Academy: Gold Coast SUNS Gun Factory

Does anyone know if we're likely to keep Wilson Blyth in our academy? His brother Angus currently plays union for the QLD Reds and we tried really hard to secure his services a few years ago but failed. Angus is 204cm so I imagine Wilson will probably end up around the same height and therefore it's definitely worth trying to keep him in our academy. Wilson also plays union for TSS in the GPS competition and that's why I think it could be difficult for us to keep him in our academy as he's probably leaning towards union as a career.

Anyone have any intel?

Watching Ace play in the GF last week and today, his speed and ability to get separation off the first few steps is unbelievable. Such a weapon even if just to start off an attacking chain from stoppages. Still needs work, but very promising.

Ace was getting praise from the commentators just before but I agree Budarick has shown more today. It would be nice to see Connor make it because he'd be the first Labrador/Helensvale High prospect to make it to the AFL since our academy has existed and it could really ignite footy prospects in the northern suburbs. His height is a bit concerning for a midfielder (175cm) so here's hoping he can grow to around the 180cm mark to increase his chances of competing with the bigger bodies in the AFL.

Your concern isn't unfounded because there are several clubs who would have the same reticence to fill an extra spot with a small forward, however, Richmond won a premiership with small mids and forwards. Melbourne and Essendon have way above the average number of smalls, while Brisbane and the Sydney teams clearly have a limit.

Budarick's 2 impediments to getting onto the Suns' list will be the number of guys with similar talents who are already on the list - Miller, Ainsworth, MacPherson etc - and his current team mate Hewago Paul Oea AKA Ace, who is listed as 170cm but I think he's bigger after watching him recently. Ashton Crossley isn't that much taller at 182cm, so we hope they all put an inch or 2 on.

Should any of these guys have a flat Draft year and go undrafted they can always remain in the Academy for their U19 year. With the new competition for the Academy team, these guys have a tremendous opportunity to use next year and, if necessary, the year after to push their Draft claims. The best thing for the Suns Academy to happen is for more of the players to receive bids earlier because of how cheap they are to match.

Personal issues revolving around the whole family moving back to Melbourne are apparently the cause.

Got an update on this turns out it was 2 weeks ago he had these personal issues trying to decide his future. So unlikely he will be at suns unless we take an early bid on him and north dont match.

But apparently fremantle are highly interested in him and would be prepared to go early on him despite the fact he doesnt want to go to perth.

Just a reminder that the AFLQ Schools Cup prelims + finals are taking place this Friday on the Sunshine Coast. Three teams from our academy zone are taking part and two are from the Gold Coast specifically. I can only assume quite a few of our academy players will be taking part in these games across all three of the schools in our zone. Also worth mentioning PBC are gunning for back-to-back-to-back AFLQ Schools Cups on Friday. Up the Beach!

It's another PBC v Helensvale Queensland Schools Cup grand final! I believe the two schools will be playing said grand final tonight. Should be a good contest with plenty of our academy boys playing for either school.

In other news, Gold Coast schools have faired very well at other divisions. It was a clean sweep for GC schools in the female grand finals with Miami claiming the senior female division, Helensvale claiming the junior female division and Varsity winning the primary female division. Helensvale also claimed the junior male division. Clearly we, as a city, are extremely strong in school footy.

Gold Coast schools dominant Tribal Sport AFL Queensland Schools Cup

The best AFL School talent in Queensland competed in The State Finals of the Tribal Sport AFL Queensland Schools Cup held today at Maroochydore Multisports Complex, Maroochydore.

Gold Coast schools were dominant in all six divisions, claiming every title across the Primary Male, Primary Female, Junior Male, Junior Female, Senior Male and Senior Female competitions.

Gold Coast SUNS Zone Manager Richie Lyons told aflq.com.au he was pleased by the success of the region’s schools at the carnival and had a lot of hope for football on the Gold Coast in the future.

“School football plays a really important part of Gold Coast footy allowing athletes from other sports the chance to play and is great to see schools who are relatively new to the sport be successful,” Lyons said.

“We are also really fortunate to have a number of excellence schools that link closely to the GC SUNS Academy which helps in player development, workload and coaching.”

Queensland’s premier state-wide interschool competition, the Tribal Sport AFLQSCup provides equitable pathways to participate for both boys and girls from Grades 4 through 12. Held across Friday and Sunday at the Maroochydore Multisports Complex, today’s State Finals were the culmination of 11,509 students competing across 578 teams, from 249 schools from Queensland and NSW Northern Rivers.

AFL Queensland CEO, Dean Warren, spoke of the importance of the AFLQ Schools Cup in developing future AFL and AFLW participation and talent development.

Warren said, “It is fantastic to see so many young boys and girls competing in the AFL Queensland Schools Cup State Finals today. It is clear to see the future of AFL in Queensland is in safe hands.”

“With schools competing from as far north as Cairns and as far south as the Gold Coast, the AFLQ Schools Cup is a vital way for us to develop young AFL participation and talent.”

“Congratulations to all those who competed over the weekend. In particular our newly crowned State Champions; Helensvale State High School, Gaven State School, Miami State High School, Park Ridge State High School, Varsity College and Palm Beach Currumbin State High School”

As part of the AFLSCup Finals, the inaugural Senior Male Inclusion AFLSCup State Championship was also held today. The Senior Male Inclusion Division is open to male students enrolled in Grades 10, 11 and 12 who have been identified as having a disability under the Education Adjustment Program (EAP).
