Rebuild Mark II
2019/20 - 2022/23 Press Statements

aaa6.gif

2015 to 2018
Time at the top

From 2012 - 2014 Gold Coast committed to a successful three year rebuild in an effort to win an elusive premiership. The following four years would see the club play in three of four grand finals for two premierships, with only an unlucky preliminary final loss after finishing undefeated as minor premiers that year preventing them from playing in all four grand finals. The club's success was a direct result of a deliberate and calculated three year plan which would see the club build to a peak when several of their best players would become veterans. Over those years only a couple of teams were able to match the club on a semi-regular basis.

2019
Depth of quality opposition

Then in 2019 everything changed. The quality of opposition teams suddenly got very deep. There were still a few teams that stood out but anyone within the top 8 or 9 teams was a genuine chance of winning against any of the top teams. Gold Coast's 5th place position at the end of the minor rounds was probably not a reflection on the top 4 quality within the team as there were a few unlucky losses; a fact that was evidenced when the club won two do-or-die finals to make the Prelim. But the depth in the league was obvious and it was clear that it was going to be a lot more difficult to win a premiership in the next year or two. Trading over the off-season was going to be crucial if the club was going to remain at the top of the league.

2019/20 off-season trading pattern
The rebuild begins

Gold Coast went into the off-season with the intent of competing for another premiership and early trades were going well. But finding deals for quality players was difficult with half the league having the same immediate goals. Most clubs were targeting the same players and not wanting to trade out quality players. Then, in the middle of the trade period, a couple of offers were presented that forced a decision. Accepting the offers would essentially point the club towards a second rebuild. Some feelers were sent out regarding other deals that would give similar types of trades and the response was positive. So, the offers were accepted and Gold Coast committed to the rebuild. Teams who were planning on competing for the 2020 premiership were happy to trade younger prospects for established scorers and by the end of the off-season, several of Gold Coast's best players had been moved on. Gold Coast's premiership window was now officially closed.

2020 season
Breakout seasons all round

The 2020 season was significantly more successful than Gold Coast could ever have anticipated. Despite trading away significant quality in the 2019/20 off-season, the club finished in the top 8, surprisingly winning more than 50% of matches. This was due to the fact that nearly all players who had been traded in showed eye-catching improvement. Luke Davies-Uniacke and Hugh Greenwood became top tier players for their clubs, while Nick Coffield, Jack Bowes, Jack Scrimshaw, Wil Powell and Charlie Ballard all established themselves as essential defenders. Oscar McInerney became #1 ruckman at Brisbane and all three draftees showed good signs, as did Isaac Cumming and Aiden Bonar when given opportunities. In addition, Tom Fullerton, Sam Draper and Mabior Chol, who were recruited in earlier seasons, were finally given the opportunity to impress and didn't let the club down. The onfield performance of the club and the players exceeded all expectations. The rebuild was off to an outstanding start.

2020/21 off-season
A view to 2022 and beyond

Gold Coast has taken a different approach to this current rebuild. In fact, it's potentially more of a repositioning than a rebuild. Instead of trading for players who would be peaking in three years time, the club has focused on obtaining as many highly rated young players as possible who have not yet established themselves and giving them salaries the club hopes will be much lower than their future scoring output. If successful, the club could potentially be in a strongl position in the 2021/22 off-season, where we can either retain the players on their current contracts or trade them to other clubs for quality scorers in an attempt to jump back to the top of the AFLTM ladder.

Alternatively, they might all be busts and I could end up stuck with a team of hacks that I can't get rid of for the next 4-5 seasons.

2021/22 off-season
Another year at the bottom expected

The 2020/21 off-season saw the club transition into a full rebuild, focusing on the recruitment of promising juniors on cheap long term contracts. As a result, a high percentage of players are in the early stages of development and getting limited opportunities at this early stage. While some are showing good signs at either AFL level or in the seconds, others appear to have stalled in their development.
The 2021/22 off-season has seen Gold Coast continue to target players at a similar stage of development, with a focus on young talls. As a result, the club is expecting another year at the bottom of the ladder. While there is some potential for a small rise in ladder position it would come as no surprise if the club may finish with back-to-back wooden spoons.
The club is confident that the majority of players obtained over the past two seasons will repay the faith; however, it is also acknowledged that some 4-5 year salaries are risky. We are confident that the majority of players will have been given opportunities at AFL level by the end of the season and are hopeful that several will have established themselves as best 22 in their respective AFL clubs.

2022/23 off-season
Future veterans and more established young talent the priority.

The 2022 season saw Gold Coast remain at the bottom end of the ladder as expected, but the real disappointment was not the ladder position, but the limited improvement in the players. Player development also slowed, partly due to a neverending list of injuries across the board, and the drop off in contribution from current club veterans made it apparent that the next premiership window was not going to occur while they were still relevant. The Devils needed to start to focus on planning for the next generation of veterans.

The first two options were no-brainers. Silvagni moves automatically to veteran status by the end of his next contract and resigning Matthew Kennedy became the highest priority of the out of contract players as we was already a three year Gold Coast player and his new contract locks him in as a future veteran. There were several offers for Will Powell which were all declined as he is next in line for veteran status. O'Brien would also become a veteran at around the same time but would be considerably older so the club was open to trading him under the right circumstances. Those circumstances eventuated through the signing of Luke Jackson who will only require a one year extension to his current contract before he becomes a veteran without the need to go through the bidding process to retain him. Other players such as Florent, Richards, Hayes and Clark are all at ages that suit veteran progression at or around the five year qualification period. Being a four year Gold Coast player, Tom Fullarton was also retained early. The club is also confident that several rookies will put themselves in contention for a senior spot by this time next year.

Other than veteran planning, the club continued to target younger players on good value long term contracts and to accumulate a long list of rucks and/or key forwards in order to maximise the chance of developing some elite talls. With a little more luck on the injury front, the addition of more established players, and more confidence in the development of younger players than the previous season, Gold Coast expect to take their first steps back up the lower half of the ladder in 2023 and aim to be back playing finals within the next two years..

2023/24 off-season
The first steps up the ladder, looking to 2025.

After winning only one game in the previous two seasons, Gold Coast made the first steps up the ladder, winning four games and finishing above three other teams. One of those teams scored more points overall, but that is mainly due to a slow start to the season. The deeper the season went, the more consistent the young Gold Coast players became, resulting in much more competitive team totals.

The off season was a lot less active than usual for the Devils. Only five AFL listed players were not retained from the senior list and three unlisted AFL players had their salaries paid out. One vacant spot was filled by the promotion of former rookie, Seamus Mitchell and the others by recent AFL 1st round selections in Van Rooyen, Aleer, Rowston, Jones and Brown. Gold Coast went into te National Draft with Picks 12 and 20 which were used to snap up Nick Watson and Will McCabe. Five of the six remaining rookies (including mid-season rookie) were also retained, with promising youngster Caleb Mitchell also accepting an offer to move from another club.

The club entered the 2023/24 off season with a focus on the 2024/25 off season. The risky gambles that didn't pay off from previous seasons were cleared out and the young players brought in are a much safer bet than those who are now gone. $1.7m excess salary will be available from the unlisted players alone and nine players will come out of contract. Many will have strong trade value. Matthew Kennedy and Jack Silvagni will both reach veteran eligibility, also freeing up salary space. This time next year Gold Coast will be targeting established players to fill the holes that still need to be filled for the next push for a premiership.

3 year plan leads to 2015 Premiership
with exerpts from "A New Approach - Gold Coast look beyond 2012". Full article here

After three top 4 finishes from 2009 to 2011 resulted in disappointing finals series Gold Coast manager sausageroll came to the conclusion that the club would struggle to win a premiership without having quality veterans in the squad and decided to rebuild with a focus on when Deledio and LeCras would be eligible.

Deledio's contract was immediately extended. He and LeCras will be eligible for stalward (edit: now removed with veteran age reduced) status in a few years time which will be massive for the team

The key to the rebuild was getting in as many quality players in their early 20s that would be hopefully peaking at that time and would then become the next generation of veterans when Deledio and co were leaving the game. Quality players already in their mid-late 20s were traded out for 2015 squad members like Gaff, Ziebell, Trengove and Bellchambers; while other youngsters who came to the club that year but had subsequently moved on due to list management include Conca, Hansen, Ballantyne and Batchelor among others.
Players like Swan, Pavlich, Hille, Moloney and Thomas were traded for younger players as long-term prospects for stalward spots in the future and most deadwood was moved on.

A similar approach was taken into the draft where mature age recruits Zorko and Bell were drafted, with late pick Lachie Neale being the only exception. Gold Coast had traded in young guns by downgrading picks to where the preferred mature age players were expected to still be available. The plan worked with the Devils managing to secure 7 of their top 10 preferences.
Gold Coast now has a heap of players I'm hoping will give provide a couple of quality long-term players from all ages. And future trades will be made with the intention of filling vital pieces of the puzzle needed to be a powerhouse when it all comes together.

Three years later Deledio and Lecras joined long-term players in Gibson and Malceski on the veteran list and it's finally time to make a move. Gold Coast went in the off-season with the sole intent of mounting a serious challenge for the 2015 premiership.

As a result of having millions of dollars in salary cap space saved through 2013-14 list management and the two new veterans, Gold Coast were able to upgrade Brown, Darling, Tyson, Dwyer, Otten, Tuohy and Hardingham from the 2014 best 18 to Walker, Lynch, Armitage, Masten, Rich, Houli and Heath Shaw while retaining established depth players to cover the ongoing long-term loss of Trengove and injuries throughout the year.

The team didn't disappoint despite requiring approximately 15 reserves players to step up throughout the season. The team scored heavily throughout the season and finished with over 1000 points more than the nearest rival while losing only two matches for the whole of 2015.

Anything can happen in finals though and the Gold Coast finals record was less than impressive. Suddenly injuries and suspensions hit hard and the team's depth was being pushed to the limit as scores took a dive. The depth was the only thing that saw the team through the early games and luckily the byes earned in the Qualifying and Preliminary final rounds came when the team would have been stretched the most.

Over the two weeks leading up to the grand final the majority of players became available for selection against the Harbour City Hornets, and Knobby had unfortunately several key players rested by their AFL clubs on the day. The Hornets fought hard and Knobby may well consider consider himself a bit unlucky, but in the end the three year focused rebuild for Gold Coast was rewarded with the 2015 Premiership.

Preseason Statement

What do you get when half your team scores 66 points or less?

Answer: Thrashed in the grand final.

Five players under 50. Another four players 66 or less. So bad nobody even bothered doing the Grand Final scores for 2 and 1/2 months. There was no need when Lance Franklin alone almost matched Jesse Hogan, Heath Shaw, Tom Scully, Tom Lynch and Luke Hodge, and Taylor Walker didn't even bother turning up. Of those six "stars" only Lynch will be lining up for Gold Coast in 2018 as the axe swung heavily during the trade period.

The core of the best 18 was great, and showed it was a strong premiership contender by inflicting the only two losses on an otherwise undefeated Geelong team but inconsistency from a number of players made selection decisions difficult. An excess of depth in defence and a shortage of quality specialist midfielders added to the problem as the Devils were forced to fill midfield positions with defenders.

Bryce Gibbs and Brad Ebert are huge upgrades in the midfield, as are Shaun Higgins up forward and Tom McDonald filling the key defensive void that came from Josh Gibson's huge fall from grace. While the key forward positions look a bit vulnerable, it's probably no more vulnerable than it was in 2017. The key forward strategy shifts more towards a focus on the future with the addition of Jon Patton and Tim O'Brien, but also saw Josh Jenkins added as very good insurance for the starting 18. More reliable key forwards were targeted, but the inflated salaries of those players would have left no salary cap space for the top quality midfield and key defensive positions that were added and the new forward line looks to be an improvement anyway.

Overall the 18 has much better balance while maintaining strong depth as Gold Coast perseveres with a primary focus on winning another premiership, however the future of the club has not been ignored with the addition of several largely unproven young players highly rated by Gold Coast being traded in on long term contracts. The club is confident these youth trades will pay off in the long run.

Coming into the busy trade period, Gold Coast felt they had a strong enough core of players to trade aggressively for players who would fill the weaker midfield and fragile key forward and defender positions. While this has been achieved in most cases, success in 2018 is likely to depend on the gamble on the key forward positions. Gold Coast has moved on from the disappointment of the 2017 Grand Final and looks to have set up well for another legitimate premiership push in 2018.
