I’m interested to see how Green and Arnold go, as I’ve not seen them before.

Colenso is a gun, and I’m surprised GC didn’t sign him for their VFL team.

I would expect Buzza, Fletcher, Colenso and Reville to play every week. The others as required.

2022 Pre-Season Update - Gold Coast Suns

The Gold Coast Suns lacked a real VFL list in 2021 opting to use academy prospects to fill required spots on game day and have yet to confirm that they are going to do anything different in the 2022 season. A young list caused a mediocre year in their first VFL season as they finished 14th with a 4-6 record but were restricted from real competition due to restricted movement around the country meaning two of those wins came against the Sydney Swans and the remaining two wins coming from a struggling Aspley Hornets side. The Gold Coast Suns will be hoping to travel more often to play a wider range of teams in 2022.

Competition Updates

The Victorian Football League will return for the 2022 season on March the 26th and will continue to align closely with the Australian Football League Men's season for a 22 round season with each team taking 4 byes each. The Aspley Hornets are the only team to confirm their exit from the eastern coast competition with the remaining 21 clubs beginning to strengthen their sides for another run.

The salary cap has been increased by $20,000 for standalone teams to $220,000 while AFL and AFL-aligned clubs have received just a $10,000 boost to $110,000. The caps also introduce the ability to pay $10,000 of a playing coach's salary outside the cap while indigenous coaches implement a $5,000 concession.

The list size rules also remain pretty much identical to the 2021 rules with AFL affiliate clubs having a maximum of 30 players (15 development players, 15 primary listed players) while stand-alone clubs can have a total of 40 players on their lists (28 primary listed players, 12 development players).

Coaching Updates

The Gold Coast Sun's reserve side will be led by a new head coach in the upcoming season after Tate Kaesler has opted to spend more time with the AFL team as a strategy and defensive line coach. Kaesler moved to the Gold Coast from the Adelaide Crows initially as a development coach while spending time with the midfield group before moving to the VFL head coaching role at the beginning of the 2021 season.

As his replacement, Jackson Kornberg will lead the always young Gold Coast VFL team in 2022. Kornberg becomes the reserves coach after a year at the helm of the NAB League's Sandringham Dragons where he led the under 18's side to a first-place position with an 8-1 record but spent more than a decade in multiple roles across the club.

Kornberg will be hoping to do much of the same in his first year on the north eastern coast.

Outgoing Players

Austin Harris, is set to depart the Gold Coast Suns and has been training with the Essendon Bombers over the pre-season and will most likely join their VFL side if a senior opportunity doesn't arrive. Harris will not be the only one moving south for 2022 as Thomas Hofert also finds a spot at Port Melbourne and Bailey Reeves will join Central Districts in the South Australian state league.

Reeves averaged 16.1 disposals over seven matches in his first VFL season and included highlights of a 24 disposal game in round five against the Brisbane Lions and smashed the Southport Sharks with enormous tackle pressure in round six with a massive 10 tackle count

Max Pescud is set to stay in the sunshine state but will transfer over to Southport Sharks, while Jack Johnston leaves the state and heads to Port Melbourne to continue their VFL careers for different teams. Pescud managed just three matches in 2021 but averaged 17 disposals with two 20 disposal games and his third game including a two-goal haul. Johnston was named regularly at the level but struggled to find the ball (avg. 9.1 disposals).

The Gold Coast Suns are expected to continue to use a young list in the VFL, strengthening their ties with their own Academy, but Bodhi Uwland may stick around on the weekends if no AFL chances come knocking after signing with the senior side during the off-season after showing promise in the reserves program.

Bodhi Uwland will not be joined by Will Brodie, Aiden Fyfe, Jarrod Harbrow, Jack Hombsch, Jordan Murdoch, Zac Smith, Luke Towey, and Jacob Townsend who have all made an exit from the Gold Coast Suns senior list after spending the majority of their time at reserves level.

Jordan Murdoch (9 matches), Jarrod Harbrow (7 matches), Jack Hombsch (8 matches), and Zac Smith (5 matches) bought leadership to the younger group while also having a physical impact while Will Brodie was a key player over the season as he averaged 31.7 disposals over 9 matches with his highest disposal count coming in round three against the Collingwood Magpies with 42 disposals and 10 tackles.

Brodie has moved to the Fremantle Dockers joining Aiden Fyfe (Southport), Luke Towey (St Molaise Gaels, GAA), and Jacob Townsend (Southport) in finding new homes.

Good to see they aren't doubling up on the fixture (for now) to create more integrity for the fixture.

First year player and Darwin academy graduate Sandy Brock was impressive in his first official hit out, barely losing a contest all morning.

“Sandy is a promising and developing key back and we’re really looking forward to watching him this year.”

“He had to play on a couple of big boys out there today, often undersized but he was rarely beaten. He puts strong effort and intent into every training session and that showed today.”

Like to hear that. I think Brock has real potential to play on the King's, Thilthorpes, Darcy's of the next generation.
Remember some disgruntled members reporting that he was picked up ahead of other academy players because of his name.. Seems to be making his mark early.

Hopefully Brock can overtake Graham, if he has not done so already.

Didn’t Holland have a minor groin complaint? Maybe that’s why? Although if he’s going to play anyway may as wel give him a half in the 1’s.

Jeffrey was listed to play so interesting he dropped down.

Flanders is the wildcard as he doesn’t seem to have a spot locked down anywhere on the field, but definitely has a spot in the 22. To not be in the 27 selected is interesting.

Sorry, but who?

Our squad is very shallow on KPP depth. Our current backup rucks are Kalin Lane and Henry Smith. They’re like 1 and 2 years older.

It just says big boys, no comment on their age.

Kalin Lane and Henry Smith are both about 205 and 105kg are they not?

Sandy Brock is 198cm and 86kg

I'd say giving away 15-20kg is undersized.

It looks like Thompson played too.
Exciting to read! Hopefully Rory can make his way back into the firsts and give us a feel good story this year.

Also exciting to read about Brock playing well. We really need someone like Brock to overtake Caleb Graham because our key back stocks are pretty thin once we lose Collins or Ballard.

Did Budarick play?

Payne, Fullarton?
Not counting or VFL top ups, but our reserve KPP’s are;

Fullerton, KPF who’s soft aerially and doesn’t offer a physical contest, but is good around the ground.

Payne, KPD physical specimen still learning the game.

Lane, he’s a rookie ruck. Yes he’s big, but not sure if your man was playing ruck or KPD.

Smith, ruck forward, would have been a hard match up.

and if the reference was towards Payne and Fullarton, the same applies.

Payne 22yo 13 games 5th season 197mm/105kg
Fullarton 23yo 12 games 5th season 200/98

Brock 19yo 1st season no games and 198/86.....

Sounds like to me that the undersized/understrength 19yo had a good game against his older bigger opponents, no matter which 2 they were....

Great. Good on the Lions.

I think we’re happy to just acknowledge the report that he played well.

Whether it was against slightly older guys with some AFL experience or younger guys who are legitimately giants That’s good enough for me.
