Lol.. When did Andrew leave North to play for Suns?

ANDREW SWALLOW
Specialist Skills Coach

Andrew Swallow joins younger brother David at the SUNS in a specialist coaching role for 2019, with an emphasis on stoppage craft and tackling.

Swallow was most recently a midfielder and former captain of the North Melbourne Football Club before he retired at the end of 2017. He spent 2018 playing for Aspley in the NEAFL and has shown an eagerness to help develop young talent, joining the club on a part-time basis, and occasionally playing for the Suns NEAFL team.

AFL likely to give Darwin zone to struggling Gold Coast

I must say I think this is a good idea. Brisbane were given access to NT players back in the early 90s and it allowed them to recruit exceptional players like Nathan Buckley and Darryl White. Giving us Darwin should really help in terms of the talent coming through our academy and it's probably equivalent to GWS being given the Riverina/Canberra zone which continues to produce AFL quality players every year. Plus there's no go-home factor if these players want to continue their AFL careers so that should help with retention too. Some of the players we could have recruited over the last few years if we had access to the NT zone include Nakia Cockatoo, Zac Bailey Brandon Parfitt, Willie Rioli and Daniel Rioli.

Hopefully the AFL makes this happen, even if it's only short term.

So the AFL are shutting down the NT Thunder and presumably creating a funnel which will see all the best NT product come through our academy system and play for our NEAFL team?

Sounds like it..

The move comes as the AFL Commission prepares to sign off on a rescue package aimed at reviving the beleaguered Gold Coast Suns.
The Suns are likely to be handed a new Darwin recruiting zone and could also play a game for premiership points at TIO Stadium.

Well big news today with the AFL assistance package. Suns getting Darwin as a academy zone.

I posted in another thread that the Suns should look to do a deal with the NT to tap into that market and players. Reported here in Darwin the Suns will play away games in Darwin in 2020, Dees get Alice.

NT Thunder have folded and now I can see a fair few young NT lads playing NEAFL for the Suns instead.

I also suggested a future re-branding to become the Northern Suns instead of just Gold Coast. With the NT feeding players in and the Suns needing a bigger market that sounds smart as well.

Darwin and the NT are very passionate about AFL, if the Suns get this right it would be a massive boost to the club on and off field.

So I guess we can welcome Conor Budarick and Malcolm Rosas Jr to the club now after today's announcement.

For those who may have been feeling sorry for themselves on Saturday watching Lynch, Prestia and Caddy pick up premiership medals, think about this. Maurice Rioli was a legendary player for Richmond in 80s (Norm Smith medalist, dual B&F winner, played over 100 games for the Tigers) but we now have exclusive access to juniors from Darwin and guess where Maurice Rioli Jr has grown up and played his junior footy... that's right. St Mary's Football Club in Darwin. We now have exclusive access to Maurice Rioli Jr in the 2020 draft!

Suck on that one, Richmond!!!

Sadly No we don’t

Please explain...

I thought I read we could draft any player from our academy and other clubs were not allowed to bid on them. Since Darwin is now a part of our academy zone wouldn't it stand to reason we get exclusive access to Maurice Rioli Jr next year?

Isn't he already in Essendon's academy?

I believe he will have to choose just like Bailey Scott.

He can go to Freo, Richmond or I guess the suns now or choose to go into the draft and anyone can take him

Do you know this or are you just basing it on the regular academy/father-son bidding rules?
