the near future and access will become even easier. Sea World is also located just north of this project.

It's all happening!

So is that on top of what's currently Marina Mirage, or just to the south of it? I can't tell with those images.

Literally just to the south. Mariner's Cover is next to Marina Mirage. If you look at the pictures above, you'll see the Marina Mirage sails. Now look here:

You can see the sails are above Marina Mirage. Here is an aerial shot that shows where Mariner's Cove is just to the right (south) of the sails:

Gold Coast businesses lobby council for small, alcohhol-only bars
Business owners on Queensland's Gold Coast are lobbying the council to allow small, alcohol-only bars in the region.

Under the current town plan there are no bar licences available, forcing venue owners to operate as restaurants, taverns or hotels.

It means licensees must have a food menu available, and food sales must exceed drink sales.

Owner of Bine Bar and Dining at Nobbys Beach, Scott Imach, said he has been asking the council to change the law for years.

"You've either got have accommodation or gaming; club licences you're obviously gaming and you've got to be an affiliated club, so then it comes back to again restaurant licences, which is the only other thing available. It's a massive shame," he said.

"I've just spent six weeks in Europe investigating other bar options, it's happening all over the world - it's just the Gold Coast is behind the times in the small bar scene."

Figures from the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation show there are 49 other commercial bar licences in Queensland, but only three of these are in the Gold Coast local government area.

Mr Imach said people did not always want to go to busy nightclubs, instead seeking out trendy, low-key social venues.

"These small bars are popping up in every other city - you go to Melbourne - everywhere, Sydney - everywhere, Brisbane- they're dime a dozen up there and people are loving them."

He said the demand for bars on the Gold Coast was so strong that people were operating them under the radar anyway, and being fined thousands of dollars for it.

"There's been bars and restaurants that have been fined on the Gold Coast that I'm aware of, some they've threatened to close them down," he said.

Town plan provision needs Qld Government sign-off: council
Gold Coast City Councillor Greg Betts said when the current town plan was developed more than 10 years ago there was not a market for bars.

"Over the past five years or so we've seen a demand, and it's been taken up by restaurants, but a lot of those operators would prefer to say 'I don't really want to provide the meals, I'd just like to have a small bar'," Cr Betts said.

He said the council has added a small bar function into its new town plan, but it still needed to be signed off on by the State Government.

"Through having that approval we're encouraging people to spread out amongst the community and not concentrate everyone into the entertainment areas just to go and have a drink," he said.

If approved, the provision would allow a small bar specific land use in spaces up to 100 square metres.

The move has been welcomed by some local residents, like Hugh Masters.

"I think it's a big thing that's lacking up here," he said.

"They're starting to get a bit of culture but definitely little, cool groovy bars you see everywhere in Melbourne and Sydney and stuff definitely needs to be on the Gold Coast."

I was not aware that small alcohol-only bars were not allowed on the Gold Coast. This would explain why there aren't any laneways with cool little bars like in Melbourne or Sydney. I know the Southport Liquor Accord was actually pushing for approval and the Gold Coast News tonight said it was likely to get state approval in the near future. If you drive around the Gold Coast you'll notice all the little bars are actually restaurants as well. The nightlife will thrive in the Southport CBD once this is a approved because little bars will likely pop up on every street. There really should be an option to drink without having to go to a restaurant/nightclub.

Also, here are some more renders of the Mariner's Cove project. It looks amazing:
