Sorry for the intrusion Suns fans, just wondering how Jez Mclennan is developing? Curious as the Swans were keen on him on draft night but you traded up to nab him. Haven't seen or read much of him since so I was wondering if he's had some injuries?
Nope. Think he's just a bust. Rarely seen on the injury list.

Another mistake by our list managers in trading up to get him.

No Suns players named in the VFL team of the year

Down the road at Southport, only Jacob Dawson and Billy Gowers being named.

The Sandringham Dragons will go into 2022 with a new head coach after Jackson Kornberg accepted a role with AFL club Gold Coast.
The 28-year-old will coach the Suns’ VFL team.

The Dragons told their players of the decision in an online meeting tonight.

Kornberg was involved in the Dragons’ program in junior squads and development before landing the NAB League position at the end of last season.

He coached the boys and girls teams this year, taking a talent-packed boys side to an 8-1 record before the season was cut short by Covid.

Kornberg admitted he was surprised to be approached by the Suns.

“It’s really only been the last couple of days that it’s come to fruition. It’s moved pretty quickly,’’ he said.

AFL news 2021: VFL fixture 2022, teams, start date, list sizes, salary cap changes, 23rd man, clubs (foxsports.com.au)

As reported on AFL Media, the AFL on Tuesday confirmed the long-running state-league competition’s 2022 season would commence on the weekend of March 26 and 27, with the 21 teams to play 18 games each across a 22-round fixture that will be closely aligned to the AFL schedule.

There’s also been a 10 per cent increase to all team salary caps, with VFL standalone clubs now having $220,000 to play with — up from $200,000 — and AFL/AFL-aligned clubs’ caps increased to $110,000 — up from $100,000. Clubs must pay at least 90 per cent of their cap.

Crucially, two concessions have been added for 2022, with $10,000 outside the cap allowed for development coaches and $5000 for indigenous coaches.

The make-up of club lists has also been tweaked. While VFL standalone clubs can still have 28 primary and 12 development players to make up their list of 40, the amount of primary-listed players for AFL and AFL-aligned clubs — which can still have 30 players on a list — has been increased from 12 to 15 and the number of development players required reduced from 18 to 15.

There are two categories for development players: Category A (NAB League or Northern Academy players aged under 22 that are still engaged in the talent pathway program) and Category B (Next Generation Academy graduates, alternative sport athletes or indigenous players of any age, as long they haven’t played a VFL game yet).

Match-day selection has also changed, with the 23rd man — a rule used in the VFL before the AFL took ownership of the competition last year — returning, albeit without the 60 per cent game time limit and with caveats for AFL and AFL-aligned clubs.

When those 14 clubs pick their 23rd man for games next year, the player must be either an active 18 to 19-year-old player from the club’s development list or part of an aligned NAB League club or Northern Academy. The clubs also can’t name a player as their 23rd man more than four times in a season without AFL approval.

Overall, the AFL and AFL-aligned clubs — Box Hill Hawks (aligned to Hawthorn), Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Casey Demons (Melbourne), Collingwood, Essendon, Footscray (Western Bulldogs), Geelong Cats, Gold Coast Suns, GWS Giants, North Melbourne, Richmond, Sandringham (St Kilda) and Sydney Swans — must name a minimum of seven under-22 players per match, including the 23rd man.

The extra player for the seven VFL standalone clubs — Southport, Williamstown, Frankston, Werribee, Coburg, Northern Bullants and Port Melbourne — can come from either their primary or development lists, meaning those teams are only required to pick at least six players under 22.

So we can in theory recruit a Suns VFL player and pay them accordingly, outside our list?
Ie. we could pay a few experienced players, Townsend, Harbrow etc.. to be exclusive VFL players for us.
Correct. Lions will have Buzza and probably a couple more VFL only mature players.

Our issue will be the purse strings will the AFL allow us to spend that coin.
Last year neither Suns nor Lions used the money on VFL only players. Lions were exposed badly when injuries hit so this year they go for it.
Agree, with our extended list, AFL is probably not keen on it.

That's how the majority of the clubs work, but for some reason, Gold Coast has always opted to use their Academy to feed the VFL team.

It's worked well for other clubs, Brisbane has Buzza now, Geelong had Aaron Black before retiring, and Collingwood has just signed Neville Jetta and previously had Scott Selwood. It goes a long way for the development of the young AFL-listed players.

Usually development coaches who are young enough to still play. That's what Jetta will be doing. Playing coach. Like selwood did. And think Lynch now at North will be doing the same thing. Contracted as a coach, but being so experienced, that will go a long way to helping development in the VFL having that kind of experience around the kids.

Andrew Swallow basically did that for us as did Matthew Lappin.

Yep, Collingwood is the one that enjoys doing that. It also helps that they can put $10,000 of a playing coach's salary outside the salary cap.
I think it's important if Gold Coast wants to do any good in the competition (which I don't think they actually care too much) that they do get some experienced VFL players.

Are you talking about VFL? If so I would agree. It's all about players development.

Interestingly, last year both Suns and Lions did not sign any VFL only players. This year, Lions already signed something like 9 players according to briztoon (see our Pre-season 2022 thread). There will be quite possibly a serious need for extra players due to covid protocols so I would expect Suns signing some players too, probably not the same number as Suns have extra 3 players on the list already. Maybe players who already train with Suns or players who are done with academy. $110K budget is not much to play with.
