Gold Coast manager/coach sausageroll is delighted with the talent that the club has picked up in the National Draft. It's not often you get the opportunity to add this kind of quality all over the ground but The Crocs off-season trading has enabled them to pick up 4 of the best kids in the country.

"We were very happy with the quality of players we were able to secure during the trade period but to also land such quality youngsters as well is just amazing. I must be dreaming, I feel like somebody's gonna wake me up and ruin it for me any minute now"

"Hamish Hartlett (pick 3) and Sam Blease (pick 13) will add supreme quality to our midfield. We're very excited to have them onboard and expect them both to get a fair bit of gametime in 2009 and beyond."

"Michael Hurley was an automatic selection at pick 7. There's no doubt he's far and away the best defender in this draft and quite frankly we were shocked that he was still available when our pick came up. He will add valuable depth to our key defenders which we identified as one of our concerns. He was strongly considered at pick 3 but we couldn't let Hartlett pass by and it worked out beautifully for us. We are hoping that he will get good gametime this year."

"Tyrone Vickery (pick 12) will add great flexibility and depth with his ability to play up forward or in the ruck. Although big men take longer to develop we feel that there could be opportunities for Vickery to get some AFL experience under his belt this year. Having both Vickery and Patto on the list almost guarantees one of them will be playing"

The Crocs still have 2 late picks in the draft and will be looking at just picking up the best players available to round out the team list.

Gold Coast feel that if they can stay clear of too many injuries that will be in a position to be a serious contender in 2009.

Gold Coast pick up Christmas Bargains

It's Christmas time and Gold Coast the club has gleefully unwrapped the exciting presents handed to them by the other clubs.

After having 4 picks from the top 13 Gold Coast had to sit back and wait patiently to see who would still be available for their final picks (picks 63 & 79). Coach/manager, sausageroll, declared that they would simply use their picks on the best available players but surely couldn't have expected the quality that was still available when their picks came up.

Liam Jones (pick 63) is a versatile bottom-age key position player who has shown ability at both ends of the ground. He was taken at pick 32 in the AFL ND but had he not missed most of 2008 with a knee injury we may well have gone top 20. He will need a bit of development but we feel that to get a player who is a potential gun this low in the draft is pretty special.

We can only assume that Tom Gillies (pick 79) was passed over by so many teams was because he was drafted by Geelong. But this strong and agile Key Defender, taken at pick 33 in the ND, could very easily find himself being a vital member of the Cats defence sooner rather than later. Egan will probably never play again... Milburn is getting on... Mackie is likely to get more time in the middle... If they get injuries in defence Gillies could find himself right in the thick of the action.

sausageroll's views on the 2 draft picks summed up the jovial feeling in the club "To be honest, we weren't expecting anything more than stocking fillers with our last 2 picks but then, when it was our turn to pick, we saw the 2 biggest Christmas presents under the draft tree had our name on them! It certainly is a very merry GC christmas!! I feel like I wanna rub my belly and laugh... Ho Ho Ho"

Crocs looking to step up in 2010

While Gold Coast are bitterly disappointed with falling just short of playing in this year's Grand Final the alarm bells don't seem to be ringing at GC headquarters if coach sausageroll's comments are to be believed..
"Sure, we were devastated at the time but also very proud of the boy's efforts on the day. With 4 stars in D.Cross, J.McVeigh, B.Dalziell and D.Hille all unavailable and Jobe Watson playing with an injury along with the Retirement of Key Forward Scott Lucas it was always going to be a tough assignment to win against top 3 opposition."

Gold Coast realise that injuries are just a part of the game though and are not too concerned about future problems as these players are not regarded as injury-prone players.

When asked about team management and Gold Coast's prospects for the 2010 season SR seemed excited.
"A great core of players still remain contracted with the club and a look at the best 22 players under contract shows that Crocs should be very competitive again next season."

Current players coming out of contract frees up just over $2m in salary cap. Lucas and Wirrapanda alone free up almost $600k to be spent on quality replacements.

Gold Coast have decided to play it by ear with regards to trading and drafting over the off-season.
"Last season we were one of the most active teams during the trading period" says the coach entering his second trade period "After taking over a list built by a previous coach late last year I wanted to make the team my own and this was clearly the result. We'll certainly be exploring all trade options again this year but are unsure at this stage how much we will be turning over our list of contracted players."

What excactly does that mean? Only sausageroll himself really knows. Or does he? He ends the interview with one statement...

"No pick or player is off the table"

Gold Coast are looking at the possibility of a name change. We will be staying on the Gold Coast but the "Crocs" name is likely to change. A decision on a new name will be made sometime in the near future.

GOLD COAST TO CHANGE NAME.

Gold Coast manager sausageroll has never been happy with the Crocs branding and has finally decided the time is right to re-brand the club.

While the club will remain in Gold Coast the previous manager's branding of the "Crocs" will be removed.

A number of possibilities were considered and finally a new name and logo has been produced.

I am proud to announce that the club will now go play as the Gold Coast Devils.

Cheers mate. Someone came up with it for a different team in a FF comp and I loved it so I asked if they'd do one for Gold Coast for me.

I was wanting to change the team name and this logo gave me the perfect opportunity :)
